PHISH: WALNUT CREEK; ALL NEW 2-DVD SET

Phish
Phish is set to release Walnut Creek, a brand new 2-DVD set, in stores August 5, and available for pre-order now at Phish Dry Goods.

On July 22, 1997, Phish performed the second show of their U.S. summer tour at Walnut Creek Amphitheatre in Raleigh, NC through a torrent of rain, thunder and lightning. Rather than cancel the gig, the band played on with the music mirroring the peaks of the storm's intensity. Highlights include "Down With Disease" that slowly segues into "Mike's Song" - the first and only time these two classic tunes were ever paired together in such a way - as well as "Taste," complete with near Biblical thunder and lightning display.

Overall the show is remembered as a significant example of Phish's hallmark approach to group improvisation with the performances here characterized by an exceptionally democratic and refined balance of four musical voices. This 2-DVD set features more than 2 1/2 hours of 5-camera footage with 5.1 Dolby Surround or optional stereo sound.

Anyone who pre-orders the DVD from Dry Goods will receive Phish: Left Nuts, a bonus CD featuring more than 75 minutes of previously unreleased music from Phish's past performances at Walnut Creek, produced specifically for this release.

In addition, you can pre-order (available for download on August 5) MP3 and Flac versions of Walnut Creek's audio at LivePhish.com and get an exclusive bonus track of "You Enjoy Myself" with special guest Boyd Tinsley from 6/16/95 Walnut Creek Amphitheatre, Raleigh, NC.

Is the 'Left Nuts' bonus CD a reference to Trey's infamous quote in Rolling Stone a few weeks back? It must be..

Yeah, i remember this show, intense rain storm and sick Mike's>Simple, etc. I have to agree though about that va. beach show. Not only was it (i think?) the american debut of Ghost, Piper, and Dogs Stole, maybe one or two more, but that '97 summer tour was when phish really started taking jams to a whole other level, playing three or four song second sets, etc. It seems like that whole tour was a major turning point toward "new school" phish. Some people got turned off from that point on by the ambient jamming aspect, but '97 and '98 IMHO best years ever.

98 rules in my opinion. As much as I love the chaotic shredding of Trey in 93-95, 98 is really the year Trey was on fire, the melodies that came out of his guitars were incredible ( Once again check out Starplex 98's reba jam, it's epic, really sounds like every single notes were meant to be, no other reba from the same year tears it like that.) Then came 2003-04 (04 being the worst) Trey really sucked then, his distortion was way to loud and he would barely play single notes and mostly nasty chord progressions.. I have a feeling though that now that he is sober things are going to be different, we might see some 98 style trey again.

PS: isn't 98 the year when they would stop listening to their shows and stop analysing them? Well they should have gone back to that in 03-04

this is awesome! 7-22-97's second set is EPIC....

my only concern is that 7-23-97 will never be released now? I have to disagree about 7-21-97 being the best "ghost" ever. 7-23-97 is THE BEST "GHOST" EVER!!! hands down. I'm happy about the new DVD....but please don't let 7-23-97 not see the light of day...at least release it as a soundboard!

they could literally release a dvd/sbd of every show from this tour! I hope to see more dvd/sbd releases from this tour in the future!(7-23-97)

While we're on the topics of best ever...how has no one mentioned this Taste yet??? The lightning lightning that struck nearby must have passed through the electrical equipment, casuse that Taste is SMOKING!! I've heard it a million times on cassette and can't wait to see it on the DVD.

What does anyone think about a 10 year reunion at Big Cypress??? Perfect for a first show back! Gives everyone an oppurtunity to attend...and we all get to hang out with alligators again!

Nolan have you got ther Clifford Ball Special that MTV of all people produced, I'm watching it right now, pretty sweet memories and great crowd shots. I just got a whole box of boot dvd's last night. My boy that I hooked up with his first Phish tix dropped them off yesterday, some ILL SHOWS, all the Halloweens, Hampton 98, NYE 95, MANY 96-98 shows. If anyone has a video copy of 99 Deercreek with the Whipping Post I'd sure like to have it. OR ANY SHOWS from Fall 94' especially Bloomington, IN my first show. Would be willing to trade DVD's, we got some OLD ones too , lots of suff at the Front going back to 1987.

i was at this show and it rocked. this was one of the three times i've seen phish in raleigh. i remember it started raining as soon as runaway jim came on. one of my buddies went straight to the wall and jumped over and two of us followed. we climbed over about 20 rows of seats to have security come over to us, thinking we were caught, and took a buddy of mines cigarette and said, "no, smoking" and walked away. i remember the exposion from the lightning during taste to make it all the more intense, to add to the hit i dropped earlier that night. then we ran into people from high school in new york. great show. looking forward to this.

This second set is one of the best sets of music I have ever heard. The segue from DWD -> Mike's is absolutely spectacular, definitely one of the best Phish segues ever. Get this show, you won't regret it.

panic and phish are apples and tomatoes. jerry joseph made a great comment about the phish in The Earth Will Swallow You. Panic is a good at taking jams to the dark side a la The grateful dead. Phish could get dark but it was a less serious goosebumps type of dark. like ooh this is scary. fun. This looks great though. and replacing s's with z's is BAD AZZ.

I agree that the 7/23 Ghost is the best Ghost ever. Of course I am biased having been there.

Also agree big time that every show from this tour could arguably deserve to be released! 1997 rocked, and 98 used the momentum to keep it going almost the whole year, but IMO the end of 98 was the start of a decline, and possibly the start of Trey's bad habits.

Long live 97 summer and fall tours!!!
