Trey Anastasio Gets Reduced Sentence for NY Drug Charges

Trey Anastasio
As we've been following the trials and tribulations of Trey Anastasio we have a new chapter to share. As Forbes.com is reporting, Big Red received a reduced sentence of three years' probation following his successful completion of a treatment and counseling program.

Anastasio entered a guilty plea to a felony charge for possession of a controlled substance (painkillers) after being pulled over in December 2006 for driving erratically. The 43-year-old Anastasio's sentence was reduced to a misdemeanor because of his upcoming completion of the drug program and subsequent hours of community service. Had he failed to complete his program he was looking at three years in jail. Anastasio served two days in jail earlier this year for missing a drug counseling session.

Trey currently has one show scheduled for the summer on August, 2 at the Newport Folk Festival in Newport, RI where he will perform solo acoustic.

At first I was very excited by this news, Trey is now on probation for three years and can leave new york and do things again. However my fear is that he's not completely clean, goes back on road gets busted and goes to jail for a long time. So I hope that our pal is better and ready to play for us all again, I just hope this wasn't jumping the gun too soon.

You can always tell, it's the youngin's who want a tour. Peeps are begging for a tour, like they never put on a tour before. You missed the 21 years of touring minus the hiatus. Deal with it. Dont beg for it. They've been there and done that.

It's great to see Trey alive and healthy. Play if you want Big Red!

Anyone who saw a good number of shows the last few years knows that the unlikely reunion tour will be far off because it took them years to all find the same wavelength and they should have enough pride not to comeback and put on mediocre shows like we saw on many nights before the break up. Trey needs to worry about staying clean and that typically means staying off the road. I would rather see him healthy than in concert. Thanks for all the memories. We'll all still be here when your good and ready.

I agree with most everyone, that a reunion tour would suck. Maybe I think that cause, after my first show I knew Phish was on to something good, and I busted my ass to see as much as I could, knowing it would end one day. You won't find moments in a box.

No, it wasn't a good thing that they inspired a bunch of shit bands, like your cheese, it was a terrible thing, but it was inevitable. As far as you saying that chesse has twice the jam power, I don't even know how to respond to that its so ridiculous. And isn't Jason Hann the percussionest they got to sound more like Panic? Has that band ever even had an original idea?

Someone stop minding the gate over on the Phantasy Tour forums?? Good grief people. If I want to join in the "my band is better than your band" debate can someone tell me what the unit of measurement is for Jam Power?

Apparently the formula is 2P=SCI, is that right? Is there a metric conversion for determining the Jam Power of Canadian bands?

First off, it's wishy washy with the whole reunion thing. I don't think they'll do it for years if at all. Phish was always one of the more unique bands to ever exist. My personal favorite, however they have kind of become like LSD for me; a great party that I always loved, but it's ran its course and now we have to move forward in life. I love Phish as much as anyone, but I don't think they'll ever tour again. The best thing would be to play a two or three day fest every couple of years. That way Trey doesn't get sick of it, and it wont just be another place for hippies to keep there life-line of touring in their systems. But if you think for a minute that everything post hiatus was crap, then you're a fool, and should really check out the New Year's Run in Miami 12/28/03-12/31/04. The four best nights of my life. And yes, their albums started to show Phish swimming in a different current, but the albums were still very amazing, and their live shows only got better. Have fun listening to stale cheese. I'll be swimming with the Phish heads. Love you Big Red. Stay sober. And thanks for all the great memories.

Agree %100. It would be awesome if they just played a fest or two per year or have a 2-3 day campout themselves and just leave it at that. And make ticket prices really high so it doesn't fill up with dirtballs. They should not do full-blown tour again.

I am only 25 so I obviously missed a BUNCH of these past tours (wish I had) but don't give a damn. There's plenty of wonderful liveness out there, and there always will be. I was not raised a hippie, but that doesn't mean I can't dig the sound. The music is all that keeps us going so lets all stop trashing it.

I don't foresee a Phish reunion in the near future...that would be a bad thing for Trey I think. I have some friends that had some opiate problems and every day is a constant battle. I think the Phish/parking lot scene would be something that Trey is really trying to avoid for awhile... Although I did read a great interview with Chris Kuroda (here's the link: http://www.jambands.com/Features/content_2008_05_04.00.phtml) where Chris says that Trey has "big plans" as he had spoken to him 2 days prior. I am kind of in the same boat as Jenny Jen. I'm older now. I actually came onto the scene rather late (I was 20 when I saw my first show in 1999) but I have seen almost 40 shows since then. I now, and always have had a full-time job and I would follow the band for a leg or 2 each year when time permitted. I can see how the young ones want to see Phish. I never got to see Jerry. But I feel that generation X,Y had an amazing thing as far as having Phish. They were truly the last great jamband, and by that I mean being able to pack an amphitheatre like the Tweeter Center or MSG. I don't really see many bands that could take up the mantle that Phish left behind. There is a reason why this is the last year for the Jammys.

Anyone who is posting on this thread must have some interest in Trey or Phish, or they wouldn't post. But, stop all the negative feedback, who cares who youv'e seen what you've done we all have the same interests deep down and thats music, so stop the hating, and as for all the haters go bash a band that is actually worthy of bashing. Phish deserves a lot more respect than some people give them. None of you people on here can ever play guitar as well as Trey and there is no band today that comes close to what they did, so stop comparing Phish with other bands. Trey though is still 43 years young and has a while to mold his career and start fresh again.

