2008 Jammy Awards Honor Phish

PHISH TO RECEIVE LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD
AT CELEBRATION OF ALL THINGS JAM

"I was so much older then
I'm younger than that now…"
The Jammy Awards will return to The Theater at Madison Square Garden on May 7th. This year's ceremony and all-star concert will mark the seventh installment of the The Jammys, and will feature a special Lifetime Achievement Award presentation to jamband giant, Phish.

"We are extremely proud to present our Lifetime Achievement Award to Phish," says Jammys Executive Producer and Co-Creator Peter Shapiro. "Few bands have meant as much to the improvisational music community as they have, so celebrating their career is something that is a natural thing for us to do."

Produced by Relix Magazine, Jambands.com and Shapiro, The Jammys has become one of New York City's premiere events and one of the top grassroots music events in the world, hosting countless historic, once-in-a-lifetime musical moments, and drawing international acclaim for pairing the stars of the improvisational music scene with leading artists from across the musical spectrum.

The performers for this year's concert, as well as this year's award nominees will be announced in the coming weeks. Tickets go on-sale at Noon EST on March 20 via Ticketmaster and at the Madison Square Garden Box Office.

Well deserved! Phish was it and and no one can replace them! Not one band out there right now comes even close. Phish could start up again and do a arena tour cross country and sell out every show. Name me a band who is playin right now that could that.

scigr8 you really don't know what you are talking about do you. SCI formed in '93, Phish '83. Don't get me wrong I love me some SCI, but they are by no means the "original jammers". Phish uses trampolines and things like that, but SCI has fish, jellyfish and other things like swimming through the crowd. Phish is the backbone of Jambands just as much as GD, so show some respect. Phish shows have been some of my best experiences. Congrats gentlemen.

Phish definitely deserves, although they aren't my favorite jam band. I think Phish has a larger following, but would think Widespread Panic would also be in same class as Phish and would be recognized sometime in the future. Any thoughts?

1radioheader -- " . . . and i tried. . .but Phish has to be my least favorite "jamband" of all time"

I agree. I tried as well. I definitely don't dislike or hate them, but I just never got into them the way I enjoyed the GD. Hey, they filled a void after Jerry died and were musicians with talent and the ability to jam when there weren't a lot of other bands around.... at least not on a national scale. This should mean that they will play together though... that should be exciting for most. Have fun everyone and enjoy.

phish was great, but this all goes to show that no one person or band deserves being named the greatest. music has been constantly changing and being interpreted differently by everyone, so why bother naming one band as the most miportant jam band or the best band or anything? even the dead aren't worthy of being called the most important jam band, because they were far from the first band to improvise on stage. and cottell, radiohead, paul mccartney, and even shit like metalica sell out tours and venues constantly. and im sure if the talking heads or somethin awesome like that reuinited theyd sell way more tickets than phish. if you really think phish is the only band that can sell out a whole tour, you seriously need to take a more in-depth look at the music world.

I realize that every has their opinions, but WTF dude, what rock have you crawled out from.

Lets pray for a song or three here, I hope they aren't above that. They're going to have to at least play whenever they get inducted in the RnR Hall of Fame. Congrats Boys!

hookah420 you have no idea what your talking about. MOE "jams longer than anybody"? Anybody can jam on a note, but phish especially in the early to mid 90's wrote some very well orchestrated music. Phish is the best Jamband ever eventhough they didn't write as much of that music in the latter years. And the Radiohead thing, ????

hookah420. There a wonderful "family" of musicians out there all of whom help to bring together like minds providing an opportunity for great things. Now i missed phish in there golden years, but am well aware of what they have done for the jam community and understand how many people they have helped to enlighten and change for the better. That being said for me..ive grown up in with sci and i wouldn't for a second begin to say that cheese reached the same status of phish, cause they didnt. But what an ignorant thing to say! Cheese helped open up minds and bring people together for wonderful causes and raising awareness with conscious alliance, doing for another generation what phish had done before. They opened to door to a beautiful world for me and provided the opportunities for some amazing experiences. And i know im not alone, dont say the magic that was created year after year at horning's hideout was created by a buncha wannabe's!!! Too each his own, but next time think before you type!!

