Jersey's own Jounce took the stage friday night at the Mexicali Blues Cafe in Teaneck, NJ. It was the band's first appearance in NJ since June, so expectations were high, to say the least. The venue had just hosted a double bill of Uncle Sammy and Addison Groove the night before, and one could spot many familiar faces from that show in the Jounce crowd.

Jounce started their first set around 10:30. The set contained Jounce standards such as the spacey "Heyah" and the rockin "Vinny's Adventures." Also in the first set Jounce paid homage to the club's Grateful Dead roots with a rendition of "Mama Tried." Stevie Winwood's "Gimme Some Lovin'" closed the first half of the show, much to the delight of the crowd. After a short break the boys returned to the stage. Everyone knew they were in for something special when they saw Ross Buffa, a sax player who occasionally jams with the band, lingering around the side of the stage.

The second set opened strong with a new reggae tune entitled "Ridin Smooth." The song has a great feel to it and ended with a wailing solo by keyboardist Dan Mallon. Straight after reggae, Jounce launched into another new tune, "Id," which has a great laid back groove, along with an explosive jam in the middle of the song. Ross Buffa took the stage shortly after "Id", and played along with the band on the jazz/latin piece "Lunch" and the funky "Syph Song." After that it was a cover of James Brown's "Sex Machine," which sent the crowd into a frenzy. The second set closed with a uphoric "Nag's Head," which featured a long solo by Buffa, as well as a "Gimme Some Lovin'" tease. Jounce then left the stage, only to return and encore with the Average White Band classic, "Pick Up the Pieces." The crowd showed their apprectiation, as they were thrilled with the intensity of the second set. Many proclaimed it was the best Jounce show they had seen all summer.

The band now heads to NYC next weekend, headlining the beautiful club, Tobacco Rd. on Fri. August 17th. Their last appearance of the summer will be at the OUR Fest in Obelisk, PA, with the likes of Deep Banana Blackout, The Slip, Miracle Orchestra, and Tom Constanten.
