THE JAMMY AWARDS ANNOUNCE 2008 NOMINATIONS
WARREN HAYNES AND GRACE POTTER TO HOST THE MAY 7TH AWARD SHOW

The Jammy Awards will be held Wednesday, May 7, 2008 at WaMu Theater At Madison Square Garden. Hate to say it, but that Zeppelin show was weak. AOD is dominant, but Cornmeal has to have new groove in the bag. Blue Turtle Seduction is awesome, but Cornmeal plays the same genre of music beyond comparison. Last time I saw Cornmeal, they sounded like a completely different band, they get so much better and better every time I see them, and I live in the Chicago area and see them regularly. They have added so much depth to their sound, they are just so good.

Cornmeal's awesome, agreed.

Perpetual Groove's been more prominent than bands like Cornmeal and Blue Turtle Seduction for a while now. They may have already been considered in\won the new groove category, idk in past years. They're really great though I agree.

Though I'm sure String Cheese will probably win the best tour award, if the rest of the Panic fall tour was anywhere near as awesome as the two shows I saw in Milwaukee, they deserve the award at least as much as cheese. They were sick (personal bias I know) but like seriously, if you're into Panic check out tbose two Milwaukee shows, absolutely friggin ridiculously great.

Reid Genauer a great song writer and should totally get that award.

Live at the Murat's amazing, good call for best live album.

That galactic album would deserve it if it won best album, I don't know if it'd be considered too unconventional though.

Opinions...opinions

They're giving the lifetime achievement award to that Phish band huh...anybody heard anything from them? They any good? Do they deserve it er?

Does anyone actually listen to that Cold Turkey show? The audio quality is absolutely horrible. It sounds like it is recorded in a fucking wind tunnel. You'd think that the guys who make the show would figure out that nobody wants to listen to such shit quality and maybe invest in a few decent microphones and some noise reduction components. The show has potential guys, but it sounds like crap.

BLUE TURTLE SEDUCTION is phenominal!!! They have a truely unique unclassifiable sound! Every show I go to, they get better and better and never dissapoint! You look around the room and every one is bouncing and singing along and having the time of their life!!! They rage every show no matter what and put everything they got into their music! Their original songs just make my heart glow and the cover songs they play are made totally their own! If anyone asks what BLUE TURTLE SEDUCTION sounds like, I'd tell them it sounds like a Good Time!

Some great nominations are on this list. After spending more time and money branching out a little, I feel less dated and narrow minded in my exposure to most of them. I was a little surprised to see the The Mix-Up by the Beastie Boys. Although a fairly decent instrumental effort, it pales in comparison to "The In Sounds..." and has received lethargic response from fans and less than stellar reviews.

I love off key pirate music, especially when its written and played with conviction and lots of spirit that is undeniably a REALLY great time...Blue Turtle is an extremely creative band that isnt following the typical formula, which obviously makes some people nervous or mad that they get attention. New grooves can be awkward when they arent a familiar sound, but the reward is priceless if you start to like it. Blue Turtle kicks ass....They may not be perfect players or singers, but who said every creative band was perfect? Blue Turtle wants to be the next Phish or Kimock or Umphreys at all. Where they are still working on being a very technical band, they excel in their memorable songs, road determination, awesome energy, and unique flavor, like black licorice.....As far as the management goes, I dont know... I just go to their shows and have a great time, and know that the guys themselves are genuinely into their craft and are very sincere people.

Im so excited for them!! Theres a reason they have created a buzz.....hopefully someday some of you that are unfamiliar will understand why.

As far as Cornmeal goes, I have seen them and cant wait to see them again, tho I think their vocals need even more work, and their songwriting does, too.....but I still cant wait to spend good time with them at High Sierra!

"Blue Turtle Seduction is awesome, but Cornmeal plays the same genre of music beyond comparison."

Cornmeal and BTS are completely different styles of music. They both have a fiddle player, thats about the only similarity.

