Dennis Chambers is the man
It is interesting that you mention Marcus Malone. As one who has collected many early live Santana tapes, I think Michael Shrieve replacing Marcus was the final piece that made that original Santana era so great. If you compare that (officially-released) Live at the Fillmore to recordings made a couple months later, after Mike joined, there is a huge difference. Michael Shrieve rules! (along with Carlos, Gregg, Coke, Chepito, etc)
The current guys (Benny, Chester, Raul, et al) are no slouches either.
If I were Santana I'd wear a Santana shirt too.
hey now! let's not forget about the great Tony Lindsey on vocals!! he's been holdin' that chair down for at least a decade now. that's one soulful cat.
nice review kacey. too bad they didn't play hope you're feeling better. gotta love santana sporting the santana shirt.
I don't know. I just caught about 30 minutes of Santana's set at the Memphis in May festival and pretty much concluded that Santana was definitely not what he used to be. Each song sounded cheesier than the one before it and maybe there was a good run of songs that I missed out on, but after a few songs it was obvious that the show was not what I was hoping for. He's still got the skills, no doubt about it, but the vibe was just a little bit too much Gloria Estefan for me.
First Show I ever saw - Santana - Garden State Arts Center, NJ. 1983 - Thank you Steve Welitoff. My life has never been the same. Saw him again in '97 and he rocked just as hard. Keep up the good work, Kaceman.
Santana is a f-ing legend and always will be. The man rocks!
A little off topic, but Carlos and Co. did introduce Phish to Europe...
I don't have much to say other than: Great review! Got to love the Filmore and the history that goes with it.
Hey habes! Whats wrong with Gloria Estefan? You must hate dancing.
looks interesting, but last time I saw him in the 90's, he played the exact same show in knoxville and chattanooga.. exact. thats not so cool considering his huge catalog. peace.
Very well written review thanks for that.
Good to hear that Carlos can still bring it, esp. considering some of the fromage hes marinated in the past decade.
I seriously doubt they played the exact same show in Knoxville and Chattanooga. Searching the Santanamigos archive, I see they played both those cities in 1995. Although they don't have a song list for Knoxville, all the other shows have variations in the setlists.
