Keyboardist Butch Taylor Leaves Dave Matthews Band

DMB
A brief message on dmband.com states that, "Keyboardist Butch Taylor has decided to leave Dave Matthews Band. We are saddened by this sudden news but he has our full support. He's given so much to us and our audience through the years and he will be missed."

Having played live with DMB since 2001 and appearing as early as 1998 on the band's album Before These Crowded Streets, the sudden departure comes as a shock. No details are currently available.

The Dave Matthews Band's next show is on May 30 at Post Gazette Pavilion in Burgettstown, PA. Complete tour dates available here...

I wonder who will fill the void. It always sucks when a band member Whleaves. For Dave fans, at least it wasn't Carter!! What a dog.

I know a lot of people on Jambase are not big DMB fans (or even like them at all). I, for one, do. But even I am not broken up over this. I am interested to see how the band's sound changes without Butch around. Hopefully, this will give Tim Reynolds some more room to rock out this summer.

Couldn't agree more...if Carter ever leaves they're screwed. Maybe if Boyd would leave they could get out of the rut they've been in for the last 10+ years.

I am very happy about this, he has BUTCHered there tunes for a long time now.

No Butch but with Tim might make this a decent tour for once.

Whatever guys, Butch is nice on the Keys and as a huge DMB fan I'm sorry that he's gone, but, you know his band can pull in somebody that can really wail on the keyborads. So I am excited to see who they add for the tour. Can't wait for Rothbury and Hersey Park with the Crowes.

Even though I am kinda surprised to see this, all I can think is that I'm glad it wasn't someone else. Don't get me wrong...Butch left his mark on the band. But I would have been a lot more upset to hear that Rashawn or Carter were on their way out. As Muffinman said, I'm looking forward to the replacement. Good luck in the future Butch

I'll bet the new keyboardist will be a guy named Ray Paczkowski (I had to do some research to find this name, I'm not that cool). He was in Dave and Friends, and I've also seen him play with Trey. He is very good, and can do some real jammin'.

meh...I'm sure that DMB will be OK. It's not like the majority of his fans even knew this guys name. I always thought the main attraction was listening to Dave's strained whiney vocals and the ocasional horn toot or fiddle solo.

Some one in that band finally has had a epiphany! A band that sells 50$ lawn tickets should not exist! now the band should finally disintegrate and stop polluting the jam band scene!

Muffinman...sounds like a solid point about Paczkowski...maybe this will make keys a bigger part of the songs...

to all those ripping on the band, it is your opinion and im not here to bash someone's musical taste. but just take into consideration that carter beauford is one of the top drummers alive and many jambands touring today have opened for that group...the same band who used to open for phish

the only time i ever saw DMB was at riverbend music center in cincinnati ohio...

the retarded pre-frat-kid-wannabe's were in full effect.

i was on the lawn (only reason i went was cuz my sister won tickets and then she gave them to me) and i couldn't hear a LICK of fucking music because all these drunk douchbags were ALL TALKING ON THEIR CELLPHONES.

nobody gave a fuck about the show, and it ruined my entire experience.

i might watch them at rothbury if there's nothing else to do.

I am not the biggest DMB fan but I always take my wife to see one show a year and we always have a very good time. They are great musicians and I'm sure the keyboard player will be missed to some musical extent. I know that my favorite studio album from the DMB has been Before These Crowded Streets and Butch played a big role on that album so...

I'm looking forward to the Alpine Valley show with the Black Crowes. The comments about the kids on cell phones is spot on though....man does that get annoying. I think we moved about ten times last summer at Alpine Valley due to people talking to much.

Butch was a big contributor to the touring entity of the Dave Matthews Band. He is a fantastic musician, and a very generous individual. I've known him personally now for a few years, and he's always taken care of my tickets. It's an unfortunate situation, and I wish him the best.

ive been cruising these posts for 6 - 8 months now. i comment often on the forums. sndtribefreak... if it isnt STS9 then everyone else sucks. i guarentee that the UM/STS9 tour will be UM based (even though double headlined.) it is for me, and most people i know. and do i owe you any money? no. so why do you care how i spend mine. I love STS9, and when they sell out stadiums ill be the first to tell ya i was wrong. Poisining music? muscianship is obviously more than you think. You must have a boring life to have to comment on bands you dont like. isnt it lunch time? go on to the high school cafeteria.

Wow...I've seen DMB/D&T/D&F conbined 93 times and i do get what your going at in regards to slight setlist "regulars". And yeah, maybe DMB is the McDonald's of Jam Bands...but I think they get a bad wrap because they've been around for a while doing basically, the same genre...