I actually laughed out loud and got strange looks from the people sitting near me in the library when I read your comment. scigr8 i am the biggest cheese phan but for you to say some comment like that is ridiculous. while cheese and phish are different, their not THAT different. both play varities of musical styles with unique setlists and improvisational transitions, but let's get real, who did it better? the answer clearly lies in the hands of the foursome who will be holding this award in NY this year. This is coming from someone who's best show experience was probably cheese's last shows at red rocks. and no i'm not some heady colorado local. i made the trip from FL to red rocks, 10k, and god knows wherever else cheese would play, and even never seeing phish myself i would be a fool to say that cheese deserves this more. a complete fool. so grab a couple soundboards and try again to listen to what trey and "whats-his-name" are playing because they hook-up improvisationally like no band ever has. Anyone who knows anything about music, or even appreciates it would not have anything bad to say about one of the longest lasting, hardest touring, and always ever changing bands out there. You may not have liked phish, but i took people to shows who really could never appreciate them on a live tape or on a studio cd, and they were blown away by the live performance. SCI has the word cheese in it for a reason, They are all great musicians too, but these younger jamband kids think spinning around in circles with butterfly wings and hoola hoops on to some loopy music means they have intensity, maybe thats because they were dizzy from spinning around in circles too long.

Phish is well deserving of this award. They re-invigorated the "Jam Band" scene after Jerry's passing and made some great music in the 1990's. The Dead were the best improv band ever, Phish was a close second in their pre-hiatus heyday. Unfortunately, there is no one at that level (uniting the tribes, selling out stadiums, making creative music every night) right now. I was lucky enough to see both of those bands quite a few times and for my money the only current band that could reach that level with some more seasoning (and sticking together!) is Tea Leaf Green. Don't get me wrong SCI, Moe, Panic are all good bands but they each have some missing pieces. Peace Ya'll

This is why some people dislike phish fans... radioheader just said that phish deserves to be honored, but they aren't his cup of tea, and he gets many thumbs down for this. So it seems that most Phish fans believe "If you don't like Phish, then you don't know music". At least that is the impression that is made. With that being said let the thumbs down begin...

if phish and SCI were in a MMA match, phish would win by KO or submission in less than 10 seconds. comparing the two makes no sense at all. one is a rock band that likes to take it to another level and one is a bluegrass band that likes to play the same riff for 20+ minutes.

I love all the different opinions being expressed here but the negativity really makes me sad just like many other people that have posted. I love phish and I love SCI, I don't see why there would be so much negativity between the fans of these two bands. I understand why someone enjoys one band over the other but to say SCI can't take solos, or lack intensity is really taking it too far. Why can't people simply say they are not a fan, or don't enjoy certain bands without insulting them and anyone who listens to them? I just wish that some people can enjoy one band without completely insulting another. Phish deserves this award, and SCI will probably also get it in like 10 or 20 years because of thier influence to the jam band communtiy.

Geez you people are tough on bands. If it isn't your absolute favorite band then nobody deserves any recognition. I mean I like Phish, used to go to shows, listened to the cds and enjoyed it. I wouldn't call myself the biggest fan of theirs, but they definitely are worthy of the award they are being presented. I think I read up there that there would be no jambase if there were no Phish, and I agree. They started this movement called Jambands. I mean there were some bands that did it before Phish, but they were basically responsible for the continuation of the festivals and crazy concerts and non-stop touring after the Grateful Dead passed the torch to them. If there was no Phish I don't see so many great festivals and great musicans to choose from these days. We live in a blessed time of having the choice of what we want to listen to and I thank Phish for influencing many of the bands I like today. Congratulations Phish you were one of a kind. enough (f)lame wars already... I believe Phish is the best band to ever play live because they where big when I was a teenager and people tend to get attached to music they listen to at that time. I was 14 in '96 when I saw my first show. Does anyone remember the *energy* of the crowd back then? They would go insane just waiting for the band to go on. Every time the PA music would stop for a second or a roadie would walk on stage they'd absolutely erupt. Combine that with -hands down- the best light show ever and you have yourselves an awesome experience before Trey's pick even touches a string. With respect to the music I'll concede that the lyrics where very bland (as Trey was really shooting for the whole Zappa thing) but it WORKED with the style of music they played. They were certainly the best at jamming because of the secret language and communication drills they worked on relentlessly. Also they where a perfect successor to the Dead because they took the music in a different direction, basically saying, "%^*&% the lyrics, lets just compose some kick as music and then jam for a 1/2 hr." The faster pace was also a good contrast to the Dead's style, compare sparkle to Tennessee Jed. Unfortunately, somewhere in the 98-00 range hard drugs took the place of practicing and the music suffered. I can't fault them, they're human and they held it together for that long. With a backstage environment that has to be really shady even for a rock band, that is saying a lot. They should definitely stay broken up because:

