Yes Yes, dropping the fresh vibes for Brooklyn and beyond, the boys of Actual Proof debuted a bunch of new tunes to a packed house on Friday at Galapagos (North 6th Street, Brooklyn). Exploring the ever-expanding universe through a unique pathway of sound, the Proof carries you through cosmic transcendence of mind and body. Messages of positivity, elevation and love echo within while the soundscape surrounds you, blanketing your soul. On this night, the Proof brought it all.
As a part of Frequency, an exploration into the realms of drum n bass, breakbeats and beyond, the Proof, along with good friend and fellow sonic superman DJ Seishi, gave a little harmonic hedonism to the heads at Galapagos who had come from all over to hear it drop. After Seishi’s dynamic set, which at any time can blend Grover Washington, Jr. with some Kreudder and Dorfmeister, the Proof boys took the stage, opening with four new tracks: Scattered Thoughts, Mic Check, Sonic Lullaby, and Collision. Each tune uniquely invoked drum n bass rhythms, incorporating deep breaks while bringing the head bop to the room. Fan favorites Emotional Rescue, Lifted, Grounded and Flash of Light, all of which can be found on the Proof’s brilliant self-titled album, caught some smiles on the faces of the old school Proof heads. The final cut of the night, Awakening, was like nothing else in the set. This tune felt like that intelligent, tasteful, MJ-esque funk outta the early 80s with its straight-ahead dance groove and ill backbeat anchored by drummer Joe Tomino. As always, the vibrant melodies of the vocally majestic Mark Holmes soared above the clouds. The core rhythm section of Mark's brother Dave on six-string and birthday boy Stu Brooks, who held it down proper. The ambiance of Dave’s picking styles and his touch perfectly compliments the low-low end of Stu, and these boys always have the sync thing down. Traveling light years beyond in sound, the Proof experience is growing.
The lack of a cabaret license kept most bodies in the seats at Galapagos. “Moving bodies are good” was the response from Mark, a man who thrives off of the crowd, and vice-versa. One best be making plans to check out the next Proof show, and make certain that it’s motion is permitted (this is some insurance deal I will never understand) because the tenacious power of the Proof may get your ass in trouble.
Members of Actual Proof and their friends have also been doing some things around NYC at the Lansky Lounge and other spots deep in the Village scene. Be attentive and aware of what is being created around you. Don’t sleep on these cats.
