Update 6/12 10 a.m. PT: Lars Ulrich has accepted the challenge! As per SPIN, here's the Metallica drummer's statement, "It was a little
lonely on the sidelines during the first drum-off, given the somewhat forced nature of the
lookalike element between Chad Smith and Will Ferrell, when I'm TRULY the one carrying
that dead-ringer gene around! As for any further drum-offs, I'm sure that with a bit of
practice, I could give Chad a run for his money. But Will? That's a whole different story.
He rules the 'bad-ass drummer universe.' I mean, you're talking about a guy who's so next
level, actually, so beyond next level, that he may just be completely unreachable! That
said, I'm definitely up for the challenge…Bring it on!!!"
Last month lookalikes Will Ferrell and Chad Smith
competed in a drum battle that was televised on The Tonight Show With Jimmy
Now that the actor and Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer have settled their differences, they
new drum off target in sight - Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich.
Ferrell and Smith discussed their drum battle and new target in a just-published SPIN feature. Here's the bit about bringing Lars into
the drum off fold:
Will: I mean, we did talk about another drum-off. With a third person that looks
similar to Chad and I. A third drummer out there.
Chad: I think it's — did we talk about Lars?
Will: We talked about Lars [Ulrich], from Metallica. So, I don't know.
Have you heard anything back from him?
Will: Your article will be the first mentioning of it.
Chad: This is a scoop!
Will: Lars gets pissed because he gets mistaken for both me and Chad Smith. He can settle
that score now, too.
Chad: There it is. The gauntlet is down.
While we don't quite see the resemblance, if another drum battle can raise hundreds of
thousands of dollars for worthy charities like the first one did, we're all for an Ulrich
vs. Ferrell vs. Smith drum off.
