Edge explodes into color…
I've never actually been to a U2 concert. Sure, I've heard them for years on the radio and enjoyed the albums, and even worked with the webmaster of a popular fan-site (www.interference.com ) at one point. Still, while I've had a general appreciation for their craft, I never got up close and personal. That all changed when I went to a screening of U2 3D, a groundbreaking new concert film. It is the first 3D multi-camera live shoot, and let me just say, "WOW!"

The producers, directors and cameramen do a spectacular job putting you right in the action. Like any true fan of the live music experience, there's a natural curiosity about what it would be like to be on the other side of things, performing before adoring throngs that sing along to every tune as you conduct their energies with amps and instruments. U2 3D fulfills that fan-tasy and then some. You'll find yourself trying to dodge the flying water spray and while you squint beneath the spotlights. Bono, The Edge, Adam Clayton and Larry Mullen Jr. literally pop out of the screen as the camera sweeps from the front row, swoops over the drums and lands you directly on stage, staring out at the crowd of tens of thousands of screaming fans. If you've ever wondered what it feels like to be a rock star, this movie is for you.

Filmed in Beunos Aries during the band's 2006 Vertigo tour, U2 3D covers most of their hit numbers over the 80 minute set including "With Or Without You," "Beautiful Day," "Sunday Bloody Sunday," "Where the Streets Have No Name" and "One." Beyond the best, most crisp 3D special effects I've ever seen, it's a straight concert film from start to finish, gliding from song to song and keeping the flow of a typical show throughout. What's especially impressive is how the cameras never intrude on the action, speaking to the careful shot construction and real care behind this project. Neither the crowd or the band seems at all distracted by the filming, which ultimately delivers a very pure live performance of a band still at the top of their game.

Whether you're a hardcore U2 fan or a newbie like me, it will be easy to appreciate the intensity, emotion and message that their concert conveys. This is a band that entertains while also trying to bridge worlds and unite people despite their differences. The extra visual and sonic dimensions added to the experience further connect viewers both with the music and underlying themes at work in this long running band. It truly does feel like you're actually at the show, holding your lighter (or phone) up and clapping along. You'll definitely want to give them a standing ovation at the end. Bravo!

U2 3D is currently playing nationwide in the U.S. at 3D capable cinemas, and just opened on February 22nd in the UK and Ireland

Way to redefine the format of what one considers a "concert review." Even though it's not technically a concert, as Foadser must have been surprised to find, it certainly works outside the boundaries we've usually seen this site utilize, and I got a big kick out of it. well done. Oh and Andy, thanks for founding this website, I'm a bit of a fan!

i am not currently, nor have ever been, a fan of the musical stylings of u2 but (and i can't really believe that i am admitting this) i really want to catch this in theaters. this concept sounds killer. i am a little surprised that no one has previously integrated 3d camera work w/ the concert film format. hopefully, this will only be the first of many of these types of films released by your (and my) favorite bands.

ps- although i'm not a huge fan, i bet a 3d flaming lips film would be pretty damn cool.

Nice AG, nice indeed. I am fan, and am excited to catch this. And I for one am happy to have this site cover such a band/event/coverage. Not mentioned by AG - are those quarky 3D glasses needed to view the movie? And if not, how soon might we expect to see more movies shot in this format? Imagine if a movie such as the upcomming 10,000 BC, or LORT or what ever visually astounding flicks could have been shot in this format? Anyway, glad to have the review. Looking forward to the flick. foadser - go away, and never come back.

Peace.

The glasses are not the typical blue and red-lensed glasses of the past ... they're polarized and actually quite comfortable (and should be fun for some future goof parties!). As for the actual presentation, it was quite fantastic. The effects they were able to reach truly put you on and around the stage and it's a powerful experience. Expect much more in the near-future from this amazing technology and try to check it out in an imax theater if possible!

i am not a u2 fan at all really, but i had some friends of mine who dragged me too it, mainly because i had dragged them to so many shows over the years. That being said, i actually really enjoyed the concert. Its pretty cool to be 2nd row out of 50000 people. They add some cool effects and its the perfect length to where i was just about to start getting bored and it ended.

I'm not a huge U2 fan, but this sounds pretty cool. I wonder if it is possible to release it on dvd. I guess it depends if our tv's can support the 3D. 21mmeris right, Lips in 3d would be awsome.

Does anybody know what happened to that movie tour that was supposed to be video from the last two cheese shows at redrocks. I read something about it a couple months ago and have heard nothing since. That would be one wild movie theatre.