1) They're old, people are usually way past their creative peaks by 45 and their last 2 studio albums are proof.

2) It would ruin their legacy (remember when Jordan came back to the wizards.)

3) They already came back in 2002 and they SUCKED (I'm sorry, but anyone who's been to a decent # of shows in "the good ol' days" knows that NYE2002 was one of their worst shows by far, but not as bad as their last 3 (2xMA and Coventry) IT kicked ass and summer 03 was ok, but aside for that nothing remarkable.

4) Trey will have a -very- hard time staying clean on the road, it's not the right place for a recovering addict.

5) It will take a lot of money and attention away from other upcoming bands.

6) They fact that they don't have the chops to play these songs anymore is just another testament to how complex the music was, (i.e. Reba, Guyute, YEM, etc.)

In summary, there will never be another band that plays Phish's style of music better than them. If they ever have a true successor, it will be someone with a contrasting style (maybe Wilco, with awesome lyrics and a slower tempo.) Who knows. All I can say is it was an awesome time to be alive. I met a lot of cool people, smoked some good pot, and danced my ass off. I hate to see it go, but c'est la vie.

I personally think SCI tries way too hard to try and sound like Phish. I think they stole a good portion of their sound from Phish, going between bluegrass/phunk/almost trance at times. The Grateful Dead created the entire scene, Phish took it to another level with an entire sound of their own, i don't think WSP are the best, but they have their own sound, I really think SCI, Disco Biscuits, and others want to relive what phish already did. nothing new. Phish are deserving of this award, i don't think SCI has even come close to matching what Phish did for the community. fucking hoola hoops (wanna be trampolins), don't SCI use a megaphone? Phish was doing that 20 years ago. Michael Kang is a talented musician, but sounds like he wants to be trey, but doesn't quite have the intensity level. They are the starbucks of Jambands.

Wow! agreed... This thread should be about congratulating the boys on a job well done. Instead it's just petty arguing about cheese and phish. Don't get me wrong I've seen cheese a lot more than phish and those shows always blow me away, but the 7 phish shows I went to were incredible. The whole experience was bigger. They introduced me to the scene at a staggering level that only festivals can give fans now.

Both bands have provided their fans with some amazing experiences with personalized intimate festivals. I'm writing this response because I want to. period.

the first time I actually heard Phish was when I was playing in a band. The guitar player and I had been playing alot of Allman Bros. and Hendrix, and he came to me one day saying that we should play a song called "Twist." We jammed on it for a little while, but I just could not get the hang off it. It was crazy because I had never had heard of the song or the band before, and I actually tried to do my own version of the song, which sounded nothing like the actual version of twist. It was later that my buddy informed me of who wrote the song and album it was on. Man...I have to be honest that the first time I listen to phish I just didn't get it. the same guy put on Pictures of Nectar, and it was just way to out there for me. Two years later my buddy picked me up and we went on a burn cruise. During the ride he put on Farmhouse. I was jamming comfortably in the backseat until he put on PIPER. I was just sitting in the backseat, stoned, and it just all hit me at once. It just felt good. We drove all the way home listening to the rest of the C.D. My brother told me last week that only stoners like phish...If that's true than it's true. But, I love the effort

Peace for all.

Thanks, I hope this story makes sense

This award has been a given for some time now. It's PHISH. If I'm not mistaken they are the main reason this website was established. Nothing can match a wicked Bowie or a Hood that shreds until your mind melts. Not to mention how much the guys could make you laugh with their stage antics. There will never be another band quite like 'em.