When they first came out, they were unique...that made them appealing to a jam crowd...15 years later, violins, horns, and acoustic guitars are overpopulated in music and thus the average jam band crowd leans towards the slightly unique and obscure structures and tones of an STS9, Umphrey's, etc.

However, you cannot take away from the fact that every member of DMB is in the current top 5 industry wide at their respective instruments...Dave's rythm playing is bar none, carter is obviously rediculous, stephan plays bass with carter and that speaks for itself, Roi plays 17 different horns all exceptionally...i mean c'mon...

So basically, don't hate on them because their uniqueness caught on and thus was no longer unique...

Lastly...in regards to the stupid frat fans...my advice is to spend the xtra 10 bucks and get a pavilion seat...you'll find that the closer you get to the stage, the cooler the people...

Oh yeah, and if you like DMB and Other Jambands, my band is playing with the Disco Biscuits next week in Hartford...check out

www.FrankVieleMusic.com and let me know what you think

FYI...if you absolutely Hate DMB you might not like my stuff!!!

Butch wasn't official. Think they'll be fine without him. Sure Warehouse won't be the same without him, and they won't play Linus & Lucy, but that song was far and few inbetween anyway. I'm not upset to see him go, although, I appreciated what he added. I agree with dancingaprial

Majority of DMB fans = asshole frat boys or drunk high school girls

that being said, the fan base may be a bit wack but if you can get past that the band will never disappoint you. Also, from what I remember from seeing them the last 3 summers, Butch Taylor was nasty and definately helped elevate some of their jams.

I agree that the shows have been stagnant in recent years. (Not sure that 10 years is correct...but nonethelsess) But I can say...I play in a DMB Tribute band called Crowded Streets and have not been a huge fan since day 1 myself. I appreciate the music they play...but think the older stuff is wheree its at. Butch will be missed...

Just gettin' what we deserve. Last year all I heard was whining about Butch. No consider how many songs the band plays AND people want to hear will not be happening because of no piano player! I love Tim Reynolds (his solo show is awesome if you get the chance--wicked Betrayal/Kashmir set in Raleigh this past Fall) and his touch can already be felt in the songs this year (I've listened to everyone so far). Rhyme and Reason in Camden kicked ass because of Tim. However, I am going to miss Bartender and Pig this year at the two shows I am going to.

To all the DMB haters above--get a life!

just saw dmb last night without butch. not the same. they had reynolds on guitar adding his noise to the mix. i've seen dmb 20 times and this is the first time seeing them with tim reynolds. i hope it's the last. he addded nothing except on the pink floyd "money" cover which needed an electric solo. two step, bartender...nothing will sound the same without butch. interesting to see all the people who only have the studio albums as point of reference. too bad that not everybody knows about the live trax series.

I can't help but notice that there are an awful lot of people who are making comments with no relevance to the story. Anyway, it's too bad Butch left, I'm gonna be seeing them at Noblesville next month and it sucks because I love keyboards as a compliment to all the other instruments. Anyway, I'm kinda sick always hearing from people that "DMB sucks". There's a difference between saying someone sucks as a musician and if you just don't like their style of music. For instance, I don't like Jessica Simpons music but she has a good voice. 50 cent on the other hand (and most rappers), sucks because he has no talent. DMB is made up of extremely talented musicians and people who deny that are a bunch of pogues (pardon my language).

Wow, I wanted to know where Butch was at the Hartford show and found this site. Lets think about this, change is good? I missed Butch on the Keys last weekend, but Tim brought a whole new sound to the show, it rocked.

Yes some people might think DMB sucks, it's still a free country (this week) and you can have your opinion. DMB helped me fill a musical void I fell into after Jerry Garcia died. No other band has matched the energy of the Dead live as DMB does. I have seen over 600 shows including 70+ Grateful dead shows. There is more talent in the DMB line up then in any other touring band today, but Bela Fleck & the Flecktones or Trey's band (not phish)could make an interesting debate. Give Peace a chance.

I'm very sad to see Butch leave. I think he is a perfect fit for this band. "Bartender" from the Fenway Park show is a great example. I listen to the intro to that song then FF to Butch's piano solo. To me, those rare treats that Butch would give us never got old. I always wanted him to solo like that more often. I don't think that people really understand how much he contributed. Even when he is not doing any "in your face" solos, he was great at being part of the foundation for the other soloists. And as far as him only being a sideman to this band, maybe he wanted it that way for the freedom. Also- Am I the only one who thinks that Tim's "Dark sie of the Moon" playing style does NOT fit into the texture of this band? I have tickets to two shows at the Gorge in a few weeks. Im disappointed that LeRoi wont be there, disappointed that Butch wont be there, hoping Rashawn will be there and afraid that Tim might be. It should be ...interesting.
