New Jersey's Vineland Music Festival Postponed to 2009

The inaugural Vineland Music Festival (previous report below) originally scheduled to take place this summer, August 8-10, in Vineland, NJ has been postponed until 2009. Due to the high level of traffic the festival is expected to bring, and in consideration of competition from major bands touring the Northeast already during the summer, Vineland co-producers C3 Presents and Festival Republic have decided to hold off for 2008 and plan more thoroughly for 2009.

Music Fest Coming to Vineland

By Dan DeLuca
INQUIRER MUSIC CRITIC

ACL 2007 by Tony Stack
Never mind Philapalooza: Get ready for the Vineland Music Festival.

Promoter C3 Presents, of Austin, Texas, announced today that the three-day rock festival originally proposed for Philadelphia's Fairmount Park will instead be held August 8 to 10 on a 550-acre farm in Vineland, in South Jersey's Cumberland County.

Over three days, a crowd of 150,000 or more is expected at what C3 partner Charlie Jones called "a camping festival," similar to the Bonnaroo Music Festival held each June in Manchester, Tenn.

The camp-out concert at Menantico Colony, site of a former home for people with disabilities, would be the biggest rock festival New Jersey had ever seen and the biggest multi-day music festival currently on the East Coast.

Earlier this month, the Fairmount Park Commission tabled a vote on whether to grant a contract for a music festival to C3 or its competitor, Live Nation, the concert industry behemoth that owns Philadelphia-based promoters Electric Factory Concerts.

"It's unfortunate it worked out the way it did in downtown Philadelphia," Jones said. "When you have this type of investment, you can't keep waiting. We had to launch."

John Binswanger, a Fairmount Park commissioner and president of the Fairmount Park Conservancy, the Park's fund-raising arm, said he was disappointed that the festival wouldn't be in the park.

"We're going to wait until the first of the year and come back and reevaluate," he said. "There wasn't the opportunity to put together what we wanted."

For the Vineland festival, C3 Presents, which books both the Lollapalooza festival in Chicago and the Austin City Limits fest in Texas, will partner with Festival Republic, the British concert promotion company that puts on the prestigious Glastonbury and Reading festivals in England. Festival Republic is 50.1 percent owned by Live Nation U.K.

Though next summer's Vineland fest will take place a week after Lollapalooza, "this festival has nothing to do with Lollapalooza," Jones said. Nor will the wide-ranging and diverse rock show be themed as a "jam band" festival, as Bonnaroo was when it was founded in 2002.

It's likely, however, that the VMF, which will feature more than 100 bands (and come a week before the Philadelphia Folk Festival, in Schwenksville), will share some of the same acts that play Lolla and Austin.

Jones was not ready to announce any headliners but said the festival would include both big-name and less-mainstream acts. "This event is not about a headliner, although we will have marquee acts. It's about what we like to call 'the meat on the bone,' " he said.

Last summer, Lollapalooza's lineup included Pearl Jam, Amy Winehouse and Philadelphia's The Roots, as well as the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Femi Kuti, and the Hold Steady. Bob Dylan, Björk, the White Stripes, LCD Soundsystem and Steve Earle were among those who played Austin.

For the VMF, Jones and C3's two other concert-promoting Charlies - Walker and Attal - are teaming up with Melvin Benn, the Festival Republic promoter whose work with the Reading and Glastonbury fests provided the model for such American festivals as Bonnaroo and Coachella.

Jones would not say whether the VMF would be an annual event like Lolla, which drew 159,000 people to Chicago's Grant Park in August, or Austin City Limits, which pulled in 225,000 to Austin's Zilker Park in September. (Tickets for three days of music went for $195 at Lollapalooza, and $150 at Austin.)

But "when you launch an event of this size," Jones said, "the intention is to start something that's going to last a long time.

"The idea is to take a European-style model and blend it with a more customer-friendly model like ACL and Lollapalooza, which have been in an urban park setting, and create something that's like no other festival in the world."

James Lelli, director of Vineland's Department of Economic Development, said the festival would be held at Menantico Colony, within the city limit of Vineland, which had a population of 56,271, according to the 2000 census.

The site, which Lelli said was owned by Media-based social services organization Elwyn, had been used for more than a century to aid disabled people, starting in 1888, when it housed the New Jersey Home for the Education and Care of Feebleminded Children. Elwyn's residential facilities there closed about a decade ago.

Mind-blowing
Lelli, 76, called the festival "the biggest thing I've seen here, the biggest thing since sliced bread. We had Louis Armstrong [who died in 1971] play at the Vineland High School stadium and he drew 5,000 to 6,000 people. I thought that was great then. But this blows my mind."

Lelli said the festival "will have a great economic impact... It's good for local businesses. People have to eat and spend money."

