ANOTHER PLANET, SUPERFLY AND STARR HILL ANNOUNCE
THE INAUGURAL OUTSIDE LANDS MUSIC & ARTS FESTIVAL
MAJOR THREE-DAY EVENT TO TAKE PLACE AUGUST 22-24 IN SAN FRANCISCO'S GOLDEN GATE PARK
RADIOHEAD, TOM PETTY AND JACK JOHNSON TO HEADLINE

Thom Yorke
Another Planet Entertainment, Superfly Productions and Starr Hill Presents, in a partnership with the San Francisco Recreation & Park Department, are proud to introduce the Outside Lands Music & Arts Festival. The inaugural multi-faceted, three-day festival will take place in San Francisco's historic Golden Gate Park August 22 - 24, 2008. Radiohead, Tom Petty and Jack Johnson will headline the event. Full lineup, ticketing, on-sale and other information will be announced throughout the coming weeks.

With the incomparable pedigree of its producers, Outside Lands is set to be the dynamic event with the broad range of entertainment and amusement options you'd expect from the partnering of the co-founders of the Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival with one of the most successful promoters in Northern California. The unique strengths of these two companies using the backdrop of one of the most famous parks in one of the most famous musical cities in the world is certain to make for an unforgettable weekend. Golden Gate Park has been the site of such events as Peter Gabriel's WOMAD Festival, the Tibetan Freedom Concert, the Guinness Fleadh Festival, Love, Laughter & Music celebrating the lives of Bill Graham, as well as single mega-concerts by the likes of Pearl Jam, Neil Young, and most recently the Dave Matthews Band. Outside Lands, perhaps the most ambitious event in the park's history, will be the first annual ticketed large-scale multi-stage event in this historic location. A portion of every ticket sold will directly benefit Golden Gate Park.

With five main performance stages, the music programming will represent a wide range of genres, including rock, blues, reggae, jazz, hip-hop, world, soul, Latin and electronic music. From singer-songwriters to roots acts, rock bands and DJs, major national headliners will perform alongside exceptional emerging talent, making the event a substantial celebration of the established and the cutting edge. Local acts will also be featured prominently as the festival will represent San Francisco's vibrant cultural community. The local flavor will also be seen in the festival¹s concessions, featuring foods from local eateries, as well as in the world of the visual arts, with work from artists in both traditional and new media being featured throughout the event. More information about all the festival attributes and activities will be announced over the coming weeks and months.

Since both Superfly and Another Planet have a strong history of being environmentally conscious organizations, the festival will be a particularly green undertaking, utilizing carbon offsetting, recycling programs, and other greening efforts. Furthermore, the event will directly benefit the San Francisco Recreation & Park Department with a special annual donation.

With a seemingly endless selection of music and activities, the Outside Lands Music & Arts Festival is certain to be one of the ultimate summer destinations for live music fans. The fact that it will take place in the great city of San Francisco ensures an unparalleled entertainment experience.

This looks awesome!! Radiohead on a San Francisco summer day is going to be awesome, and I fly back to California from China on august 19th! The OUTSIDE LANDS MUSIC & ARTS FESTIVAL is a great intermission between olympics and burning man. But Jack Johnson?? Who is he and why is he headlining every festival this summer

Not a good closing band?!?! Right, and most of their dates that are on-sale did amazing numbers out of the gate. Charlotte sold 14,000 tickets in one day. I think alot of people like them, huh. Why aren't they a good closer?

WTF, Jack Johnson is not headliner material, an I don't see why he is even cosidered to be a headliner. His shows have no life and lack every enthusiastic quality that a headliner posses. His shows lack momentum and energy, have fun at this one guys. Radiohead rules though.

Jack Johnson may not be the first person I think of a headliner either but don't rip on him like hes got no talent. His music has a good message and his vibe is super positive. The guy makes music from the heart and is one of the most original artists out. To each their own but appreciate the guy for his unique creative style.

props to hippyjessica for starting out the thread with ignorance and intolerance! sarcasm aside, this has potential to be really cool, we'll just have to wait and see what the rest of the lineup looks like. i for one would much rather be in san francisco than michigan for, i think, obvious reasons. i've never seen any of those three headliners (would love to see radiohead though) and i've never been to san fran but i bet the vibe will be amazing, and i bet some of the guys from the dead will be added to the lineup. i just hope the park doesn't get torn apart by rowdy festy-goers. i think jack johnson is popping up everywhere because his new album is selling very well (there's a jambase article on it: almost 400,000 albums sold in the first week), so apparently there ARE people who like his music.

now the question is how much will tickets cost? about radiohead: if they're in san fran august 22-24, and new jersey august 8-9, i bet they finish up their U.S. tour between then. but lollapalooza is august 1-3...hmm. when and where will they play in chicago?

Child molester Mike Gordon? come on... I was there back stage at Jones beach the night this garbage got started and am positive the acusations are false, You are a very ignorant person making referance to such a vial accusation in relation to Jack headlining shows, Mr Jhonson is an increadiably talented artist and increadiable performer but does not have the energy in his shows to "headline" any large festival, although I believe he is on the bill as a headline because he can pull people in to sell tickets?

