After a short two-week vacation, Philadelphia’s Brothers Past return to the stage this weekend, playing four shows in three different states, all in just over 48 hours. The band’s unique blend of effects-oriented improvisation is quickly gaining a large fanbase on the east coast, and this weekend, they’re back at it again, playing shows in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and New York City.
"I think we were all looking for a little time away when we went on our break," keyboardist Tom McKee said. "Just like we’re all looking to get back into the swing of things now. Being away from something, even if it’s only for a short time, makes you want something that much more."
The three-night run kicks off Thursday night at Rex’s in West Chester, Pennsylvania, where the brothers continue their weekly residency at one of the best-kept secrets in the Philadelphia area. Every Thursday, Rex’s hosts two sets of all-out, effect-pedal to the metal improvisation, for the bargain price of $4. On Friday, the band will set out to demonstrate exactly what it takes to be Gonzo in New York, roaring into the Lion’s Den in New York City for a
late-night midnight set. Brothers Past will be sharing the bill with
Homunculus.
Saturday afternoon, the band will be kicking off the So Many Roads show at the Tweeter Center in Camden, New Jersey, opening for Ratdog. It will be the biggest venue the band has ever performed in. Saturday night, the band returns home to headline at The Khyber in Philadelphia, where they’ll play one long set, post Ratdog. Tickets for the show are $7, but discounted tickets are available with a flier.
In addition to their upcoming live performances, Brothers Past are currently mixing their first live CD, entitled Elements. The album, recorded on May 5 at Indre Studios in Philadelphia, will be available in the early fall. "We’re having a lot of fun with it," McKee said. "It’s taking a little longer than we expected, but that’s because of the process involved. It won’t sound like a live record when it’s done. We’re doing a lot of post-production work. Not necessarily over-dubbing, but more along the lines of sound exploration and tone-altering. It’s starting to get really interesting."
Brothers Past will also be appearing at Bisco Knights on Saturday, August 25 at the Kahuna Summer Stage in Wilmington, Deleware.
