STS9 Peaceblaster

RELEASE DATE SET FOR NEW ALBUM
SECOND SINGLE OUT NOW

"This band is making electronic music relevant again, and people from all over the musical map are taking notice." – Remix

Peaceblaster, the long awaited follow-up to Sound Tribe Sector 9's Artifact, hits stores July 8. It is a clarion call from a band that thrives on friction.

"America is this beautiful, incredible place, but it has a dark underbelly," bassist David Murphy says. "And even on Peaceblaster's most ethereal songs, there's a darkness that reflects what's going on in society - it ain't all bad, but it ain't all good."

"Music measures the temperature of the people," adds guitarist Hunter Brown. "Consumerism and the corporate media have taken us all down the path of cynicism, apathy, and nihilism. If the message on the new record is anything, it's to blast that shit."

Armed with a batch of song ideas and fueled by the tension of the times, the band (which in addition to Brown and Murphy, features percussionist Jeffree Lerner, keyboardist David Phipps and Zach Velmer on drums) took a break from their masochistic touring schedule and holed up in their recording studio, determined to make the strongest album of their career. "The last few records, it felt like we were learning on the job," says Murphy, "but the new record is the job."

"Beyond Right Now," the 2nd single from their forthcoming album is currently streaming free here, where you can also check out the first single, "Shock Doctrine."

Ultimately, STS9 knows that they are just a band, playing songs. No more, no less. But they also understand music's power as a cultural force. They know that friction can be a catalyst for change. And even though they can't literally blast peace into our consciousness, they can carve out a musical space where new ideas might take hold.

"We’re just trying to get inspired and to get people inspired," Brown says. "That's what music is: a never-ending conversation between strangers. We need this conversation to help us understand the world and our place in it."

I started as a Widespread fan 15 years ago, than to grateful dead. This past year I have enjoyed the disco biscuits electronica jam style and sts9's vibe as well. Why are we fighting. Blunts'n'Bisco I have seen a lot of your posts and they are always about this band sucking or that band sucks. Are the Disco Biscuits the only band you like? I like them too, but if we really want to talk musical talent, sts9 or Bisco cant hold the insturments of the guys from WSP or the remainder of the Dead. Not that I dont enjoy Bisco and Sts9. Give Peace a Chance. Lifes a peach dont be a leech.

turfspam, how many live acts have you seen? Have you been to China, and Europe, and Africa to look at all the acts in the world? What, you say no?? Well then why would you say STS9 is the best live act period, maybe they are one of the best, but to describe them as the best you would of needed to see every other act out there. Just enjoy the music and dont try and humanize and categorize your music, is it necesary to describe something as the best and the worst? Cant we just enjoy the music we all like. What are you going to do when you see John Mayer fans at Rothbury, if your going.

Loving the direction of STS9 right now. Had a blast at Summer Camp and their Waka set was unreal. These guys are surely at the top of their game bringing together the passion of their earlier years with the style of their new. I'm not sure if you are going to find a Baraka, From Now on, or Roy G on this album. But I am definitely diggen Metameme and EHM right now. Looking forward to STUM tour for sure this summer...for both bands.

I dont really have a Bisco, STS9 preference truly. Bisco's jams are good but the vocals ruin it and STS9 has the beats but meanders too much. Both can be entertaining in the right space, but to think either is the best live act out there is pretty laughable. On the STS9 album front, if "Beyond Right Now" is any indication of the rest of the album, save your money for a Festival they are playing and see them live or download a show.

I like how SOundtribe seems to be going deeper and deeper into that "painting a picture of the world around us through sound" vibe. That's what I've liked a lot about say Beck's last few albums, there's definately a gradual but very real transition taking place with the interweb, environmental unpredictability, etc. I'm no Nostradomous but like hey stuff does seem to get crazier and crazier collectively speaking. Siked to hear the rest of this album. Saw em' at Summercamp and I agree with SCIFreak they threw down.