BTS often gets mistakened for some kind of jam grass band, when they are undoubtedly more rock and roll/shanty punk/pop. They cover Wyclef, Billy Idol, and Manu Chao, whereas Cornmeal covers bluegrass standards mostly ( I will stand to be corrected if someone can point out some interesting covers they do). Describing BTS is difficult, whereas Cornmeal sounds like RRE without the great tunes and vocals. Both bands are great but I voted for BTS.

BTS's name is silly: check...but i dont let that stop me from enjoying the heck out of their live shows. So many different kinds of music lovers enjoy their shows: Old farts, punk kids, hippy freaks, snow bettys, jocks, yuppies, you name it, people dance.

I think they totally deserve new groove. I hve seen them sound a little off from time to time, but mostly they sound really solid lately, and I think their harmonies are alive, well, and kicking.

best live album is difficult choice! Umphreys, Lotus, and HBR all deserve it!

Since the beginning, I thought the whole idea of the Jammys was great. It honored the genre's roots while giving a valuable and deserved nod to up-and-coming bands and hard-working scene insiders (the Grahamy Jammy), as well. But for me, the awards took a bit of a credibility hit last year when it just didn't happen.

Maybe it's just me. Maybe I missed an announcement or an explaination. But did anyone else hear what happened to create a one-year gap in the awards? Just wondering.

You just don't hear about this happening with any other respected industry awards.

And for the record, I thought the midnight Mule set at Bonnaroo last year was flat-out unbelievable. I've told many folks that seeing all those artists gathered around and shooting the bull between stage appearances was akin to seeing a live Vanity Fair cover shoot (the one they do every year at Oscar time).

The Live DVD absolutely has to be Stranger: Bernie Worrell on Earth.

It's absolutely heart wrenching that someone like Bernie can get so little credit for what he's done for music. (He's probably the single most sampled artist in all of hip hop.) Our precious Phish, Bisco, UM and Cheese might never have even been possible without Bernie Worrell.

Good NOMS on the NEW GROOVE!! It is a tough choice, but someone said that Cornmeal and BTS are the same genre and thats not true. Blue Turtle is in their own Genre! , its not bluegrass, its all original besides a few hip hop covers. I think Cornmeal deserves recognition but people need to look at songwriters and creativity when voting for something like this. Please listen to some of blue turtles studio work because its amazing and no one in their catagory can compare to that west coast tahoe sound.

oh yeah, and as far as the cold turkey downloads, they do rock but tell Benji eisen and the other dude to turn down their damn mics. Its horrible and Ive def lost more hearing from their vocal levels than from the 1500+ shows Ive attended.

I was wondering the same thing, overall! What happened last year?? I think the concept of the Jammys is great, but since the ballot box can be stuffed by anyone who knows even a little bit about cookies, then the awards pretty much lose all meaning in my eyes. It's just another silly popularity contest & marketing piece by Relix and jambands.com, as far as I'm concerned. "...voted on by the discerning ears of the fans..." my ass.

In recent months the New Groove of the Month honors have gotten kind of skewed. They originally were for those band picked by the jambands.com and I will assume Relix staff as worth of the distinction, now it is just another ballet to be stuffed via their monthly polls, which to me doesn't really prove anything and more than that just seems lazy on the part of the staff.

USTORM show was fantastic, voted for that, as well as Sharon Jones.

Should be one hell of a party. See you in NYC.

JonnyGoff, you have too people from Bisco, and Joe Russo, I think that counts as somewhat of a jamtronic/Livetronica presence. Don't you think?

Mad props to all this year’s New Groove Nominees but personally I’d have to say, Blue Turtle Seduction for New Groove of the Year!!!!

These guys really impress me more and more every time I see them. Their diversity really makes them hard to categorize and that’s what really makes them stand out from what a lot of other bands are doing right now. One minute they are playing some rock, jam grass, funk or pop and the next minute they could be playing reggae, hip hop or some kind of European jig. It almost reminds me how many people were feeling about the Jammys Lifetime Achievement Award winners Phish when they first started to make the scene. (No, I didn’t say BTS sounds like or is like Phish) It just seems to take a little more time for some people to warm up to them until they have heard them enough and began to understand what they are trying to do creatively and musically. Their playing, harmonizing and stage presents have grown in leaps and bounds in the past year or so from rigorous touring and extended studio time. Most of the songs BTS plays are originals but when they do throw in some covers they are from bands that no one else is covering like Manu Chao, The Be Good Tanyas, Pearl Jam, Wyclef Jean, Violent Femmes and Billy Idol.

