Neil Young: Chrome Dreams II

This is like a real nice Neil Young mix tape. There's a little Crazy Horse electric turbulence, a splash of This Note's For You style, a folksy nod or two and a whole bunch of VERY earnest entreaties for kindness and compassion in our befuddled modern age. However, there's absolutely nothing on Chrome Dreams II (Reprise) that's gonna displace any of the fixtures in Young's catalog. The title refers to Young's unreleased (though widely bootlegged) 1977 album that similarly wavered between home and conflict, hope and unrest. The rub is there's nothing here that feels especially essential. "Boxcar" is a fine banjo-driven ghost blues, and it's wonderful to hear Young hurt his guitar on "Spirit Road." The celebration of the common folk's power on "Ordinary People" seems a little hollow coming from a cat who's been ugly rich for more than 30 years. Plus, it has an '80s keyboard sting I swear hasn't been used since Dire Straits' Making Movies. Like much of Neil's recent work, Chrome Dreams II often strives way too hard for significance and the lyrics are sometimes a bit clunky and cliché driven. He's best here on the garage band throwaway "Dirty Old Man," where a bunch of, well, dirty old men play dirty old rock 'n' roll. Hey, none of this diminishes what a genuinely nice listen this is. Just don't be surprised if after a few spins you don't reach for After The Gold Rush or On The Beach instead when you get a Neil itch.

there are two longs songs on this album. one is 18 minutes.

the other NO HIDDEN PATH, is 14 minutes, and its the old school killer jam you know and love from Neil. Its amazing!!!

This article makes no mention of these GEMS on this album.

The tunes mentioned are really the ones that are the least remarkable.

no offense to anyone. peace out.

i disagree, i feel that with repeated listens this album is really standing out as a great one...

Sure, Ordinary People seems a bit out of place, he wrote this back in the 80s and used to play it on the Blue Notes tour. It may even have been recorded back then, not sure about that. And maybe it does not need to be 18 minutes long, but I do not get bored at all listening to it.

Neil fans, casual and hardcore should all dig this album.

Pardon me Mr Cook but your license to review music should be REVOKED!!!

Another Classic Gem in the constantly growing catalog of one of the greatest artists of the last century...

Thank you Neil once again for making more beautiful music in every way!

"Ordinary People" is the 18 minute track, so it was mentioned, and I thought both it and "No Hidden Path" would have been way more interesting if they were half the length. Just because something is long doesn't make it epic or substantive. I love Neil Young, just didn't love this record. Sometimes it's okay just to like something even by a musical cornerstone.

aside from Mirrorball has this has been put anything good since the 70's? Answer: no.....anyone heard that Live at Massey Hall cd? One of the worst live performances I've ever heard, well next to UM live shows that is.

Freedom, Harvest Moon, Greendale, Prairie Wind, Living With War - all quality releases that neil has released in the past 20 years. I feel sorry for you that you didn't enjoy Live at Massey Hall because that is a great listen. as for Chrome Dreams II, i think this review sums it up pretty well, not terrible but not all that memorable. Really enjoy "Dirty Old Man" and "No Hidden Path"

In addition to what zumakiller mentioned, Silver and Gold, and Are You Passionate? are beautiful records also. Everything he puts out is high quality. Chrome Dreams II is an excellent record. The only Neil record I could pass on would be Trans.