I mean, its clear that anyone who got to see phish tour in their prime got the better end of the stick so to speak, but why should you feel that you are somehow better than anyone who didn't. Obviously people who haven't seen phish are dying to do so, and is that really so hard to understand? And whats the deal with all the rippage on the new era of the jam scene? Some of you are stuck in the past and have your heads jammed so far up your own asses that you can't realize that there is plenty of unbelievable music out there still, and that although phish was probably the best thing thats ever happened in the jam scene, they are not the be all and end all. Stop being so fucking critical and feeling the need to compare everything to phish, its narrowminded.

Definitely gotta agree with perceheadies on the new era bit...even tho we've all gone completely off-track/out of our minds...there's so much shit out there to shake one's ass to. :)

Coventry happed when I was twelve so I never got to see a show and as much as I want to see one, after listining to phish from all eras and their solo projects I can't see why as musician's they would get back together. the sound od the solo's is so different and anything they did would be ripped as a letdown by haters because they have done almost everything worth doing and it would take two years for them to get theire chemistry back.

lemme just say...everyone loves phish. everyone wants to see a reunion. maybe it will happen, maybe it wont, lets just wait and see. same goes for SCI, and same goes for the dead now...hey, maybe jerry will come back, who knows. to all the old bitter assholes - sorry that i was only 6 when jerry died and didnt really get into phish until it was too late. i would love to have been there, but i wasnt, so stop rubbing it in our faces about how much better and more elite and more experienced you are in the whole jam scene, we dont give a fuck. and enough with saying how all the jam bands today suck too, its completely not true, and makes you sound ignorant.

and to jennyjen...way too hot to be in that over 30 bitter club

Trey should've taken the "David Crosby route" and sat the 3 years... he'd be more than halfway through all this and not have to deal with asshole probation officers...flat time baby.

Trey- please embrace the fact that you are an excellent guitarist, but not meant for solo work. Get Phish back together and with them, create NEW music, and damnit, get a tour working for us all!

Gawd, young people are sensitive. I feel like giving a tissue to some of these posters. I haven't read one thing from the "over 30 club", lol, that sounds bitter. It maybe isn't what you youngins want to hear, but it isn't bitter. The young always misinterpreting the old, and vice versa...

SCI vs. Phish vs. Widespread -- why does this battle always pop up here? -- they're all great in their own way -- & the fact is 2 of 3 no longer tour -- i've honestly had fun seeing all 3 -- & i'll take any or all of them over say, donna summer!

Wow, every thread on this site turns into band bashing, I find it hard to believe that so many people just hate on such great bands. A huge reason for alot fans to go to the shows is the enormity of the party you're attending with so many like minded people. The article is about Trey getting clean, not who's better Cheese/Panic/Phish? There's no reason to quarrel everytime news about someone in any of these bands shows up on here. On a lighter note, it's hilarious how everyone throws a line at jenny jen every time she posts, i do agree with them though, wow!

I am so pissed off right now I can hardly write. I am about to turn 32 and from what I have been reading that means that I am really fu*%ing old, why didn't anybody tell me sooner. I'm gonna go put a tombstone on lay-a-way, take care everybody.

How about a time out on all the bashing for a moment and give this a little thought:

Seeing how things turned out in August of '95, if you could've maybe taken some of the pressure off Jerry by saying, "You don't have to tour for our sakes - we love you and we want to to be healthy and with us a long time", would you have done it? Yeah? Well ... maybe the same goes for Trey. These folks don't live just to please all of us- and they don't make changes in their lifestyles to hurt us ... don't hate them for stepping off the ride if they need to.

i'm a lifeguard, and when I do my job poorly, people die. When trey does his job poorly, many people get upset. When you take pride in your job, and you strive for excellence, you make the world a better place. Do a good job trey, do a good job.

Ok ... the revolucione is not going to occur. Period. Gotta agree with everything iplaybassguitar said...Jen, leave us alone, let us jam like you once did to the band(s) you believed to be the ultimate, and grow old and accept it. Stay in the 'scene'. It's rockin. Not sayin you're too old to continue, just get over it and start dancin again. Damn girlfriend, you are nice-lookin but you ain't the only one hon.

All you who think your too old to hit the road at 30, its all in the mind, Im soon to be 34 an can tell you Id be right there touring IF IT happens. In my opinion a lot of my old friends that deserted the scene in 99-00 helped contribute to the downfall of it. At the Dead you had tribes who helped the kids learn the way, Phish was just a free for all, its just a reflection of society as a whole really. If they do it I hope its full out 96 style, there would be less demand 4 tix if they did many many shows

If Trey puts Phish back together he will fail his whizz quizz off of a 20,000 person contact high from audience nuggs. Its better that he waits. (I'm joking of course, so get off of my balls.)Whoever said he should sit a (TEXAS!) prison like David Crosby instead of roaming free is a mongoloid. BTW, Jenny Jen is a tough mama. She laid down an old fashioned playground bitch slap. Yes kids, you truly did miss out. Phish's best gigs were in theatres (pre 96)not arenas and giant mud/shit holes. I know everyone says Jerry's glory days were the 70s, but check out practically any Spring '87 tape, esp. Hampton, Philly, or Worcester: Post-coma fire breathing Garcia. P.S. I saw Stevie Ray Vaughn 4 times and he smokes the living shit out of any guitar player post Hendrix and Duane Allman, so you little bastards missed out on that too.

Bisco kids don't need Trey. Barber is the shit!! He may not be trey but that is what makes them tDB not Phish. The only reason I want Phish to get back together is for cheap biscuit aftershows!! Hell Yeah.

i think pages letter answered all your questions, however i will say this. If Trey has put some real time into his recovery and is seriously working the program of the 12 steps that has worked for millions, he can be anywhere at anytime and he will remain clean. If you can recover the obsession will be lifted and you will not use if you remain spirtualy fit. I hope he is doing it for real and not playing games with the drug court. Crazy me and him where in the exact same place then and i am hoping now!
