The 27s — The Greatest Myth of Rock & Roll

Creators Josh Hunter and Eric Segalstad are publishing a complete and illustrated account of the 27 phenomenon titled The 27s — The Greatest Myth of Rock & Roll.

"The 27 Club refers to Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Jim Morrison and Kurt Cobain," says author Eric Segalstad. "But far more interesting is the greater 27s story and the fact that it tells a surprisingly complete history of rock & roll: Starting with Robert Johnson's death from poisoned whisky seventy years ago, through doo-wop, Rolling Stones founder Brian Jones, Pigpen of The Grateful Dead, Alan Wilson of Canned Heat, the little-known father of funk, Gary Thain, The Stooges, Badfinger, Big Star, Minutemen, Echo & the Bunnymen — and so on all the way through Jeremy Ward of The Mars Volta."

"It's a story that goes a lot deeper than a simple biography," says illustrator Josh Hunter whose artwork re-introduces these artists for a new generation. "It's about the various aspects of artistdom, pop culture, philosophy, and the ancient power of an incredible number."

Hunter's prior work includes hand-drawn posters and silk screens for Bill Graham Presents, Widespread Panic, Michael Franti & Spearhead, Derek Trucks Band, Stockholm Syndrome, Robert Fripp, Porcupine Tree, New Monsoon, String Cheese Incident, STS9, and many more.

The 27s — The Greatest Myth of Rock & Roll will be released later this year and you can stay updated by signing up to the mailing list at www.the27s.com.

Kurt Cobain did like to smell his own butt a lot, but he had a lot of insight and humility to, so apparently there's more insight and wisdom garnered from sticking one's head up one's butt than one would think. Suicide is selfish, it's sad.

cobain was a genius, just not a musical genius, and in utero is one of the best albums ever made. fuck all you fake-ass hippies.

Looking forward to reading this book. No history of the "seen" will satisfy everyones idea of who deserves mentioning, but anyone that attempts to right their own take on it should be commemorated for doing a great service to the memory of the community. Nirvana and Alice and Chains may have not been the best bands by far, but they defined an era and they changed the direction of the music. Not many of the greatest rock stars can be accreditted with such accomplishments. I give this a big thumbs up.

This book looks pretty cool. However, the trailer does remind me a little bit of that terrible Jim Carrey movie where he's obsessed with some number and it keeps popping up everywhere in his life. Did anyone actually bother seeing that POS flick?

cuttyfives, is that brain damage the reason you choose to come onto nearly every story to post something negative?

Pretty sure Gram Parsons was 27 also, but maybe 26. Nonetheless, looks like a cool book and I'll definitely be picking it up. Glad to see D. Boon getting the recognition he most certainly deserves.

Hey Weenis...Nice props for Shannon Hoon, he is my absolute favorite ever behind Jerry. FYI, he was 28 when he died.

This book is a fantastic idea and I can't for its release. I'm surprised nobody else (to my knowledge) has followed the history of rock through the 27s. I hope this book establishes enough intrigue for more people to write or make movies on the subject. FYI Gram Parsons died at 26 and Shannon Hoon at 28 - RIP. What a tragic fate for so many incredibly brilliant artists.

To those who don't like Nirvana, I can understand if it's not your cup of tea. But to say they suck when they pretty much saved popular music form the Hair Metal era. For that ALONE they deserve HUGE props. In case you were to young to remember, the grunge era really happened. Granted, it only lasted maybe 5-6 years, but it was also during the decline of the Grateful Dead and the rise of the whole jamband scene. I honestly think that popular music went downhill in the late 90's with the resurgance of boybands and the acceptance that only R&B and Hip-Hop was "popular" top 40 music.

Thanks for the history lesson CaptColorado. Nirvana is dead and done and hair metal is returning this summer, so who is supposed to "save us" this time? "the grunge era really happened" ?!? Also, since when does anyone who visits this site give a shit about "popular" top 40 music? Get off the drugs man.
