Trey Anastasio's Drug Court Graduation

Legendary Phish frontman Trey Anastasio graduated from Washington County Drug Court Wednesday. During the graduation, Anastasio expressed his thanks to court officials and his family stating: "I thought even the night I got arrested that my life is finally being saved..."

I know what its like to go through the whole rehabilitation process and it is harder than people think. Anyone who still talks shit about Trey and his problems in the past is ignorant. We need to support him as much as we can because he needs us and I really hope he gets as much positive feedback on this thread as possible. I think trey is going to sit in with gordo at rothbury not Phil.

It seems Trey spoke those words from the heart. I hope he internalizes those unfortunate experiences and uses them to propel his life back into greatness with music, family, and his love for the scene. A clean Trey makes this world a better place. Can't wait for the rebirth of Phish...its going to be a beautiful day for all of us.

i can totally relate to that. a couple years ago my life was so out of control i felt actual relief when i woke up and found myself in jail knowing i was going to have to do some time. i didn't feel as if i was arrested, i felt more like i was rescued. i was, and still am, deeply grateful for the palm beach county police dept. for saving my life. i'm really happy for trey. he looks great and he has a really positive attitude about all this. now the hard part, and i know this from first hand experience, is keeping it up day after day. good luck trey!!

I hope this experience allows us to have trey around for many years. Think of all the amazing music we missed out on by certain musicians dying young etc...... It can't be easy when you are surrounded by yes men and many of your freinds are also your employees. Thats why it sometimes takes the law to force stars and celebs into rethinking the manner in which they live their lives. and yes..... lets hope its not even a question and that the languedoc is on the stage even before phil his gang and trey come out for the whole show.............

I've been clean and sober for 20 years now ( Wharf Rat). Saw more Dead shows sober than messed up, and liked them better when clean. Phish, Cheese, Panic all were discovered and enjoyed during sobriety. When the jam hits the brain stem, it is better than drugs. My own personal body chemistry does not jive well with substances, and my family has a long history. Life is better on the other side of addiction. Music, love, life- thats what matters.

i agree Josh....Gram Parsons, Jim Morrison, Kurt Cobain, Jerry Garcia, Jimi Hendrix....the list goes on and on. Trey could have easily fell victim to the horrors of serious drug abuse but he was spared and now we hopefully have many many years to enjoy listening and seeing him do what he was born to do....

If things had been different in 1995, there'd be archive video of Jerry giving a similiar speech ... but it wasn't to be. It's 13 years later and maybe none of us know how close we came to losing another one. Now's not the time to be asking anything of Trey except be happy and heathy - if we truly love him, then we'll be happy with the results, no matter what.

Seriously, mkane? Do you honestly believe that if addicts had the choice between being hooked on drugs or having their free will and a clean system to boot, they would choose the former? Don't condemn someone for being human. Especially, don't fancy yourself as fit to summarize someone's reasoning if you haven't walked in their shoes. You may try applauding the man at his attempt at redemption. Good for you, Trey!

As we all know this scene breeds drug problems and i myself found that the more drugs i had done took me away from that special music place that i craved much more than dope. So now being of the train gives me a sound mind and the ears back that take me to another level not another night not remembered. I've had two friends die one off tour and one at a phish show on his damn b-day nonetheless! I never forget and i praise the good lord that music and me are still madly in love with eachother! I went from cursing gate crashers in '95 dead tour to being one myself at alpine valley 2004 phish my last show was terrible i was arrested and listening to phish play "access me" for the first time! as the opener and i was in handcuffs miserable and all my phriends were inside accessing teh real deal! down with dope up with love and hugz real kids care and share that love!!1 B.S.S.

Want some even better news? Steve Lilywhite (Billy Breathes) is going to produce Phish's next album, supposedly already has a deal worked out. yo bobbyshortcut I feel you man, I know people who's lives were destroyed in the "wake of the phish" as I called it. That Alpine Run brought the worst out in all of us, a good friend hooked us up with tickets he got thru Phish but we all did some shady shit to stay on tour that lat year. It used to be easy to tour, cheap tix, able to vend, sleep at reststops. Our country no longer is free the way it was in 95-96.

Hey Bobby your lucky the NAZI COPS AT ALPINE did'nt just kick your ass Rodney King style, they bout arrested us for "not following instructions" on the way in. That place is so wack it's unreal. I guess the Dead fuckd it up for everyone when they used it for their reunion and like 100K people showed up. We all should keep in mind too that ANYBODY in Tre's position is gonna get up there and say what he said. I guess when you stand at IT and hear Tre talk about Phish playing for the next 15 years, you get a litle skeptical about what he says being truthful.

mkane, Jerry was on his way to recovery when he died; but the beating his body took throughout the years made it hard. I remember watching an interview with his wife at the time, and he said he was in the middle of writing a book and was happier than ever while in rehab. Yes, if he would have quite in the late '70's, maybe he would still be alive, but you must know the whole story before making such a comment. And for Trey, he's overcoming an addiction that is extremely difficult for many. He looks happy and sober. Good for him. Keep it up Trey, like it was stated above, one day at a time.