Phish definitely displayed instrumental genius as did(and do)many of their counterparts at the forefront of "jamband" stardom. To dismiss credit is nothing shy of ignorant. It's pleasing to see that there at least seems to be a higher density of people who champion the cause of unity than those who threaten to tear the scene apart. All of these people who make the music we love and rise and fall from stardom are still people, capable of making mistakes and deserving of forgiveness. You people who come here to debase that which you do not understand and/or enjoy have something far uglier than the comments that you post, inside of yourselves, that you will have to deal with...or more likely will ignore. Either way, the true fans that come here to further their knowledge of the music that they love and also to share their experiences will only be those responsible for keeping the scene alive. There are people like you negative ones that corrupt every scene and aint it a bitch that there will always be someone there who loves it more than you hate it?!

First, I'm not going to hate. I'm a lover, I thought that was the overarching connection between us all. I like SCI. I don't think they are a melt your face, head is spinning from a loud guitar band, but they are entertaining and I really enjoyed seeing them the five or so times I was fortunate enough to experience. But I like the melt your face, the only band that I am truly a fan of that doesn't just steal your face right off your head is the grateful dead. We can all agree that they are the forefathers of this great world that we all know. I think Phish does deserve this, for all the reasons mentioned above. I didn't get to see them pre-hiatus, however, I did get a two night stand in cincinnati 03, two nights in deer creek 03, the same in 04 and and IT and Coventry. Coventry was a weird place to be at that time. IT rocked. The Deer Creek shows were outstanding, especially '03. Congrats Phish. Thanks for the good times, guys. I would like to see some love for ABB, they are iconic archetype that deserves to be mentioned with the likes of GD and Phish. I think someday, WSP and hopefully the Mule (thats a bit biased) will join the ranks of the superjamband. Gods that have been sent to us to show the way.

I can't believe how dramatic this website and these posts have become...interesting enough to make me read at times, but as ridiculous as my partner watching sex and the city and me watching as a result. Man, maybe its because I'll be 28 in 2 weeks and getting hityched in 2 weeks, but without respect in our jam community, where is it going? Super sad although its a necessity for people to share a difference of opinion...although some of the sjit on this post is ludicrous. So here' my piece..without GD love none of this scene would be here, period. Is there anybody out there that remembers jambase.com as a side link to Andy Gadiels Phish page? Yeah, thats where it came from, been on this things for well over 10 years and as some other dudes have said, Phish is in a category of their own. It almost makes me sad ti listen to good old phish now because as much as I still love live music and see it a lot, there's just something missing. I definately loved SCI, made Hornings and Berkley last years witnh about 40ish shows total before they split, but not even worth a comparion to Phish...Kang is so sick but totally emulated Trey's mastery of a bad guitar...no worries though, great music all around, but these dudes so deserve this award and they are done, even if they ever did come back, so we all need to just show respect and go see live music...and for the record the only thing that mnakes me jump out of my skin these days is WSP, which I never would have thought while on Phish tour in the good old mid to late 90's. peace to all

*I could be wrong, but I think that a lifetime acheivement award is more indicative that you have many milestones to your credit within YOUR lifetime. I'm not so sure that it is necessary that you are dead (no pun intended) or have one foot in the grave to receive one.

**Another thing, if something means so much to you, I'd wager that your individual experience with it accounts for its value to you. It may be a bit selfish to expect someone else minus your experience to place as high a value on it. I wouldn't make a living on trying to force my hand, people, in hopes that others would accept where I am coming from. It is usually misunderstanding that creates subcultures. And a subculture whose message is rooted enough in truth will inspire acceptance and eventually reveal an understanding, thereby removing the "sub" from the culture.

All of you Phish and SCI 'diehard' fans who are fighting each other should be ashamed of yourselves. You're like little kids. While I retain hope for the scene blossoming into the next musical revolution, I also see it degrading at the same time.

Stay loyal to the scene, take care of each other. Otherwise it will all fall apart, and we'll have nothing to keep us together. To all the negative heads out there, you are all a joke. You've eaten one too many doses and need to remember why you got into this in the first place. It's like the guy at 10k by my tent who went on a tirade about how North Korea was going to take over the U.S. and impose martial law and all this stupid nonsense, the drugs are meant to RELIEVE the stress come on! The scene to me means having fun and laughing at the people who take it too seriously.

