Lenny Kravitz :: 01.29.08 :: Electric Factory :: Philadelphia, PA

Lenny Kravitz :: 01.28 :: Philly
We're listening to "Fields of Joy" from Lenny Kravitz's 1991 classic Mama Said. It's Tuesday night and we're driving to Philadelphia in the rain. With Kravitz's voice floating over pounding rhythms and rubbing-up against grinding guitars, we drive into a retro-rock kaleidoscope as he sings, "Just you and I/ Our trouble slowly fades away."

A purple bus is parked outside the Electric Factory with Kravitz's unmistakable portrait on the side. He's wearing his obligatory sunglasses and the words "Love Revolution" are emblazoned on the back. On a nine city tour that started in mid-January, this bus is cruising towards its final stop in New York. Contest winners in each city along the way hop on the "Get On The Bus Tour," which allows them to ride on the bus to the last show.

Crowds of people are waiting in line to go through security so they can catch a glimpse of the rock star. Once inside, a catwalk housing the spotlights over the main floor is elevated. A sold out crowd crushes toward the stage as the house lights dim. The love is growing. The Revolution has begun! The stage is dark. Suddenly bright yellow lights silhouette the band members as they walk to their respective spots onstage. A cheer erupts as Kravitz arrives.

He glides across the stage like a proud peacock. Get ready, rock steady! The bass guitar pulses through massive speakers. Our hearts pound. Opener, "Bring It On" features a wicked sax solo. As they go into "Dig In!" Kravitz and his band do just that with a quick tempo change and sharp guitar work. Franklin Vanderbilt lays down a funky beat that syncs up with the two-piece horn section that powers the colorful chorus of "What the fuck are we saying?"

Lenny Kravitz :: 01.28 :: Philly
The 44-year-old singer-songwriter-guitarist-producer teaches the crowd the chorus to the title track from his new CD, Love Revolution, so they can sing along. It goes, "It's time for a love revolution/ It's time for a new constitution!" He says, "We are the last generation that can make a meaningful change in the world!"

Somebody yells, "It's his birthday." With that, Kravitz invites a child to join him onstage. As they talk, he asks the boy named Anthony, "What do we need to do to solve the problems of the world?" Anthony replies, "Respect yourself and others." Kravitz is taken aback by the boy's simple answer. Anthony is 12-years-old. Kravitz tells us, "Look inside yourself and decide to change the planet."

He picks up his signature Flying V guitar and soars as the band bangs out a raucous version of The Guess Who's "American Woman." The guitar licks that come crashing down are repeatedly picked up again when we "Fly Away" with distortion and wah-wah reminiscent of Hendrix. We all sing together with the echoing effect of the amps, in the colored tones of stage lights and smoke effects. We find ourselves gently placed in the set closer "Let Love Rule."

With a church organ groove, rich cymbals crashing and the horns wailing, Kravitz walks through the Philly crowd, trailed by security, so he can greet the fans personally. He is lifted up by fans as the balcony screams. The bass rattles the old building's window frames, and the show concludes with infectious rocker "Are You Gonna Go My Way?"

Join the revolution, make some noise!

Wow, it's gonna be REALLY funny to watch all the jammers start hatin' on THIS one. Let's see if I can call a few things:

1) "Jambase is gown down the tubes,"

2) "Garth Brooks,"

3) "Let's see some more of (insert artist here),"

4) "(This artist) used to be good, before they were on MTV,"

5) "Watch Bonnaroo get him next year."

Etc.

-Did I miss anything? Yup, probably. Go ahead, fill in the gaps, negativo's..

Sorry orgwell, but no hating from this "jammer". I would love to see Lenny at Bonnaroo or any other festival. He has always put out quality stuff, Karl Denson played sax on Let Love Rule. Now Kanye West I could do without.

agreed orgwell. i like the fact that the folks at jambase are becoming more "diverse" with their articles. music shouldn't be about boundaries or genres or which band is "cool" or "too mainstream". I like jambase because it focuses on bands that are amazing in a live concert setting or have great musicianship that should not be missed.