This is going to be a great album. ARTiFACT is one of my favorite albums ever, and the fact that the band states that all of their previous albums have been leading up to peaceblaster, well it's going to be great. I agree with tufspam, I believe that S9 do put on the best show, but that is my opinion. If anybody has a problem with that then go eat some rusty nails. I'm just baffled when people say they don't dig Umphrey's. I have never seen such a technical, creative group of musicians making jaw-dropping music like they do anywhere, ever. I have seen all of the bands mentioned in the above posts, and UM just blows them away, seriously. It's a whole different league. UM plays with the big boys. They're super-tight and super-psychedelic at the same time (WAY tighter than the Dead, and more so than Phish, at least in general). You can tell they practice, and I like seeing that kind of dedication. They are the first truly original "jam band" in quite some time, and they kick serious kinds of ass, not the watered-down, only-occasionally-inspired kind of ass that some of these other bands kiss. Wake up.

UM is so hit or miss and they have been for the last couple years that I have stopped traveling to see them cause the last few times it has been a waste of money, I could have my ears pissed in from the comfort of my house. UM til like 05 was good stuff but out of the last 10 shows Iv seen of theirs since only 1 has been good and another one was decent. Don't give me your' technical bullshit man that shit is lame because their style of music shows off that aspect. And you to say they are tighter than Phish was in their day just makes you look like a fucking fool........

I think they should have a giant cagefight with Umphrey's, Bisco, and STS9. They should arm all band members with their respective instruments and let them neat the living shit out of each other. All band members should be required to ingest large quantities of crystal meth and molly. They can beat the crap out of each other while giving each other hugs and back rubs.

people need to stop hating on music and just enjoy whats out there. it doesn't matter what you listen to, who is better than who, or any of that crap. every band mentioned on the board is talented and has huge followings. why must one of them suck or be the worst band? that is one person's opinion. quit hating on each other and just listen to what you want to listen to. i personally love every band mentioned. that is my opinion. umphrey's is sick as hell. ive seen them 60+ times and it never gets old for me. none of my friends even like that band and i have to listen to them tell me every day how much they suck, but you know what, i never let it change how i feel or get on my nerves. keep the love...see you all at rothbury for a sick weekend of jams and vibes.

"This is the Job?". . . I don't know about that. Their chord progressions are just so predictable. They rarely jam in and out of songs or change keys during a song or jam. I don't think I've ever heard them jam any chord progression that's not extremely generic. Anybody who tries to claim that tribe fans aren't all drugged out and that the biscuit scene is more drugged out and less musical is retarded. Biscuits jams actually change keys sometimes and travel places. Tribe jams are usually just wank over the same progressions every night. And tribe fans are just as drugged out as biscuit kidz.

I must be some kind of an oddity. I listen to Bisco sober all the time, as well as when i'm not. I have no problem with STS9, or Umphrey's either, in fact i listen to all three of those bands a lot. The point that people are missing when they bash one of these bands is that they don't like the music that is being created, that does not mean in anyway that one of those bands sucks, understand that the Backstreet Boys were horrible musicians, and their music sucked. Umphrey's is the tightest band going around right now, and i think that's why no one gives them credit because they write out so much of what they're going to do at any given point, but their musicianship is awsome. Bisco has to be given credit for being a real jam band in the mold of the Dead and Phish, as in they let the music develop and become its own entity (this is my opinion). STS9 is great, but i think that what they do is they take the electronic sound of Bisco, and they set it in the tightly controlled space of umphrey's.

P.S. i don't understand why someone is dumb for saying that the dead weren't always tight, they weren't, Jerry as great as he was had some atrocious shows where he was too messed up on heroin, and phil was too drunk, and Bobby was too busy looking for some women to get with after the show, they were great but i don't think of the dead as a model of organization and tight structure

I dig all three of the bands that are curently being beaten back and forth all over this thread. Personaly i like UM, Bisco, STS9 in that order. While UM is not only more musicly talented than the other two bands, they can play most anything. Their music covers sooooo many differnt styles and genres it's truely mind boggling. Thier songs are unique and well composed, thier jams are tight and always exciting and thier covers are played note for note to the originals. Personaly i do find UM to be the best toring band right now. I do love the electronica jams of Bisco and STS9 as well, and i must say the energy at their shows is unmatched, but it can get a little redundant and boring after sometime. I know the idea of electranica is the repeditivness but 3 hours of untz, untz, untz gets a little much after a while and some of the fans can get a little pushy. UM for me all the way, but i'd see the other two anyday as well.