Clifton. . . .

No im not 12, Im closer to 30 than I am to 25. . . . . and please go back and read my comments will you, I said Phish deserves the award, you'd have to be a total idiot to disagree, but i also said that I tried to get into Phish (cause many of my friends were WAY into them) but that they just never quite "did it" for me. . .. . if saying that i wanted to like them but couldn't is deserving of some 20+ thumbs down, then that shows the lack of respect in the "scene" today

I never said they weren't talented (they are)

I said they deserve the award (they do)

I never said they weren't the prime mover of the Jamband scene after the dead (they were)

I just said I wanted to like them but they don't quite turn me on (I'm honest)

as a reward i get called a 12 year old, told to suck my mother's dick, and told that if you don't get phish you don't get music. . . ...

think about this. . . . . . .

Congrats all you haters for hating on honesty, way to show a total lack of respect

(and by the way, TDB is ok, but i really prefer Radiohead (obviously), WEEN, STS9, WSP,Anything with Claypool or Karl Denson, YMSB, Outkast, Pink Floyd, The Beatles, Lotus, Wilco, Most all reggae, MOE.,Flaming lips, Jurassic 5,Thievery Corp.,Phil and his friends, Leftover Salmon, etc. etc.)

PHISH, String Cheese Incident, Yonder Mountain String Band, Umprhey's Mcgee, Widespread Panic, Moe., etc all are different groups that are influenced by different styles and genres. They sound different. The only thing these bands share is the love for incorporating collective improvisation into their music. Phish was the band who did this the best. Period. No other group contained four musicians who could communicate that well musically while selling out shows to all of the ignorant fake hippy scene losers who have posted the comments above.

First... I'm not saying that Phish's accomplishments don't deserve to be honored b/c arguably no other band has given more to this community than Phish has BUT.... this smells of a lame attempt by the Jamband community to force the band back on stage together. They've stayed away for 3 1/2 years for a reason. With Trey's recent issues does anyone really think they're ready to be forced on stage together? I hope they are allowed to just accept the award gracefully and then walk back off stage into the silence they've asked us to respect for some 3 1/2 years now. It will be a shame if they feel overwhelmed or pressured by the producers and/or audience to play. Maybe in a larger grouping of artists at the show it would make sense. But IMHO, to ask them to perform as Phish is overstepping a certain boundary of respect.

And "Lifetime" Acheivement? They definitely deserve some type of recognition but "Lifetime"? Does 17 pre-hiatus years and 1 1/2 post-hiatus years of playing together really qualify? I guess in today's age of American Idol and 1-hit wonders, 18 1/2 years is a lifetime...

Anyhow...I think the chances are 1 in 1000 that they play a tune together at the jammys. If that 1 in 1000 chance hits, I bet they play "Heavy Things" Brr drr.

SCIRGR84EVS - SCI "Original"??? If by original you mean a (poor) carbon copy of Leftover Salmon, then you nailed it. You got some learnin’ to do my son.

hippyjessica - You nailed it! You can't compare SCI and Phish. Phish wrote good songs with actual hooks that integrated a variety of styles. They used jamming as a venue to explore their music and did so without wearing out the jam or sticking too long in a groove.

In contrast, SCI "wrote" some of the worst songs in history (accompanied by high school poetry metaphors) that were simply loose frameworks for extended jams that went absolutely nowhere. So, you are correct.

I read that comment and could not read any more.

"Few bands have meant as much to the improvisational music community as they have”

Let’s see. Various Miles and Coltrane combos, Ornette and Don Cherry, Zappa, Dead, Allman’s, Sonic Youth, Clapton, P-Funk, Santana, MMW, The Wailers not to mention just about any bluegrass combo…Not sure the word “few” means what he thinks it means.

First, any clown that thinks that SCI was anything more than a fart in the musical wind is either a moron, under 25 years old, or both, and there's alot in that third category, I'm sure. Phish kicked ass in the 90s, and pretty much sucked after that, (still way better than cheese) but even what they accomplished during that time dwarves any other "jam band", with the exception of course, of the Grateful Dead, and possibly Panic. SCI is a joke, kid, get with the program.

