RETURNS WITH NEW ALBUM AND TOUR

Toumani Diabaté

The master of the kora returns to U.S. on January 24 for the Symmetric Orchestra tour. His new album, The Mandé Variations, will be released by World Circuit/Nonesuch on February 26. It is his first release to concentrate on solo kora pieces since 1988's Kaira. The Symmetric Orchestra will feature players from Senegal, Burkina Faso and elsewhere in Africa, playing both traditional and electric instruments.

I will definitely be at the Portland show. This guy is incredible. I strongly recommend that anyone at all interested in African music go out and get the album In the Heart of the Moon where he duets with Ali Farka Toure. It is absolutely gorgeous and technically astounding music.

i agree with jackstraw4! i'll be at the URI performance, and you should be to if you're within driving distance because the show is FREE and open to the public. it's being put on as part of 'pangaea' the URI roots music series.
