That line-up looks fantastic! Its very well-balanced and full of quality, pertinent to the assortment of genres scheduled to perform.

Levon Helm!! A festival play!?!? Pretty f'n sweet, that will be a treat! Wish I could make it to this event.

I can almost guarantee the warren is gunna play with levon and that is going to be the single best song or set(hopefully set) of the whole festival. As for the rest of the line up i couldnt ask for much more from a festival in the northeast cant wait to go. Also the fact that it is the weekend after delfest makes it even better

moecheese.... u need to get out more bud... I used to think like you... Bottom line is the mule tears it up. The bass is heavy thumpin all times, and warren rips it up like a mad man. On top they bust out the sickest covers of all time! Last yrs mnt jam where they did no quarter! SICK there almost reggae version of love me do! SICK Thats what love will make you do with Jake Cinninger! SICK... Not to mention their songs are pretty damn good as well..

This line up rocks, and im psyched that they havnt started getting crappy bands like all these other festivals that were once good and now suck...

I have been to every Mnt jam so far, only 2 before this one... and they have all rocked! Keep it up warren...

Hopefully this year will not be as big as last year, once they signed on phil, the audience grew 10 fold. Either way it will be an amazing time.

Breadloaf, MJ is a great fest. Jus tbe wary of the rain, which is just about guaranteed. The great thing about it is that it's set up at the base of the ski slope and the lodge is open all day and night. I agree, the music is there without the crappy hype. Warren's good like that.

sj42286 - i've got some shirts and shoes that saw their official demise due to the clay-like mud that hunter was spewing everywhere last year. as you said, though, well worth the rain - especially for that phil show. that was something special.

I didn't know warren produced greasy dirtball music. Sounds more like rock to me. I hadn't listened to his new album though. I'd say mule's style of rock (when there were three)was dirty and mean. Maybe I just don't like the way you phrase "southern greasy dirtball". Sounds almost derogatory. Now that mule has another seat their music has taken a new and brighter tone. Danny adds alot of sound to the mix and I like the way it's evolved. To each their own, I like the Crowes but how is that any non-greasy or undirtballish than Woody era mule?

This may be the greatest festival line-up seen in a long time. I'm not the biggest Mule fan but Warren is amazing. Levon Helm is one of the greatest musicians of all time and I can't wait to see him. Also, Spearhead will kick ass as always, but the number one out of this line up (behind Levon Helm) is Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings. they had a great lineup last year, but this, not only on paper, is a stellar cast of variety.

all the jam genres are represented very well.

Ive been to 2 out of the last 3, how they have fun the late night the last two years is that only people with camping passes can go to the late night, but its free if u have the camping. This year will be differnt with two late night stages, with dark Star & Galactic playing outside (pray for no rain) and Lotus & Pnuma Trio playing inside. actually jackstraw1984 i dont think anything can top the 2000(with 2002 then followed by 2001 being next imo) christmas jam.

then again i was there so im biased. and it was in thomas wolfe memorial auditorium in the same building as the ACC(the second year) but a room which is WAY better(sound and atmosphere) than the Civic Center, imo.

and me personally i wish warren would do a christmas in july thing and have it outdoors in a bigger place. maybe somewhere like deerfields or somewhere else. but i dont think that that is realistic for two reasons.

one warrens busiest touring season is in the summer. too much other stuff going on.

two if it was done in late july as a christmas in july thing then its to close to the bele chere festival which is always the last weekend in july and is HUGE.

Personally I'm dissapointed to see that they added Bob Weir and Ratdog. I mean i love grateful dead as much as the next guy but I think weir and ratdog can get boring and they always take up 3+ hours of prime time at all the major jam festivals. I wouldn't mind seeing these time slots going to a more exciting act.

Bobby and Phil need to remember that they owe it all to the Fat Man. If you disagree, then look only to the venues they fill (or not)…not that I ever wanted TGD to become a stadium band. Unfortunately, Boob and Phil are still riding the coattails of a man who passed more than a decade ago. I don’t want anyone to think that I don’t respect Bob’s ability to play rhythm or Phil’s virtuosity on bass, but the end result of the current line ups is dissatisfying at best and disrespectful at times.

It was heartbreaking for all of us to see Jerry off, but what P&F, The Dead, or Rat DooDoo accomplish is humiliating to the original experience. Do not destroy your legacy. Stop touring and enjoy life. Allow the genre that you created to continue to develop as dynamically as you once did with the guidance of a virtuoso with a gift.