Give a listen to them from a recent show at the Eldo in Crested Butte, Colorado http://www.archive.org/details/bts2008-03-17.bts2008-03-17sdb.flac16 or checkout their myspace page http://www.myspace.com/blueturtleseduction and have a listen for yourself. Vote Turtle in ‘08

I have enjoyed reading peoples choices for the Jammy's, please continue is is interesting! I'm still not decided between BTS and Cornmeal. Both are so great. I just keep listening to both of them thinking I'll decide which one I like more eventually.

"In recent months the New Groove of the Month honors have gotten kind of skewed. They originally were for those band picked by the jambands.com and I will assume Relix staff as worth of the distinction, now it is just another ballet to be stuffed via their monthly polls, which to me doesn't really prove anything and more than that just seems lazy on the part of the staff."

Actually, both Cornmeal and Blue Turtle, and Im pretty sure a couple more on this list WERE picked by the staff. I know that the bands mentioned above were not voted on by those polls. Neither ever won. Mr Blotto won one of those polls, and they are not on the New Groove nomination list.

"they routinely have to "pay" the recipients to show up. This creates a "draw" so that the promoters can than charge the ticket holders and advertisers a premium to be a face at the event."

yeah i believe that's called a "concert." you "pay" to buy "tickets" that "allow" you to enter the "theatre" at madison "square" "garden."

as an example -- i pay to see string cheese incident. they pay me back with groovage. its a great arrangement. you should join society one day man, you might like it.

oh and dude are you saying that neil peart isn't the best drummer ever?

i agree with trix townly. the two bts shows i have seen just didn't really do it for me. i plan on giving them another chance at desert rocks, but after seeing the heavy pets this weekend, i would love to send them good energy because these super young guys truly live up to their heaviness. boombox and al are truly amazing as well. i guess there is just a ton of new bands that we are so lucky to get ear fulls of anytime instantly!

"Cornmeal covers bluegrass standards mostly ( I will stand to be corrected if someone can point out some interesting covers they do). Describing BTS is difficult, whereas Cornmeal sounds like RRE without the great tunes and vocals. Both bands are great but I voted for BTS."

Yes, of course Cornmeal does bluegrass covers considering that is one of the primary influences of their music. I mean look at the instruments they're playing! But I've also heard them cover everything from Marley to the Dead to the Talking Heads to Bob Dylan, etc. etc.

Cornmeal sounds like Railroad Earth without the great tunes and vocals? Give me a break, both Cornmeal and Railroad Earth are incredible bands but they both have completely distinct sounds. Railroad Earth leans more towards traditional bluegrass but with a sound uniquely their own. Cornmeal is jamgrass/rage music! I was there for their Winter Wednesdays run this past year as well as the year before, and have caught many other shows in between. The reason Cornmeal is getting my New Groove vote is because I feel that their sound has evolved significantly and are able fuze different genres of music in their playing.

They'll play a traditional two and a half minute bluegrass number (Molly & Tenbrooks for example) except they'll rock it for 20+ minutes straight. And it's not a sleepytime, loses the crowd's attention type jam either. I believe it's the guitarist who was quoted as saying that the band goes out with the intention of "attacking their instruments" pretty much. That 25 minute jam will incorporate funk, groove, rock, a bit of trance, etc. And all with a bluegrass undertone. Incredible stuff.

Phish is a great band but a lot of their fans are pretentious, elitist pricks (see above).

Samson72, you are sort of dumb. Nobody is still touring w/ String Cheese. They broke up STUPIDASS!!! And besides, they RULE!!! You obviously didn't attend one of the HOT shows. (Eagles in Milwaukee '04, Somerset, WI '01 & '02). As long as Bill Nershi is not singing, they are one of the greatest "jambands" of all time, hands down. I do agree with you about Phish though. They are the best (other than GD & Dylan.)