Are you kidding me? U2 is amazing. Sure, a few of their things got poppy, but they are masters. Take a full listen of The Joshua Tree or Boy. You might just change your minds.

I would love to see this film!

Hey dedhed611...Take the might out of the sentence, and since you're not coming back to the site you won't mind me telling you to go shit in your hat! I am not the hugest U2 fan, but I respect the body of work, and honestly who uses the term "squares". What is wrong with a review of a new style of concert movie...I mean it's not like they reviewed Hannah Montana...who by the way is a "Behind the Music" waiting to happen.

for any south park viewers out there, Bono is the world's biggest turd. he pretends to be such a humanitarian, but yet is still such a douch bag. U2 were half way decent about 20 years ago, they've been selling out and sucking ever since.

I think I'll have to go check this out this week. It looks like a very cool idea. I haven't really been a fan of much of what U2 has done in the last 15 years, but The Joshua Tree was one of the best albums of the 80's, Achtung Baby was one of the best albums of the 90's, they also wrote a ton of other great songs in the 80's (Pride, Sunday Bloody Sunday, New Year's Day, I Will Follow, etc...), and they are still a great live band.

Exactly. I feel the same. I really don't appreciate much of their efforts past Achtung Baby, but come on. U2 Sucks?!?! Hardly. This has been one of the most successful bands in all of music history. Their music was at one time considered rebelious, alternative, even ground breaking. I don't think some of their current stuff is as interesting or good as their music from the 70s, 80s and 90s, but they have had a long history. The band is in their late 40s for Christsake, how edgy do you expect them to be? I think there are a lot of people that dislike this band because they weren't around in their heyday and never experienced those times. Some of us were and this was the band to see. If I were to judge this band on their last couple of releases, I would say they weren't that spectacular. However, Boy, War, Joshua Tree and Achtung Baby are listed as 4 of the best albums of all time. U2 sucks?!?! What are you listening to?

dedhed6111, dude,... no reason hear to do any crapping in anyone's hat. You've done a stand up job yourself. Before you become so critical of a band, might I suggest you clean up your profile so as not appear like a flaming pooftah. Big in Japan? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mXPUkrz7Uow

...but no respect for U2. How could you respect yourself and listen to BiJ? I'm sorry, but you might also want to change your moniker as well. I think you use dedhed to appear cool. Based on some of your musical tastes, I actually doubt you've ever seen them. You my friend are a self righteous farce. Take BiJ off your list and maybe even Bad Religion and THEN I will listen to your gripes about U2..... Lake Trout.... Jeesus, what else?!?!

Always wondered what "arena rock" meant until I saw U2. I would recommend this even for the casual U2 fan (like myself). Amazing footage. My only complaint was that IMAX didn't rip out the seats in the theater and give the soundtrack a 20dB boost.

dedhed6111 -- it'd be nice if you didn't speak for the community, unless you've actually spoken to a majority of the people on the website. If you check out U2's profile on JamBase they certainly have plenty of fans on the website. Feel free to voice your opinion, but it seems silly for you to believe you know what the rest of the community thinks. Thanks for not speaking for me.

dedhed - don't forget to stop the flame war before you start it... let's see, "square," "fucking idiot", "douchebag"....yep, not throwing out insults here. In addition, I am far from young, I am in my forties. I've been to quite a lot of GD shows and I really think you should get rid of your moniker. 1. Because you are NOTHING like a Grateful Dead fan with your childish rantings and hate filled vitriol and 2. a true Grateful Dead fan would never lambaste the efforts of another band that has had as much influence on music history as U2. So please, go back to your electronica stuff and stay off of the discussion boards about music that you don't care about.

That would be the MATURE thing to do.

You don't see me heading over to the boards of the bands you like and telling you how much crap they are. It is only when YOU decide to judge others that you are in turn judged.

Looks like most on this board and site disagree with you. I am by no means a huge U2 fan and I would suspect that the many of us that are on this site regardless of what we like have an even lesser opinion of you. So it is you I invite to run along and find another venue for your teenage opinionated angst.

I'm guessing that if GD, phish or moe. had done a 3D movie and a review was on this site most of the people getting their undies in a bunch would be "woohooing" all the way to the theater multiple times. Get a grip people, this is a website about live music. The review is on a movie made of a live concert. I see large national acts on this site that I personally wouldn't go see if it were a free show in walking distance from my house. I just don't bother checking it out. What an amazing bunch of blowhards.