He added, "I have no concerns over that many people coming. I'm sure we'll take proper steps... We will draw many from the Shore because this is during the summer. We are only a half-hour ride away."

According to Billboard, this year Austin and Lollapalooza grossed $9.8 million and $11.3 million, respectively. C3 says Austin City Limits has had an economic impact of $129 million since its inception in 2002, and Lollapalooza $106 million since 2005.

Philadelphia festival?
Larry Magid, head of Electric Factory Concerts, was not available for comment today. On Monday he said that although he had reservations about the Fairmount Park site, he was still interested in putting on a scaled-down two-day festival next year in and around the Mann Center for the Performing Arts.

Jones didn't rule out putting on a festival in Philadelphia in the future.

"The Fairmount Park Commission worked tremendously hard," he said. "I had full confidence that it was going to happen. We just ran out of time... Unfortunately it got caught between the current administration and the new administration, and for whatever reason, it kept getting tabled. But we're still in a venue where we can service Philadelphia and its surrounding communities."

this is definitely cool... as a former new jersey resident, i can be the first to attest to how shoddy the music scene is there, especially for being located in the tri-state area... this sounds promising for the dirty jerz.

Trey is from Princeton, as is Blues Traveler. Stevie Wonder has lived in Alpine for 25 years. Miles Davis and Coltrane did about 10 albums for Prestige Records in Hackensack. Sinatra anyone? Vineland is really an extension of Philly anyway, which is what you really need to worry about, and yes there will be brawling.

Hey Jagoffhpv... why don't you wait until a lineup is posted before commenting on a festival sucking. you're really closed minded if all you listen to are jambands. There is a ton of music out there brah.

petemora - Rudy Van Gelder recorded some of the greatest jazz albums ever at his parents home in Hackensack and then at his studio in Englewood Cliffs. Other bands? Yo La Tengo and The Feelies. Both rule!

South Jersey and North East Jersey are different worlds from the urban jungle around Newark (which is probably one of the worst towns/areas I have been to). People who have been there would know that. People who haven't will just repeat what they have heard. Snoozzzzeeeee.

"why would you go ahead and tell people already that this isn't going to be a jamband oriented festival?" Probably because jam band festivals have a negative connotation. Few communities want pot heads camping in their corn fields living off nitrous and veggie burritos. Not to say that is the reality of the situation, but that is what the planning commission would be thinking. They are obviously going for a much wider demographic.

What you are seeing is that these festivals are spreading out like 6 Flags. This is one of the last untapped regions. Perfect to since they can draw from HUGE and diverse populations (NYC, Philly, Baltimore…). After this, I think that the market is saturated.

I was born NJ, and lived there half my life, and currently drive into the state for work. Incase you are wondering, there is absolutley 100% no scene out there what so ever. I'm excited that people out there will be exposed and have an opportunity to experience something like this. My outlook on life changed when I went my first large fest. Maybe other "Garden Staters" will go and bring a little piece of joy home in their hearts with them afterwards. The good Lord knows NJ people need something to cheer them up.

Nice one C3, it's about time they place a festival in the center of the worlds largest megalopolis (which for you retards is an extensive metropolitan area or the area from Boston to Washington as one huge urban area, known as Megalopolis) That being said, the POTential of some badass shows is so HIGH. From Trey, to the Roots, Disco, RRFB, Gov't Mule, I would say this could be pretty BADASS! Maybe Bon Jovi will show up? And to all you assholes Haten on Jersey, thanks and don't come,I enjoy our beautiful beaches after the festival, and hit up Atlantic City for some action, or whateve, nah really, stay home and miss out on what should one of the sickest areas to a festival. Derekmk – Agree. My point was more about the geography and natural beauty. I’m not going to say that this fest won’t be douch central. No way in Hell I will go. I’m sure that security will be brought to you by Blackwater and DynaCorp.

moejoerisin69 – It may be another state, but people from the East Coast (in particular the sprawl between DC to Boston) are wound a bit tight compared to the rest of the US.

Philhitz – If you read the article, the state has nothing to do with it. It is all C3 who also run other fests. Read the article for more info.

talkin' fests in general - & don't recall any being in nj beforehand & this is defintely the biggest so far - that is what i've meant by that -- & that the idea has been used a time or two, meaning these big fests are really not that great a scene in general anymore - it kinda ended for the mega-fest w/ roo '05 -- but then again i wouldn't mind trying ACL or telluride & they're both pretty big.

First, for all you Jersey naysayers, it is known as the Garden State and aside from the urban mess in North Jersey, Camden and Trenton, it's a relatively nice place.

However, Vineland is possibly the worst place to hold a festival of this size. If you think the traffic leading in/out of Bonnaroo is a nightmare, wait until this unfolds. There are essentiall two roads leading in/out of Vineland, neither of which is remotely capable of handling that volume of traffic. Those roads can't even handle rush hour.

Count me out.
