2008 Jammy Awards Honor Phish

PHISH TO RECEIVE LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD
AT CELEBRATION OF ALL THINGS JAM

"I was so much older then
I'm younger than that now…"
The Jammy Awards will return to The Theater at Madison Square Garden on May 7th. This year's ceremony and all-star concert will mark the seventh installment of the The Jammys, and will feature a special Lifetime Achievement Award presentation to jamband giant, Phish.

"We are extremely proud to present our Lifetime Achievement Award to Phish," says Jammys Executive Producer and Co-Creator Peter Shapiro. "Few bands have meant as much to the improvisational music community as they have, so celebrating their career is something that is a natural thing for us to do."

Produced by Relix Magazine, Jambands.com and Shapiro, The Jammys has become one of New York City's premiere events and one of the top grassroots music events in the world, hosting countless historic, once-in-a-lifetime musical moments, and drawing international acclaim for pairing the stars of the improvisational music scene with leading artists from across the musical spectrum.

The performers for this year's concert, as well as this year's award nominees will be announced in the coming weeks. Tickets go on-sale at Noon EST on March 20 via Ticketmaster and at the Madison Square Garden Box Office.

i appreciate the honesty 1radioheader, but wow...if the Dead was #1 then Phish is definitely 1A. For people like me who were a little too young to enjoy the Dead in their prime, Phish was IT! They changed my life for the better!

Well deserved! Phish was it and and no one can replace them! Not one band out there right now comes even close. Phish could start up again and do a arena tour cross country and sell out every show. Name me a band who is playin right now that could that.

is he still under house arrest? Since the Jammy Awards are in New York, i figured all 4 would be capable of accepting the award. A few songs would be quite alright...and yes Phish deserves an award for the music they've put out through the 80s and 90s.

I love SCI, a lot. But I would NOT call them the original. SCI was formed around 10 years AFTER phish.

scigr8 you really don't know what you are talking about do you. SCI formed in '93, Phish '83. Don't get me wrong I love me some SCI, but they are by no means the "original jammers". Phish uses trampolines and things like that, but SCI has fish, jellyfish and other things like swimming through the crowd. Phish is the backbone of Jambands just as much as GD, so show some respect. Phish shows have been some of my best experiences. Congrats gentlemen.

Phish definitely deserves, although they aren't my favorite jam band. I think Phish has a larger following, but would think Widespread Panic would also be in same class as Phish and would be recognized sometime in the future. Any thoughts?

"the raw power of an SCI show"??? That's just laughable. SCI's music, while pretty cool, rocks about as hard as my 3 year old niece.

Congrats Phish, very well deserved. I think Widespread Panic is in the same class as Phish although they may not draw as large of crowds and think they will be honored in the future

1radioheader -- " . . . and i tried. . .but Phish has to be my least favorite "jamband" of all time"

I agree. I tried as well. I definitely don't dislike or hate them, but I just never got into them the way I enjoyed the GD. Hey, they filled a void after Jerry died and were musicians with talent and the ability to jam when there weren't a lot of other bands around.... at least not on a national scale. This should mean that they will play together though... that should be exciting for most. Have fun everyone and enjoy.

phish was great, but this all goes to show that no one person or band deserves being named the greatest. music has been constantly changing and being interpreted differently by everyone, so why bother naming one band as the most miportant jam band or the best band or anything? even the dead aren't worthy of being called the most important jam band, because they were far from the first band to improvise on stage. and cottell, radiohead, paul mccartney, and even shit like metalica sell out tours and venues constantly. and im sure if the talking heads or somethin awesome like that reuinited theyd sell way more tickets than phish. if you really think phish is the only band that can sell out a whole tour, you seriously need to take a more in-depth look at the music world.

SCIRGR84EVS- WOW, out of all of the completely ass-backward, IGNORANT statements that are said here, you take the cake and eat every last morsel of it. shmo-kinn has informed you that you have no F$%^ing clue as to what you are talking about. Now don't get me wrong here, I do hold a SMALL piece in my musical heart for SCI, but they are as corny as a band gets. I realize that every has their opinions, but WTF dude, what rock have you crawled out from.

Lets pray for a song or three here, I hope they aren't above that. They're going to have to at least play whenever they get inducted in the RnR Hall of Fame. Congrats Boys!

Phish is and always will be one of the greatest bands of all time. The crazy atmosphere of a Phish show is one of a kind, and the music will take you to another world. I have been to SCI and Phish, both great, but different. Phish has definately been one of the biggist influences to the jam band world since GD. Very well deserved!!!

I only saw two Phish shows and that makes me appreciate them even more. I just love blasting some old school shows and imagining the band in those goofy short shorts straight dominating a venue. Congrats Phish and heres to many more good times (even if its only me and my friends listening to discs)

hookah420 you have no idea what your talking about. MOE "jams longer than anybody"? Anybody can jam on a note, but phish especially in the early to mid 90's wrote some very well orchestrated music. Phish is the best Jamband ever eventhough they didn't write as much of that music in the latter years. And the Radiohead thing, ????

hookah420. There a wonderful "family" of musicians out there all of whom help to bring together like minds providing an opportunity for great things. Now i missed phish in there golden years, but am well aware of what they have done for the jam community and understand how many people they have helped to enlighten and change for the better. That being said for me..ive grown up in with sci and i wouldn't for a second begin to say that cheese reached the same status of phish, cause they didnt. But what an ignorant thing to say! Cheese helped open up minds and bring people together for wonderful causes and raising awareness with conscious alliance, doing for another generation what phish had done before. They opened to door to a beautiful world for me and provided the opportunities for some amazing experiences. And i know im not alone, dont say the magic that was created year after year at horning's hideout was created by a buncha wannabe's!!! Too each his own, but next time think before you type!!

scigr8-- I love SCI and although I only moderatly got into phish It is still a travesty to suggest the cheese are superior in any way in their contribution to 'the jam world'. I actually laughed out loud and got strange looks from the people sitting near me in the library when I read your comment. Panic will recieve this award either after they retire or in the next few years. The cheese may recieve this type of award sometime if say, there is an off year in music or something like that.

cheers phish

How in the world could cheese get a lifetime acheivement award when they weren't even around for 10 years and they weren't even that big..... haha what a joke....... and calling that thing a mando is another joke. and nershi's guitar play compared to most all bluegrass guitarist is another joke.

. . .. Hey tonebeach. . . . you got some insecurity issues. . . . i didn't say phish sucked, they are obviously a huge musical influence with a sincere, passionate following. . . I just can't get into them, and i know only seeing two shows may not have given me much exposure, but if i don't get into it, why keep going???.. . . . that being said, you can blank your blank with your blank's blank in the blank until you blank. . . . . its people like you who make a person transfer their anger at the fans to the music to the band.. . . . way to represent Phish like an asshole dickhead.