Its funny how everybody rips on bonnaroo when these are the same headliners that have been there in the past 3 years. And i agree that radiohead should not get a closing set. I want to leave a concert energized not like i just shot up a bunch of H.

I mean how sweet would it be to see 7pm Allman Brothers, The Dead, Widespread Panic or Trey Anastasion Band show. Then goto a latenight set and see a Moe, ALO or Umphrey's McGee play until the wee hours. Head back to camp and sleep. Then chill out in a lawn chair in the afternoon listening to Jack Johnson, Jimmy Buffett or Brett Dennen play. That would be fun for me! Thats the thing Bundis-Dan, my point is, im not saying that jack johnson shouldn't play festies, but having him headline at night on a main stage is a huge mistake. He won't be playing in the afternoon, which he should be. I've seen him live, and playing 20 versions of what sounds like the same song over and over again is not going to capture peoples attention. When you headline a festie, your not playing to just your fans, so you really have to come out and capture peoples interest and I don't see JJ doing that at all. Good luck to him, but I see a disaster here.

Radiohead kills it live! Last time I saw them in B.C., in '01 i think, i left feeling really pumped. Even their slower songs are delivered with such intensity that it is far from a downer. Glad to see them doing extensive US shows. I don't think they played any US dates on that '01 tour.

Muffinman1 - I def agree I can't get into Jack Johnson that much especially for a headliner. And whens The Office returning with new episodes! I need my Dwight and Andy FIX!?!

Bundis Dan - I would love to see a format with those bands at a festival. Like you said...Jack Johnson in the afternoon...So then when night comes around Allman Umphrey's etc...can rock my face off.

Here is my understanding of the headliners and maybe when:

http://blogs.sfweekly.com/shookdown/2008/02/radiohead_to_play_golden_gate.php

2) Timing. The first two dates of the proposed event, Friday Aug. 22 and Sat. Aug. 23 come just a day before Radiohead is rumored to be playing L.A. on 8.24 and 8.25.

and Tom Petty plays Saturday, Aug 23

http://www.highwaycompanions.com/index.php?module=tour

so Jack Johnson ends the festival on a Sunday afternoon. Or I could be completely off...

And if you are planning to visit, I wouldn't count on camping in GGP. I would call friends and reserve space on their floor or book a room just in case.

Are we to believe there only a handful of talented female musicians in the whole country? Could these festival organizers make a bit of an effort to FIND some talented female musicians and feature them? Given that females are 52% of the population, maybe 50% of the acts could be female.

A pathetic attempt at Rothbury? Hippyjess you are a fucking dumbass! Not all festivals are trying to bring on the tweekers like you. Stay home and don't bother showing up. Marcsmalld1, panic and primus are more average than half of the bands on here. Beck, Wilco and Manu Chou are much more muscially talented than either of those bands. Not saying that they play longer solos than those two, but come on dude! Those three bands have been up for grammys, when has primus ever been considered for an award like that? MichaelSavage2008, I can tell that your mind is as closed to music as hippyjess! This is not a competition folks, organizers are trying to spread out festivals in different areas of the country to let all enjoy, not just for the people who don't have jobs and live with their folks or in their car. Killer lineup! Cheers to jambase for being open minded about what type of music that they cover.

I don't get all the bashing. jack Johnson writes good tunes with a good message, they're heartfelt earnest, well constructed singer-songwriter tunes. He's not my ideal pick for a headliner either but I think he's playing with a full band now so hopefully that'll give his songs more live presence. Radiohead is amazing, I saw em at Bonnaroo 06 as a headlining act and it was a definate highlight for the weekend. Primus, panic, beck, wilco, steve muthafunkin winwood, galactic, a bunch of great bay area bands (ALO, hips, devendra banhart), all on a beautiful late summer weekend at Golden Gate Park. I'd go if I had the dough.

Jack johnson does write good songs. its good if you in your teens chilling next to a campfire or a mid afternoon set awaiting the night. But jack is not a person who should close festivals. The last night is supposed to be the the best. The energy, the fun, the dancing and the friendships is what panic brings, phil and friends but not Jack. This lineup is great i would choose this over rothbury if i didnt live 3 hrs away from Bury. have fun plus remember to go see the SF doctor and just say you are having back pains he will hook you up. i love mikemacs comment saying primus is average. well i tell you dont know what the you talkin bout boy. PRIMUS SUCKS!!! seriously, anyone who calls primus average has a slight case of brain damage. and i'm not sure exactly who it was that called them RadioBore, very not clever, also considering they have the smartest and most innovative music (not so much on the improv level but....) STILL. Looks like a decent fest, pretty much similar to rothbury but not as many bands yet. its funny cuz i was just thinking of how friggin awesome it would be if primus and radiohead did a fest together considering they are the greatest 90s bands ever. (i would include RATM in there too but theyre not fest material, but i would still be psyched.)

