Big Light EP Release Party and Summer Tour with Surprise Me Mr. Davis
Big Light |
After a very cool Memorial Day experience at Desert Rocks Music Festival, Big Light is ready to bring it back home to San Francisco! On June 26 (this Thursday) the band will celebrate their record release party at 12 Galaxies where they will open up for Apollo Sunshine. This will be the first show of a six-month residency at 12 Galaxies. And as will be the case for all scheduled shows through the end of the year, ALO's Steve Adams will be playing bass as a member of the band.
Big Light will be celebrating the release of their self-titled, seven track EP which is slated for an early digital release on June 24 through reapandsow and will be available on iTunes, Rhapsody and all major digital distributors. Physical copies will be available at a discount price at the EP release party. The album was recorded this year at Coyote Hearing in Oakland. Apollo Sunshine drummer Jeremy Black produced and mixed the record. Check out some new tracks now at www.myspace.com/biglightband.
Big Light will also be at the High Sierra Music Festival performing sets on both Friday (7/4) and Sunday (7/6) at 10:30 a.m. on the Shady Grove stage. Yup, either set your alarm clock or play through because it will be Breakfast with Big Light!
Following High Sierra, Big Light will be linking up with their pals The Slip and Nathan Moore to head straight to Los Angeles for a run of shows up the California coast supporting Surprise Me Mr. Davis. After Spaceland in L.A. (7/8) they head to SOhO in Santa Barbara (7/9), then Moe's Ally in Santa Cruz (7/11) before returning to San Francisco for the final show of the tour at Cafe Du Nord (7/12).
A Bit More About Big Light:
Big Light came together in San Francisco during the middle of 2007. Three of the four musicians who make up the band (Fred Torphy - guitar/vox, Jamie Fordyce - guitar/bass/vox, and Bradly Bifulco - drums) had been playing in the bi-coastal cult outfit The White Thighs.
When Torphy booked a solo gig at San Francisco's Boom Boom Room in May of 2007, Fordyce and Bifulco joined him as his band, and this combination would serve as the core of Big Light.
On November 3, 2007, Torphy, Fordyce, Bifulco, and Colin Hoops (keys) made their live debut as Big Light, opening up for world-class singer-songwriter Nathan Moore (ThaMuseMeant, Surprise Me Mr. Davis) at Il Pirata in San Francisco. The following night, Moore opened up for Big Light at an encore performance at the Connecticut Yankee. At both performances Big Light collaborated with Moore on several obscure tunes from his 1000+ songbook. Big Light continues to play a few Nathan Moore songs at almost every show.
Big Light frontman Fred Torphy says that, when pressed up against a wall to describe the band's big rock sound, he'll often say "psychedelic." "We're experimental, but we also keep things tight, songwriting-wise," says Torphy. "Maybe that's where our love for Jeff Tweedy shines through." Quick to shoot down Wilco comparisons, Torphy says that Big Light is more directly influenced by the songwriting of Dire Straits, the arrangements of The Sea & Cake, and the sensibilities of Stephen Malkmus.