OrganicRhythm Sun 6/22/2008 04:58PM

I just remembered why I don't post on here. But I need to respond, I guess: UM is the furthest thing from boring I have ever listened to. They go from heavy metal to ambient avant-garde in a matter of several minutes. Selo34 hit the nail on the head as far as the Dead goes, and although Phish blew me away almost every time I saw them, a couple of shows demonstrated either a lack of rehearsal or an excess of substance abuse (real meandering jams). UM has never come across like that. Phreak89, you seem to understand where I'm coming from. Cheers.

First of all Sound Tribe is the shit! They always bring it live; they get the whole place bouncing. Also, you can't compare their sound to the likes of Bisco, UM, Phish, the Dead, WSP, etc. Each one of these bands brings something unique and special to the mix; all different sounds in my opinion; who's better, who's worse...who cares? Just enjoy the music...that is the beauty; you can have a connection to so many different sounds; I love music.

Really, guys? Really?

My band is better than yours?

Really?

Most of you need to get over yourselves.

I personally love all of these bands. None of them steal anything from the other, so that argument needs to go down the drain.

"How can somebody like bisco more than tribe?" I don't know, because they do. Next question.

These arguments have become quite non-sensical and trite. Nobody gives any real reason as to why one band is better than the others. I love the Biscuits, they are my favorite band. But I'd be a liar to say I don't love Tribe and Umphrey's either. I think they are all so different and put on drastically different shows that an argument of who is better becomes nothing but redundant.

I thought Tribe's best music was during their earlier years but lately it has become too geneic, hip hoppy beats with maybe one peak during the whole show. They used to improv a lot more. The last four or five shows i went to have been that lo swagga type shit. I personally like the biscuits and UM more than sts9 but that is not to say that one is necessarily better than the other. I think tribe has an excellent ability to make music as a whole group but none of the musicians individally (except Velmer) can hold a candle to the members of tDB or UM. Plus tDB and UM's shows are always different. To say tDB's music is only untz, untz means that you don't listen to them because they have some beautiful compositions that don't involve electronica. I do like sts9's studio stuff more than tDB's and UM's so i am pretty excited to hear this new album.

Pottad you are a fool if you think that Murphy and phipps can't hold a candel to stasik, joel, magner and brownie..... that is just laughable man, your opinion is just wrong!

Where is this like Valhallan mountain of superiority with different teirs for bands that a lot of these folks seem to think exists. The whole spirit of jamband music and hippie culture, etc. is to overcome the basal, animalistic competativeness that the world's been consumed by and appreciate sharing space and life with one another. I mean, people have made fun of that whole idea as being overly idealistic and its true if you think eating 5 hits of acid and dancing to a soundtribe show is making the world a better place in any major way, but it's the spirit of the thing and all this cross-talk is ridiculous, it's like hanging out at a cubs-sox game, it's ridiculous.

Excess- "How can somebody like Disco more than Tribe? I don't know, because they do. Next question." Funny shit dude, well said.

Why would you say a band or artist is shitty when they are touring the country playing in front of thousands of people. They must be good at something and they are probably doing better than any annoying bisco fan.

Rothbury will be my 11th tribe show. This is where the scene is at. For those of you who can't grasp this then stay the fuck away.

all I can add is, the last time I saw Bisco, there were under 100 people in attendance (Granada Theatre, Lawrence, KS). Last time I saw Umph, there was half of the attendance of the previous years show at the same venue (Liberty Hall, Lawrence, KS). Last time I saw STS9 at either of those theatres, place was packed so tight you were breathing vapor from the sweat of the person in front of you (sort of gross to think about actually), but Tribe put on a hell of a show every time.

Not to mention it was packed for Waka this year and that set was on fire, and 100% different from their Summercamp set (Flaming Lips did the same set at both shows. Lips DO SUCK)

I like Umph, Sts9 and bisco. all for different reasons.