UGH! Lenny Kravitz is garbage. Arrogant, talentless, and a total douche. Who is still going to see this clown? Saw him open for the Rolling Stones on the Voodoo Lounge tour, and he berated the soundman during his entire set! What an asswipe. He was practically booed off stage.

I saw Lenny sit in with KDTU several years ago at a Jazz Fest late night show at Tip's. The man has absolutely no groove. Douche-nozzle? I like that. May I use it to describe Lenny as well?

Personally, I can't stand lenny crapitz. He has MAYBE 1 ok song that I've heard and that was 1990 or so. He seems like an egotistical, fashion madel wannabe.

I'm coming out the closet. I used to like Lenny, I used to huff gas too so I guess that doesn't count for much. Anyway, I had foggy recollections of Mama Said being a great album, one night, in defense of Lenny, I played it for my hater indie rock girlfriend to prove it wasn't all bad, I realized I was wrong, she left me, I'm over it. Kudos on the "douche nozzle", feel free to use the term whore-lock if you ever get a chance. All those pop divas helped me coin that phrase.

Mama Said has some moments, but much like Sampson, Lenny cut his hair and got weak

How come Lenny isn't a headliner a B-Roo? He would fit in perfectly with the rest of that bullshit lineup. Thanks for covering something that 99% of this website's traffic doesn't give a shit about. Home come we have heard nothing about the Umphreys tour coming up? That is something to talk about. Fuck this crap.

Was Ricky Williams in attendence? I've always been able to groove to some of his stuff, but that song "Lady," could be one of the worst of all time.

ummm...have any of you guys personally met mr kravtiz. i dont suppose you have, and to base a view of him as a person because you dont like his music or he was mad at the sound man is insane. Im sure all the beloved jammers have never said anything rude to anyone. If we want to assume things ill go right ahead an assume that most jam bands are just to stoned to realize there sound is off. Or what about hearing that bob weir is a dick..o no not bob we know him personally. you know its funny that people judge a person based on music...music is beautiful but people like to ruin for others by bashing things they know very little of...wait wheres all the haters bands that come on here and say people suck..if you dont like him fine feel free to say but to make judgements on a mans personality based on his music of saying something "mean" is just childs play...goodnight yall..find love not hate

The posters here are embarrassing. We have been covering Lenny for years. Lenny at Fest with Karl was phenomenal. His catalog speaks for itself.

Douche-nozzle?? How old are we in here? Why dont we play dodge ball while we are at it?

Sure Lenny has not been churnin out the classic jams like albums 1-4, but live he is still dope.

First the hip hop flame bs, now this.

You guys should head back to your New Monsoon/Tea Leaf Spleen garbage.

Wizzeak?? My guess is most of you guys are white and cant dance, and wouldnt know 'groove' if it fucked your girlfriend.

STEG187 - You sound like you have the musical sophistication of a three your old. Clearly you've bought into his shtick and performance, hook line and sinker.... the rest of us are actually listening. Lenny has talent, he can play guitar and the drums, but he is not master of either instrument. His guitar is used far more as a prop than it is an instrument. ...and whereas you saw the JF show at the Fairgrounds with Karl and yes, it was entertaining, the late night show at Tips revealed his true musical "talent". Many of know what a groove is, we've seen it fuck your girlfriend. Lenny my good friend doesn't not have it.

Come on Steg, the term Douche-nozzle is hilarious and I would be more than happy to go play some dodge ball with anyone who is interested. Part of me wants to say that people are going over the top ripping on him but at the same time I'm trying to think of any Lenny Kravitz music I like and coming up blank. To sum it up:

Lenny Kravitz sucks, dodgeball is amazing and the best thing to come out of this posting is the term doche-nozzle.

STEG187, it is you who are embarressing. The fact that use the term "Classic Jams" is embarressing. That you used that term in reference to Lenny Kravitz is even more embarressing. You've been covering Lenny for years? Who cares? And who is the "we" in your statement? Are you a writer for this site, coming to yell at your readers? Good call, ace! That's a brilliant manner for a staff writer to act! Lenny's heyday was indeed years ago.... I had completely forgotten about him, and apparently, most of your readers as well. But not you! You've found the "Groove!" Catch any Collective Soul shows recently?
