RecommNeds | Willie Watson & Marisa Anderson

Easing back into it with two folksy albums that have different takes on similar ideas…

Willie Watson: Folk Singer Vol. 1

It’s quite simple, really. Reach into the bottomless sack of old time covers and traditionals, grab a handful and your guitar and banjo and just start playing…oh, and make sure the tape is rolling. Willie Watson - founding member of Old Crow Medicine Show - is now, as the album declares, a “folk singer,” and that’s the formula he arrived at for his debut release. The record is pure folk perfection, songs – some you’ll recognize, some you won’t – played as they were originally intended: one guy with a voice and just enough pickin’ to pull it off. The best part is that it’s only volume one.

Marisa Anderson: Traditional & Public Domain Songs

Like Watson, Marisa Anderson is straight to the point with the title of her new album, Traditional & Public Domain Songs. She also reaches into a similar sack and pulls out songs that, for the most part, you’ll almost certainly recognize, if not exactly by name, then definitely by their melody. But instead of hewing to their original form, Anderson – playing solo resonator guitar that seems to echo back centuries – improvises around the well-worn themes. The result is like some sort of an old-timey psychotropic take on the familiar twisted all pretzel-like, immediately fascinating and delicious.
