THE MOST UNLOVED BEACH BOY TURNS 67
You looking at me? |
Mike Love was born on this day in 1941. The early "star" of The Beach Boys, he sang lead on most of their seminal hits until his cousin Brian Wilson took over the artistic reins in the late '60s. Love is the survivor of this American institution. He's been at the helm since they began in 1961, appearing on every album and at every concert since then. Sometimes painted as a cartoon villain for his numerous lawsuits against Wilson, Love remains one of the quintessential voices of the '60s and a pop craftsman of the highest order. We wish you a happy happy birthday, Mike. Hope you get a fat royalty check and lots of garish Hawaiian shirts as presents!
Here's a double shot of vintage live Love from the Boys' first UK TV appearance on Ready Steady Go!, where they performed "I Get Around" and "When I Grow Up (To Be A Man)."
