CRAZY HORSE TOAST

Neil Young
In 2000, Crazy Horse was in San Francisco, south of Market Street, at an old studio called "Toast." Coltrane had recorded there, among many other jazz greats, known and unknown. The Dot-Com boom was happening and buildings were being bought and turned into lofts or torn down completely and rebuilt. New money was everywhere. Toast was a target. The place was a little run down and sort of on its last legs.

To a man, if you asked Crazy Horse about these sessions, you would learn that it was a depressing atmosphere and things were not going well. The band recorded there for months and came up with very little. Nothing, other than one song, "Goin' Home" was ever finished. But a lot was started. Several of the songs written at Toast showed up on the Are You Passionate album with Booker T. and the MGs. But that album met with mixed reaction.

Now, years later, John Hanlon, the original co-producer with Neil, is at work mixing all of the Toast material. Many songs share a bluesy, jazz-tinged vibe as a common thread. Three solid rockers are interspersed in the mix. Other songs are long with extensive explorations between verses, a Crazy Horse trademark, kind of like a down-played Tonight's the Night, except these songs deal directly with love and loss, not drugs. The ambient atmosphere, foggy, blue and desolate, pervades many of the tracks, if not all, with Tommy Brea's muted trumpet and dusky male and female counter-part BGs occasionally surfacing from Poncho and Ralph on one side, Nancy Hall and Pegi Young on the other. A cool and sleepy lounge piano rises in the fog occasionally.

The result of this is perhaps one of the most under-estimated and deceptive Crazy Horse records of all time, with many songs originally discarded, and then re-recorded with Booker T. and the MGs. The original performances now surface again through a foggy past. Like an abstract painting, lyrical images of a love lost and maybe even destroyed forever just refuse to die, creating a landscape littered with half-broken dreams and promises.

Toast is coming, a dark Crazy Horse classic for the ages. This first NYA "Special Edition" is the beginning of a new series of unreleased albums.

Stay tuned for details on Toast...

This is my favorite kind of Crazy Horse stuff. Their haze is unique, something like jazz with massive, overdriven amps. Glad this is seeing the light of day.

Hey Thing11 - I looked at your profile and you have no favorite bands.

Why are you here? Just to insult certain bands and people who like certain bands, or to insult everyone? Is being mean your idea of fun or something?

Apparently insulting people is your idea of fun, and that is the only reason you are on this website. I love live music and that is why I am here!

Thing11,

What? Go read an article about the disco biscuits or string cheese incicent. Neil Young is a living legend, and Crazy Horse is one of the best bands he's ever been a part of, so I doubt this is the last time you see an article about them on jambase. Listen to "Everybody Knows This is Nowhere" then "Tonight's the Night" then "Re-Act-Or" then "landing on water", and then tell me it all sounds "similar" and "boring". Or, just admit you don't know what you're talking about, and shut the fuck up. Neil is the man.

I never understand your comments Thing11. If you like music why don't you have any of them as you favorites? Yes I do know other people can see them. I like all the bands in my favorites, what bands do you like?

Andy, he had no favorite bands because his account was created this march, less than a month ago. Clearly the account was made for the sole purpose of getting the reaction out of people that he got out of you. Guess he got booted tho? Didnt realize jambase could do that... good shit

Tonight's the Night and On the Beach were pretty much put together the same way. Easily my 2 fav Neil albums.

I need to check out Toast then Are You Passionate. It would be cool to see how the songs transform.

Neil can crank out and crank out and I still dig it.

And isn't Neil working on some crazy 10 CD retrospective? Wonder if that will ever see the light of day? The guy stays busy.

greendale is one of my favorite travel albums. i can't drive long distances without this one. i was fairly disappointed with living with war, but chrome dreams ii made up for it. and of course there is rust and live rust... the amazing thing about neil is that he continues to put out great albums. this guy never burns out or fades away....

Are You Passionate? wasn't the best Neil album, but I still thought it was very good. A lot of Neil's talk-singing. Check out the track " Mr. Disappointment." Hopefully it will make it onto Toast with some long Crazy Horse one-chord jams.

I don't agree with Jambase removing his account. After a certain amount of time he would have stopped on his own; we would have ignored him to the point of not even acknowledging his existence. tisk tisk Jambase... conflict is the sign of a health society, however. Rock on Neil, you have quite a storied career.

exactley! Yes he was an anoying little ass-clown, but its a bit nazi-esque to boot him off. By even reacting to his posts, you fell into his lame plan. If ignored, he would have left on his own. ( or someone could have pulled out the oh so insulting " leave, and never come back". That would have showed him! Bua! HA!HA!HA!) Very happy to see Neil and the boys are still in the game!

I agree that I over reacted to the Thing and in the future if a someone acts like that I will just ignore them. It was a heat of the moment thing.