I realize this pisses off newbies and even some real heads; however, it’s true. Anyone who ever saw the Fat Man knows it. There are an enormous variety of bands to see within this genre now. Bob and Phil need to hang it up and give props to the guys who are creating new material and extending the boundaries of this whole scene. Simply put, Bobby’s jazz cover band and Phil and Whoever need to stop taking up hours of these festivals so that real artists can have their time. Honestly, I would say that some of Phil’s Phriends are more in tune with the scene now than he is. His noodling and unbelievable setlists are really not that impressive from what I’ve seen of them. I saw TGD nearly a hundred times with the Fat Man at almost every venue and holiday played. I’ve also seen the bands that I speak of now innumerable times for I don’t know what reason. It’s just not got the magic anymore. The good news is that sense of wonderment is still available. I’m not much into the jamgrass, but UM, TDB, STS9, Pnuma, Lotus, Soulive, and many others are worth your touring dollars.

There’s too much jamgrass, jamtronica, jammetal, and jamjazz to waste your touring time on what once was and never will be again. Remember, there’s nothing you can hold for very long…

Thank you, Jerry. You still have my heart, and we all truly miss you.

Oh and BTW, if you want to see someone fake it other than your girlfriend, go see DSO. They actually do a much better job than Booby and Phil are currently.

Pranaam my sisters and brothers.

pheelalrights, i totally agree with you. Someone had to say it. I'm not a huge ratdog fan and every phil show ive gone to has been for his friends (Trey, Kimock, warren, herring ect..) He does have some talented friends. But its time to get over the whole GD scene and give some other deserving bands a chance.

1st of all pheelalrights, you already wrote that big ass comment on the summercamp article, where it was irrelevant and unnecessary. at least here is has something to do with the subject matter.

2nd of all, some of us young noobie bitches weren't able to take ourselves to see the dead when Jerry Garcia(who i doubt would appreciate you calling him the fat man) was still alive.

So you think that I don't deserve the right to go see phil or that phil doesn't have the right to play for me?

that's not very heady of somebody who claims to have been to so many dead shows, man.

Sorry about the Summer Camp thing, man. I thought I was writing about the over blown coverage of bands that are played out, i.e. RatDog, P&F, and The Dead.

I certainly don't object to newbies. Hell, their girlfriends all like guys like me...I have money, a job, a nice house, all the things that I didn't when I was a newbie. Oh wait, I still managed quite well then, too. I'm just fucking with you, friend. I'm married. I have a new born son and my wife unfortunately has stage iv cancer. These boards allow me to project my anger with life. You should enjoy yourself, as someone once wrote. Additionally, the Fat Man knew he was the Fat Man. That's the only part that you don't get, which BTW is demonstrative of your age. Let me give you some advice. Don't call yourself a bitch or we'll treat you like one. Additionally, when you do think of making comments like that, keep your mouth shut and allow us to think you’re a stupid punk, don't open and confirm it for those of us who have been a constant in this scene for decades.

Peace brother.

pheelalrights - I agree with a lot of your assessments. I have been to many a NOLA Jazz Fest where Rat Dung could not even sell out the Howlin' Wolf, but KDTU, SuperJams and many more were sold out in a matter of hours. THAT spoke volumes. In addition, isn't it ever interesting how EASILY Rat Ding is booked on almost EVERY festival.... I'd say getting Phil and Phriends is a tad more difficult and overall a better show, but still are we REALLY seeing that much that is new from either one? Even when Rat Dingus is playing, the crowd hoots and hollers far more for an old Dead tune than they ever will for a Weird original with the Dat Rug.

I cant wait for mountain jam but weir & ratdog are sort of a bummer addition...they play for far too long and for some reason their band name is getting top billing, even on the mountain jam site, over Mule. I would have preferred the Allmans, fresh from their 21 night (:-o) run at the Beacon.

Dr. Dog is the shit. They are one of the best bands out there right now. Thier live shows are phenomenal. I agree with moecheeseplease with him saying that Govt Mule is pretty lame. Warren Haynes is a sick guitar player but Mule is over hyped. I am so fuckin sick of soulshine and they should oust it from the roster. Spearheads soulshine is much better. Also, I agree with how this should be Levon Helms festival. He should have a better spot than Bobby or Warren. Granted I know that this is more or less Warrens thing but he should respect that Levon is one of the best musicians of our time.

