Donna Jean & the Tricksters
"All good things in all good time" is a good line because it's true; Donna Jean & the Tricksters is majestic proof. After forty years in music, with partners who've been at it more than 20 years themselves, Donna Jean's musical odyssey has come full circle to create her finest work.

The self-titled CD will be out January 29, distributed by Dig (part of the Rykodisc network) to all your better emporia (stores, for you non-Latinists).

Donna Jean Thatcher always sang; it was convenient that one of America's pivotal studios, Muscle Shoals Sound, was just down the street. Still in her cheerleader uniform, she became a member of its working backup group, and was part of legendary songs like Elvis Presley's "Suspicious Minds" and Percy Sledge's "When Aw Man Loves a Woman."

Donna Jean and the Tricksters unites a host of Dead alumni on their new release. Donna Jean Godchaux-MacKay fronts a roots-rockin' band that features seven-part harmonies and top-shelf musicianship. The band's incendiary live shows are generating rave reviews and continue to build their rabid fan base while reaching out to a whole new, younger demographic. The new album also features beautiful packaging and design by famed poster artist, Gary Houston.

Donna Jean and the Tricksters Track List

I wish this woman had a mute button on her.

i tend to agree with ya there roberto, but if she didnt bother Jerry after a show we never woulda had Keith.

Rough croud - but tough to argue. Donna goes down with Yoko and Linda McCartney as another "cool chick" who totally lacks tallent.

As for Keith - meh. There could have been a thousand other guys to pound out cords on the keys.

I have to agree w/everyone about Donna Jean. I always wondered why they would split their money between more people when she sang on a couple songs a night and to be honest the songs would have been just as good w/o her. Let the "it's not about the money" postings begin...

no, it's not about the money, it's about "tallent"-less hack jambase posters. Let the woman sing. If she's still truckin at her age more power to her.

yeah, you do have a point kirkbrew about keith, in the later years. but you gotta admit the man really killed it for his first few years. definitely some inspired playing before he got all junked out

Everyone here has a right to their personal opinions, so heres mine for what its worth...Its without a doubt, most of you haven't heard this band "Live" on stage yet. They are freak'n awsome, and I'm 100% sure that Jerry Garcia himself, would agree! What a shame some of you posting comments like "mute button on her", "douchebag donna and the shitsters", "I have to agree w/everyone about Donna Jean". I'm sure these negative comments are coming mostly from people who are not kind, holding empty hearts, and shallow minds.

Dude, I love "Sunrise" and "France" is a frickin jam. Whatever Sundog. Call a spade a spade. And you shouldn't judge others either. I'm Kind, Vegan and I'm 1 for 3, 2 for 5!

I have seen over 125 shows, now I know in some circles that's a bit slim but, I still wish I knew how to delete her. Please, if you really think she has talent you are NUTZ!

at her best she was tolerable. at her worst, fast forward...

i loved keith, but did i really need a tortured banshee wail during the instrumental jam of 'playin'? the answer is no...

Come on, this artical above is NOT about Donna's past singing, its about the here and now. I was at the Grateful Garcia Gathering last summer when the band jammed on stage, and it was clear that this band ROCKS! All those folks there loved the bands performence. So can we move on? The statment below is a FACT!

"The band's incendiary live shows are generating rave reviews and continue to build their rabid fan base while reaching out to a whole new, younger demographic".

Whoa! I suggest you go hear Donna Jean & the Tricksters before you cast stones. The woman is sounding better than ever and is a huge talent, as are her fellow musicians in the band. I have heard the album and it is fantastic. And I have heard the live band and they are an incredibly great jamming, rocking, R&Bing, soulful group!

Donna Jean & the Tricksters are a great band live and you should check them out if you haven't, but I have to agree with a lot of you in saying she did alter some of the Deads great songs, and she altered them in a bad way. She screamed and howled out of harmony with the dead on a lot of their jams, she should have just came out for dancin in the streets. and Keith was an awesome keyboardist to say the least, but in my opinion Mydlands the true soldier who helpe rekindle some of the fire that was starting to burn out. Donna also caused some contreversy with the group because of her little affair with bobby, the dead didn't need a woman singer at all, but her band is pretty solid

"Incendiary"....Sundog - Wasn't that the word that the kid from "Almost Famous" used when he was trying to sneak into the San Diego Sports Arena when he was talking to the fellows from Stillwater on the loading docks back stage?

while i havent seen the tricksters, i have seen donna come out with zero and dark star a couple of times, and honestly, i think her trademark wails are non-existent now because of her voice being weathered over time... with that being said, it has a more earthy quality to it, not as over the top, and pretty natural sounding now, i can get next to it... and while she did ruin some great moments in some even greater songs, when that wail was on point during the playin reprise, it hit hard... just my 2

going to see phil or bobby would be more like my style.

I have seen the ZT lots of times and the last double live was really pretty darn cool!! and it was a rex benefit. If u never heard ZT with DJG, then get the last double live for REX. Its the best I have ever heard the ZT.

Nice festival Sundog, hey Bro glad you moved it to the old Buckeye man, hey though last summer at NelsonLedgesQuarryPark FRI 7/6 I was there mainly to catch my main man SK for some ZERO action, but prior to catchin' SK Melvin's JGB laid it down, Melvin was on fire that day both with his band and with Zero, but Donna & The Tricksters played in between the two and they really impressed me, I don't go to as many festivals as I did when I was still a crazy youngster on later day GD lot with my whole life ahead of me, but I try to go see bands with no presumptions of "IT" happening and I have found that goin' in expectin' the worst but hoping for the best really does make many shows much more bearable if not uplifting and sometimes (still)inspirational. Donna was really nice as usual when I was talkin' to her B4 Zero, right after her set while SK was pledging up his guitars as he always does preshow, and she was kind enough to give me a promo copy of whatever album they are about to release and get it signed by the ZenTricksters as well. This was at Gr8fulFest #8, I just went Friday & Saturday though and like I said man you know as well as I do that if you go into a show with an openmind and no presumptions you are gonna be more likely to be impressed rather than let down by any thing that you "expected." I don't do DSO, but on Friday I caught not only Zero which was really why I was there but like I said Melvin's JGB was cookin' and Melvin was layin' in down on the organ all day. DJ&The Tricksters impressed me as did Melvin's JGB, Keller played after Zero but I was too busy hastlin' CMiller at the DigitalSoundBoarD DOT NET tent for a copy of a nice Matrix mix that I gladly gave 10bucks for and went to say goodbye & good luck on "KimDog/MockDog" tour to Steve as he was leaving right after the Zero set b/c he had to be ATL to offically start the tour(though they played in Milwaukee the night B4) and hung out with Judge for a few then went back to my tent to jam the Zero DSBD.NET disc and find me a lover for the evening as well as someone to get down with the next day SAT 7/7/7 for Robert Walter & The New Riders set also B4 I rode back down to my little corner of the state. Just might see you at the 3G's this year, I bet I find you with Mondo b/c he's so tall I couldn't miss him. Good luck this year man.-007