Born in '66, saw the Dead 86 times and watched with a broken heart as Jerry faded away and eventually with little surprise passed away. Started seeing Phish in '92 and eventually saw 66 shows and I am grateful (sic) for every one of them. I think we all thought that since Phish was ascending while the Dead were declining that these types of bands that can produce something that I have no word for other than 'magic' might be commonplace. Then Trey and Jerry had their own bands that are criminally overlooked for what fabulous and miraculous bands that they often had. What am I getting to? Well, we have been very, very lucky human beings to live in a time where we can witness this sort of magic and wondrous sorcery of music, technology and spirit. Trey is contemporary of mine (in age, not talent I'm afraid. he-he) and I have related profoundly to his decisions and his life's curves and bends. As a writer wrote earlier here, we're just unbelievably lucky to have him and to have had him. I met my best friends, my wife (a beautiful Japanese I met in Japan in 2000 in Osaka) and now we have created a gorgeous daughter. All of it literally inspired by these men and their lives. My wife and I marvel at how these scenes brought us together and continue to influence our lives. Please, let's be real. These guys (Trey, you da man!) have changed and influenced our lives. I am now a psychologist and treat many types of drug addiction and other emotional problems. Trey's video brought me to tears because it reminded me of my own life's difficulties with being associated with this scene and the transcendence that can occur if you keep your eyes on your inspirations and leave the substances behind. Kudos to you and your family, Trey. See ya on down the road. Where we ain't gonna be feelin' bad.

Randyleepublic, unfortunately many knew that Jerry had sleep apnea. This was openly discussed in the sleep medicine community in the early 1990's in the Bay Area and likely long before my arrival as a sleep specialist there (we are everywhere, man). Any doctor would recognize he apnea a mile away. Of course, Phil knew. As you know from the symptoms (one of them is actually called "heroic" snoring due to its volume) it be hard as heck to be an educated man on tour with the guy for 30 years and not know it. Trouble with my ole pal Jer (if I may) is nobody could ever save him, but himself. Add a three-pack a day cigarette habit and a 20+ year junk habit and being at some points probably 2 to 3 times his recommended body mass and there ya have it. As for Trey, I seriously doubt it after seeing almost 7,000 patients over the last 22 years. He evidently has no retrognathia (that's why Jerry always had a beard; he had no chin!), is not obese by any measure, and is his early 40's where his risk is statistically just starting to bump up. No sense inflaming a thread that has clearly been very positive, hopeful and remarkably (thus wisely) cautious about Trey. No, this is all good. At this point in time. Sweet dreams to you and him. Wear your CPAP! he-he. We really ARE everywhere, man.

Nice trey, glad and relieved to hear him say those things. But can we not turn this board into a debate over the virtues/pitfalls of drugs, or who's got the most intense recovery story, and just be happy for trey. As a person who has been able to enjoy drugs in moderation, there is nothing more annoying and pretentious than 12-steppers. If it works for you, I'm all for it, but I don't need to be preached to. Also, enough with the Jerry parralells.

The guy that wrote "How many 80 year olds are there with serious diabetes? Put your self righteous bullshit away!", i agree with you on a certain level, but jerry was 53 when he died, bud.

To all those people tired of being "preached to" out there, just remember that there are lots of people at shows right by you who don't get loaded and put up with obnoxious drunks and otherwise wasted inconsiderate people without preaching or causing static. I have been to more shows clean than I have loaded now and I have no desire to convert anyone. Have your fun and have a good time but don't step on my toes and spill your beer on me and act like I am the jerk. If you have a problem, there's help out there, you can change, and you don't have to stop going to shows. If you don't have a problem, I am not even adddressing you, so don't accuse me of "preaching."

I guess it hasn't really registered to me until recently that law enforcement is really there to be our saviors, and God/Jesus must have been a cop, a drug consuelor, or corrections officer b/c they sure do like hangin around the jails and drug courts to "save everyone" dont they?

Good for him. The only negative I can see is all the people who got wrapped up in the scene who have really messed up their lives up on drugs. I always hoped that Phish would speak up more about the dangers of heavier drugs and try to clean up the scene. I guess it makes sense that they didn't considering that they were messed up themselves. I stopped going to Phish shows in 97 because of the increase of heavy drugs and I now know that my instincts were right. Let's hope they take a little more responsibility for the scene if they ever come back. Until then, I wish Trey all the best and much genuine happiness.

So did his final exam contain any questions about the wooks that followed him? Only Phish would generate a little press with a drug court graduation story.

This is what we have been waiting for??

7.6.08 Rothbury

Back on the Train > Brian and Robert, Water in the Sky, Driver, The Inlaw Josie Wales, Farmhouse, Let Me Lie, Sample in a Jar, Mist, Sleep Again, Wading in the Velvet Sea, Waste, Backwards Down the Number Line*#, Alaska*#, Chalkdust Torture*

Trey, are you kidding us? This is what you play on your big return to the stage? These are your worst boring sappiest songs (except Chalkdust). What happenned to wanting to play YEM? I repeat myself, What a f*cking shame you have become.
