Robert Randolph - The Word :: 12.28.07
Music has always had a transcendental element that elevates the soul above and beyond the strife of everyday life. Music fans across America were privy to such heightened states of bliss following the debut CD and inaugural tour from The Word in the summer of 2001, which introduced many to the then 22-year-old sacred steel guitar phenom Robert Randolph. The opportunity to see him perform first as part of The Word, and later at the Bonnaroo debut of his Family Band, was truly inspirational, moving and, yes, even transcendental.

On the night after the Christmas, The Word, which includes Randolph, the complete North Mississippi Allstars: Chris Chew (bass), Cody Dickinson (drums) and Luther Dickinson (guitar), along with MMW's John Medeski (keys) took the stage at the Webster Theatre for the opening night of a four-date run through the Northeast. While the large Webster lacked some of the intimacy from the 2001 tour, this performance was every bit as rousing.

With gracious nods to the crowd, the band picked up their instruments and began with a slow, amorphous, meandering intro to "Without God." To the uninitiated, it may have seemed odd to start with an unstructured free-for-all but with a wave and a nod Randolph brought the band around and launched into the fast paced foot-stomper. Sure enough, the packed audience began to sway and groove, whether right up front or way back in the bar.

Randolph & Luther - The Word :: 12.28.07
Randolph and Luther traded solos on their respective guitars throughout, and despite only performing together on random occasions the pair exhibited a rare cohesiveness. Midway through the first set, the tempo and tone shifted dramatically for a haunting take on "Keep Your Lamp Trimmed and Burning," which featured Randolph moaning on sacred steel and Luther playing out the protagonist harmony on the electric. Traditionally a short folk song, here it was reworked as a long, dark atmospheric smoker. The first set concluded with another high-energy rave up, "At The Cross," which gave Medeski a chance to dance playfully from one ivory key to the next.

The theatre remained fully packed through the break as the best was yet to come. Set Two began with a soulful, funky take on Marvin Gaye's "Inner City Blues." The incredibly tight rhythm section served as the backbone while both Medeski and Randolph soulfully grooved around the deep funk. One could feel the Southern Gospel grace in the heartfelt rendition of "Joyful Sounds," where both guitarists bounded up and down the necks of their instruments with a slide, inciting the most invigorating dancing of the evening. People were shaking everywhere on the spirited closer "I'll Fly Away," which included several Luther teases of "Turn On Your Love Light." Bassist Chew stood at a mic for a vocal turn that disappointingly never materialized on the Hendrix classic "Voodoo Chile," during which Randolph leaned over his lap steel, sweat dripping from his brow, his instrument swaying back and fourth as his feet on the pedals manically attempted to keep up with his hands. It was an inspiring end to a surprisingly tight performance that left everyone feeling as though they'd been lifted up to a divine place.

i saw them in nyc on the 27th, Randolph got on the drums and rocked, the drummer got on the guitar and they attempted, an allman bro's duel, that didnt quite work yet was still awesome, then RR got on the guitar and tore it up as well. this show was a display of true southern showmanship, the hard working musician ethic that has made the south the heart and soul of rock. the yanks were blown away, and the word stuck to it like the allmans peaking at the beacon.

Nice article and great shots. I was at the DC showed on the 29th, they kicked some serious ass. Unfortunately my camera sucks balls and my pics turned out like a bunch blurry people. But otherwise it was an incredible show and well worth being crammed in the front for.

Great Photography...........

I also attended the DC show, but unlike the commenter above, I felt the show to be very boring and stale. After awhile, Robert's lap steel sounds like a clucking chicken. Honestly, I was shocked, because I had really, really high hopes for the show.

Great write up on the CT show though!

I was also at the NYC show and got my face thoroughly melted. Their musicianship is truly something to behold. Now I'm ready for a good old fashioned MMW tour this spring!

I was at this show and it was sweaty madness. Great pics, great chemistry on stage, wild crowd (don't know why everyone was so wasted, but I liked it). Randolph's playing can be a little over the top at times. When he slows it down, like midway through the second set, shit is nasty. Second set was blistering. Forgot to mention two of the better moments: Cody Dickinson on electric washboard with sweat pouring off of him while Randolph was on the kit, and and a security guard trying to get on stage so he could see the dudes puffing in the front rows. Luther got about an inch behind while ripping a solo and the audience howling with delight. And Medeski is no slouch on the keys.

I would've loved to catch one of these shows. I wish someone would have written a review of the NMAS new years eve show with Derek Trucks and Susan. One of the best new years I've had. I had forgotten how badass the allstars were and was blown away by Luther and Derek's chemistry onstage. I hope their career paths will join in the future.

One of my best shows ever!!! I peed my pants a bit on I'll Fly Away. Had to giggle when my lil sis was shocked when she caught me singing This Land is My Land. Then she caught the fun of trying to figure out what they were playing. She fell in love with Randolph. Seriously what a cutie!! Looks like a little 3rd grader playin his heart out. Medeski looking like a mad scientist!! It was a great venue too. The staff and manager were so nice and accommodating. To the pricks who were trying to bust into the handi bathroom FU!!

I saw them in Philly. It was pretty much insane from the Joyful Sounds opener. It seemed like every song would crescendo to a close, the crowd would go nuts, and then they would go right back in to that song. This happened multiple times on some songs, but it didn't get old. I loved it. My highlight was their take on Stevie's You Haven't Done Nothing. It rocked and so did The Word. I would love a copy of the Philly show if anyone knows where to find one. Haven't seen it on the org. Peace!