I think Umph has the best musicians, bisco can't sing, sts9 can be too orchestrated, they seem to not jam anymore :(

I still like all these bands anyway. Haha!! I like more bands than you!

It is foolish all the comments you see on here but, to Tweak as far as Bisco ripping off STS9 beats, I love the 9, but I am pretty sure bisco has been around longer. Bisco may not have the best vocals, but some of their jams are f#%#ing great, mulberry dreams, Jamelia, helicopters etc.. STS9 has great live sound, and they are pushing the limits of where music is at today, more so than many other bands (rhythmically, melodically, and yes even harmonically, you can debate their use of chord changes but the style and rhythm in which they are using them is in inself unique, and if you know so much about music, find me a harmonic pattern anyone is using which is truly unique, I'll give you $100 when you do!). I totaly respect UM but have yet to truly love a show, maybe it is because I keep seeing them with Galactic and Les as openers, would much prefer a cobill. Anyway, way to go STS9, I think they are doing better with their studio recordings than many bands on "the scene", and I look forward to the new addition, and Red Rocks, it's gonna be a party fo sho!

A couple of things I want to say:

First of all, I've seen tribe about 25 times (I've lost count), grew up in Atlanta / Athens with them and know what they're all about from their earlier music to now. Having said that, I totally agree with pottad in that their earlier music was better. They peaked around the 2005-06 tabernacle new years shows (not their popularity, but their shows). They are now becoming ever more and more popular. Since then it was a little bit downhill in my opinion - the "lo swaga shit" pottad is mentioning was really coming into play and though that stuff was cool, when it pushed the earlier stuff totally out of some shows that I saw I was pretty disappointed (I noticed they tended to play more "dumbed down" shows like this to newer audiences / shittier music scenes like in Boston). People were raving about the AllGood 2007 and that was absolutely the worst one I had ever seen out of the 20 something then times I had seen them.

Drugs are absolutely a part of our culture and not always a detrimental one. I use them plenty at shows, tribe included. But the fact is if you eat enough rolls and molly before a tribe show only having seen them a couple of times or not at all, you're going to enjoy the show and think it's awesome no matter what. To really judge a bands shows you have to have listened to the whole spectrum of their material both sober and otherwise. AllGood 2007 was not a better show.

Having said all that, since then, they have been on the move again. I almost considered not seeing them at new years because I was so disappointed with the All Good show but they blew me away new years and had incorporated alot more of their older sound in again with their new. Good stuff. I haven't listened to anything on this album yet, but I am hoping with their recent change in direction the songs will be good live (who listens to albums much for bands like tribe anyway?). My only worry is that sometimes when bands try to get all "political" with an album and their music the music itself goes down the tube.

Selo, I really like your analysis of tribe, UM, and biscuits. I think it's spot on.

And I normally don't hate, but tranceful_elite, I doubt you are a musician or know much about music, because in terms of musicianship murph and hunter don't really hold a candle to anyone. Same with the bass in the biscuits. And that's coming from a straight tribe head. The "talent" in tribe is with lerner, zach, and phipps (phipps is so underrated) but really tribe is about the composition as selo said not about ripping solos so its irrelevent anyway.

Oh and one other thing I wanted to say:

It's laughable that the Dead and Phish are even in this dialogue. They are on a COMPLETELY different level than these musicians and this music. Even umph - it's not all about tightness all the time.

I love WSP - but saying sts9 could hold WSP's instruments is straight wrong. I'd like to see Todd Nance come close to the technical ability of Zach Velmer. Anyway - I'm way pumped for this summer tour - sts9 and umphreys are a dynomite combo.

So, the leaked peaceblaster is just not for me. I'll give the release a chance. But from what i've heard its just too slow, and there never seem to break it down. From like 99' to like late 03' every tribe show was the best I had ever seen. Now it just doesn't do it for me, I pretty much just stand there, tryin my damndist to shake my ass. I've been catchin more bisco lately, but it doesn't fill the void. Bring back the old breaks, peace.

the thing that confuses me about sts9 is that they talk like gangster rappers from California but I have heard they are from Georgia. "y'all" makes sence there but not here. -pissed off Californian.