SCI was def. no joke. I knew many deadheads who said fuck Phish and tour with the barefoot boys. Phish rocked the 90's, but if you didn't go see SCI from 1999-2004 ( ie 2002 was the best year period...) then you can't understand why there are many of us who love cheese. STATEMENT # 2: phish is just as goofy as sci ever was, hence why they both can sort of grate on me sometimes.

STATEMENT # 3: they are both gone, so why all the intense debate?

STATEMENT # 4: moe. was EXACTLY where it was at for a while in the late 90's and possibly for a while in the early '00's. and relating this to phish, (regarding popularity, following, and overall greatness) right now the kings are sound tribe, and probably pgroove and umphrey's. it also looks like lotus will innevitably be huge, and though it may never happen, tea leaf green is an utterly great, truly talented band to watch out for.

I've seen Phish way more (100+) than the Grateful Dead (8) due to my age and the fact that Phish used to tear up the midwest on their fall tours, but to me there is no comparison b/w Phish and any of the "jam bands" around now. They were and are the masters of the genre of psychedelic jam. IMO The dead had them on soulful feel and bluegrass/traditional, but just listen to a good version of Blue and Lonesome and tell me Phish cant rock the bluegrass. Prior to that I listened to alot of earlier jam music including at the top of that list Dead, Which changed my life as well. But the

Dead even in their prime could not match the sheer musicianship of Phish. They were a band of consumate musicians. Each of them extreamly deadicated to their instruments. Where with the Dead you had Jerry and Phil. Those guys were, as a band, only as strong as there weekest link, no offence Bobby. And before people get upset I have listened to 1,000s of hrs Dead. Love 'em. And as far as SCI goes Kang was a big Phish fan. Every time I hear that guy play a mando solo I hear Trey. He toltaly coped his sound. They sound more like their influences then then themselves. There is no other band that sounds like Phish.

Good for Phish... Maybe this will inspire a come back and back up everybody's arguments. I dont see how you can say that the "jam scene" would have died without them... Trey even is quoted saying panic helped them out to get big in the south & vis-versa gotta give panic some love too!

PHISH deserves this award but sheesh is just the Jammies not the grammies.... if they win a lifetime achievement grammy award then even those outside our subculture agree on their originality and abilities with duration.... this article has nothing to do with SCI or WSP of BISCO so why even mention them?.... nobody really cares who likes what band more than another...therefore, stating your opinions is just wasting time and bandwidth...because seriously...NOBODY CARES!

Maybe this will lead to a reunion concert, maybe even a tour.

I'm going just for the extremly rare possiblity that phish plays ANYTHING. Besides it will probably be a good time anyway.

phish really deserves this award, they've jamming for longer than anyone and even a few years ago when they split they still were still amazing. I wish i could've seen them in their prime, cause i probably would appreciate them more. For me, they're number 2 all time behind the dead. but still, Congratz Phish!

SCIRG, as well as some of u other idiots, do not know what u r talking about. I thought it was funny when SCIRG said SCI was the original jamband. That comment is not only ridiculous, but his band quit too. Atleast Phish waited 20 yrs to call it quits, rather than 10 yrs for SCI. And if they both came back, Phish would sell out, and SCI would be forgotten and have trouble selling out the local bar.

Phish was more than a band. They were a culture that nobody except the Grateful Dead can be compared to. I was there for both, and I would never say that the Grateful Dead is better than Phish. However, I would say that Phish had more musical energy in their shows than the Dead did, but the Dead is responsible for it all.

Thank u all who know whats real, but Im sorry for u all who didnt get a chance to experience the greatest show on earth. SCI, moe, and even Widespread Panic can not even be placed in the same category as Phish or the Dead.

I want them to get back together too, but not because they were coerced into it. I want them to find what they lost first, and begin the greatest comeback tour ever. Then, I will find what I lost as well, and get my life back where it was in the glory days.

Guys Phish and SCI both are great jam bands instead of fighting over who deserves it more we should be happy for Phish.