For some of you new to the forum, you may not be aware that LiberalsForMichaelSavageIn2008 is our little curmudgeon. Basically, any headliner he rips on, but is very kind to no-talents like Jenny Lewis or Amy Weinhouse. He’s always good to call Jambase capitalist pigs too.

Basically, blow off his ridiculous comments and he goes away quick enough. He took a hiatus for a while and I was just thinking that he was wasting his time spreading neo-con hate speech at The Nation or talking up country music on The Source.

Looks like a sweet lineup. Pretty pricey for a no camping festival, actually if there were camping it would still be expensive. I'm sure willing to bet it will be a good time though, Galactic's Crescent City Soul Krewe sounds like it's gonna be hot shit. Pretty weak about Jack Johnson headlining though, just can't see him closing a night of a festival with such a stellar lineup.

I think Jack Johnson is blowing John Butler, who in effect is blowing Michael Franti, who in effect is blowing all the corporations who sponsor his shows (whom he happens to say he dislikes)

$225 for festival tickets and no camping. Deal breaker! $120 a night for hotel rooms. Taxi & Buses will be impossible to get just like the tibetan freedom concert in 1996 where I had to walk back to my SOMA apartment. This line-up just isn't worth that amount of money. Hello single day tickets otherwise, No Thanks!

les claypool doesn't really like the "primus sucks" chant anymore. since i think les and primus are amazing i'm not gonna say it. hopefully this means more primus summer dates (lollapalooza?). otherwise it looks pretty meh for $200+. and for the record i get tired of bitchy people on here claiming to be an authority on what musician is "better" or has "more musical talent." it's called your opinion, not objective fact, thanks.

That's like the Dead saying, "Well, we really don't like people smoking pot at our shows." PRIMUS SUCKS!!!

Well you see Shacka, Jam Bands is not really a genre of music, its more of a category of music that certain bands of genres are placed into due to the fact that they are actually talented and jam. how can you compare umphreys or phish to the grateful dead? you really can't. and you obviously dont know anything about music except your own opinion which i can respect but sometimes you can't deny the talent of certain musicians pal. and you say primus is punk, well how can you compare primus to minor threat or the sex pistols or gbh or the clash or operation ivy, the fact is is primus is a completely original collaboration of crazy talented musicians who are a bit weird but kick more ass than any band.

Hey Brian, did you ask Les himself about that, or did you decide that Les doen't like it anymore. Get real dude, I'm sure it really upsets him and goes home and cries about every night. So you don't say it when you see them, and tell everyone around you to stop, cuz' Les told you is upset. PRIMUS SUCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Not only is LES the greatest bass player ever---but Herb is one of the best drummers in rock history. Not to mention Ler is sick. If those three things make a band shitty than Primus is the worse band ever. They fucking rule.

MichaelSavage,

You are a fucking fool. Wilco and Radiohead are both great bands. You may have heard one or two songs and that is it. Have you ever seen either live? I am sure you haven't because your opinion would be different. Primus fucking sucks. Just because Les is a good bass player doesn't make their band that good. They suck donkey dick, like you.

yes, "primus sucks" is the popular chant, and no i've not asked les personally but from all accounts i understand that he doesn't like that chant anymore which is understandable given that he has a wife and kids who seem to frequently attend his shows. quote from a live recording in response to the chant: "we don't say 'primus sucks' these days. now it's 'i've got a lovely bunch of coconuts'"

also: i love radiohead, but am i the only one who thinks that maybe an American band should 'break in' the first night show ever at golden gate park? it's a shame none of the guys from the dead will be playing there, i figure they deserve the honors!

that is ridiculous to say "first time an artist has played at golden gate park at night". come on ppl: w/ the parks history etc maybe no one in memory has played there at a paid gig at night but hell anyone could have played there, KNOWN artist or not. jerry might have hung out w/ janis drinkin wine w/ pigpen and steve miller and jorma. you don't know. that said: this festie is fantabulous i'm there all three days no matter what come hell or high water. dumpsta, manu chao, wilco, drive by, the coup, devendra, kaki king! hips, galactic w/ hip hoppers, our hometown heroes alo, gallants, rodrigo y gabriela etc etc and more more more. would not miss this fo da world, thanks for covering it jambase and y'all get on their website to sign up for future email updates. for my friends who say it is a rip off? uhhh? at 58 bands over three days it is 5 bucks and change per band (sorry you can't see em all) this is the festie i've been waiting for in da bay. mebe those ppl wouldnt know good music if it came up and bit them in the ass. thanks APE, thanks 'fly and thanx starr king. i'm psyched (+ TIMF in sept and hardly strictly in oct...sf bay area is a good place to be!)

The line-up looks pretty nasty, but some of the headliner decisions are poorly thoughtout... Primarily Jack Johnson! Why the hell would they choose Jack Johnson over Widespread Panic is beyond me?

blower starstarstarstar Tue 4/29/2008 10:13AM

I'm hoping that Jack is the headliner and that Panic will be at a different

stage entirely. That way with any luck only there will be only tens of thousands of people at WSP instead of 80,0000. If that is not the case than it would be a horrible choice of headliner.