I can see both sides to this current thread; pheel, while you make no points for tact (I'm very sorry 'bout your wife), I do happen to agree with your opinion that Bob and Phil are not adding to the legacy. No hate, here, but they do not inspire me personally; I have simply come to the realization that Jerry meant much more to my Dead experience than I ever knew back then. Perhaps like you, I am happy to leave my many Dead memories intact and cherished, and embrace some new bands instead. However- if I WAS a newbie, I would at least want to see/experience parts of the Dead, if I could not see the sum- wouldn't you? Phil does have a knack for attracting some damned good company, and it is certainly his (and Weir's, etc.) prerogative to do so within the context of the Dead library. Just not my cup of tea. We can't choose our birth, our time- We were ALL newbies once! I got to see Jerry a ton, but never saw Jimi; got to speak with Stevie Ray, but sadly missed Lowell George. I find the "newbies" I run into at shows quite cool; more often then not, I get shown serious respect and generosity. More than once someone has gone out of his or her (graceful, lovely) way to turn me on simply because they can see that I've been around the scene and might have something interesting to share. I remember being in awe of some of the wonderfully weathered couples with their endless gray braids when I first stumbled into this crazy life of music, art, and community. We are virtual ambassadors for Jerry's legacy. I sometimes think that if Jerry was alive today, he would have finally extricated himself from the long tentacles of the bloated GD payroll and endless parade of hangers-on, and forged ahead in some new and exciting direction- or devoted his energies to the vast library of traditional music he loved and so graciously shared with us. Thanks for listening, and I look forward to my many meetings with kind folks. You keep me young!

I never experienced the Dead, as i was in HS when Jerry passed on. But i have had no urge since then to see anything associated with them - Other Ones, The Dead, Ratdog, Phil, etc. I missed it and I feel that I would have rather experienced the whole rather than the parts. To a certain extent, it's the same with the Phish members. I don't want to go to a Trey/Page/Fish/Gordo show and see them perform Phish songs. That being said, from what I have read over the years, Ratdog is just not headlining material and it kinda bummed me out when I saw that they would close the weekend. But i'll give them a chance and form my own opinion. I'm psyched for the rest of the lineup to see some old favs - MSMW, Mule, UM, Galactic, DBT - and some new - Dr. Dog, Helm, Potter, MOFRO. Regardless, I'll enjoy the weekend. The lineup is excellent.

Bobert...Douche, now that's original. How old are you, ten? Apparently, your lexicon doesn't extend beyond what's under your mother's sink.

Love ya, brother.

Breadloaf,

I see your point. I guess I would want to see the parts even though I couldn't see the whole. I just don't want these kids thinking that what is now available to them is even remotely like what once was. It makes me sad.

i think breadloaf made a good point...im a newb and i always like chilling with the older deadheads at ratdog/p+f shows. I do show them respect and like hearing their stories. I know its not the same as the gd but wen bobby and phil stop touring ill b glad i saw them as much as i did. Im just waiting for my band to come around. As for this festi, the ratdog show will be dope but im more excited for um

moethug, it is funny that you say "I'm just waiting for my band to come around," because I had been thinking about just that. Of the current crop, will one rise to the top, or is one out there and not being heard yet? Is the next great jam band in junior high school, bored and doodling cartoons? There are of course many of you not only far too young to have seen the Dead (the real Dead- pheelalrights is telling the truth- there is nothing like Jerry, regardless of the very high quality and cool players like Kimock, Herring, Haynes, etc.) but perhaps even never seen Phish. Bummer! I thought maybe STS9 might be your generations legends, although I personally like their earlier, more hippy sounding gigs- but I have met many cool young folks at their shows. As far as the youth movement goes, I would say that Ryan Adams is a hell of a good songwriter. Maybe YOU are your band!

STS9 is one of my personal favorites too; however, I don't think they have the natural (computers) sound that most people desire. I think TDB are a possibility too. My guess would be that UM will fill a larger role in years to come because of their natural (no computers) sound and relatively meaningful lyrics. This is just my humble opinion. I've seen most of what's out there, and this is as good a guess as I can muster.

Peace my sisters and brothers.

Pheelalrights,

You seem to live in my backyard while looking at your calender of shows. I respect your opinion and agree 100% on GD material. I believe that they should hang up their instruments. My brother and his friends use to see the GDGD numerous times and they were nice enough to dub tapes for me because my folks wouldn't allow me to go b/c I was still in high school. Rightfully so on their part for not allowing me to get into that scene at such a young age. I would not consider myself a "newbie" unless you consider someone who hasn't seen the GD live. I just think that you should go on hateful rants (although I do tend to agree with you with your first thread on this subject as well as your Summercamp rant) towards other peoples opinions because of your wifes sickness. It is a horrible disease and my friends mother is dealing with it right now. That being said I don't think that this is the place for you to vent.

Anyone who thinks Phil should hang it up is retarded. Phil helped create the Grateful Dead just as much as Jerry did. Just the fact Jerry was the spirtual leader of the band doesn't change the fact that it's all of their legacy. Saying that the rest of them should not continue doing what they have done their entire lives is stupid. If you don't like them, stay home.
