MARK LANEGAN & GREG DULLI RETURN TO SUB POP AS THE GUTTER TWINS
Saturnalia Scheduled for March 4, 2008 Worldwide Release

The Gutter Twins
Sub Pop veterans Greg Dulli and Mark Lanegan return to the label in its 20th year under the moniker The Gutter Twins for the March 4, 2008 worldwide release of Saturnalia, their highly anticipated first album. In addition, the band has announced a handful of very special U.S. and European show dates to preview the complex and carefully crafted songs in advance of the official record release. Show dates and on sale information provided below.

Mark Lanegan rose to fame as singer for the much loved Seattle band Screaming Trees and Greg Dulli as the magnetic leader of the Afghan Whigs. Following the break up of both groups, Lanegan and Dulli went on to achieve significant notice on their own. Lanegan continued to release successful solo albums, as well as create vivid partnerships with the likes of Belle & Sebastian singer Isobel Campbell and Queens of the Stone Age. Dulli, meanwhile, innovatively fused indie, soul and electronic sounds in his post-Whigs ensemble the Twilight Singers, who released their first album, Twilight As Played By The Twilight Singers, in 2000; the most recent Twilight effort, 2006's Powder Burns, proved a crowning achievement, landing on many year-end best lists.

The Gutter Twins was born out of a rumor told by Lanegan to a journalist after the two artists began collaborating together in various ways in 2002. What started as a rumor grew into an honest and raw record, and while Saturnalia brings together the driving forces behind '90s favorites, the record does not rest on the sonic laurels of these singer’s previous successes.

"I couldn't tell you what Saturnalia's theme is, but there's a seeking of transcendence that's new" Greg Dulli explains. "I have never written songs like this before, it's a different temple I'm visiting."

02/19/08 La Maroquinerie Paris, FRA

Mark Lanegan is one of my favorite song writers ever. Hands down, he's got a gruff sandpaper voice made from the perfect combination of whiskey and cigarettes and with it he weaves dark rosy abstract imagery like no other. I'm so happy to see him get a nod on jambase. He's been doing his thing since the mid eighties. His most recent solo album Bubblegum is excellent and I'll Take Care of You, an album of country and Americana covers, is an ear treat as well.

Was sort of a fan of the Whigs, but damn, the Screaming Trees were ahead of their time and unfortunately got pigeonholed into the grunge era (which they sort of were and they were from Seattle.) A great psychedelic band with a heavy angle, but they didn't rely on big heavy dumb riffs. I always wished they would have put out a live album because the bootlegs I have are garbage quality-wise. They have an anthology and the studio records are great. The last one was a bit too polished, which is really why I wanted a decent live album. The songwriting and musicianship is great.

And Lanegan's solo stuff is awesome. Curl yourself up with a bottle of bourbon and a joint. Of course, that might not be called for, but his stuff is great. Whiskey for the Holy Ghost will send shivers down yer spine.

Too bad I don't make it to Europe, NY, or San Fran that often (ever). If you are around, this is probably worth checking out.

K23 - I'll Take Care of You is fantastic. Great call.

Others to check out...

Uncle Anesthesia. Trees

The Winding Sheet. Lanegan (My personal favorite.)

And I can't recall the Album Title, but the Singles soundtrack song (Nearly Lost You) is on the Album prior to Dust and that is album is strong.

I've been waiting for this for 2+ years now. I'm a HUGE fan of both Dulli and Lanegan. The Whigs are still my all time favorite band. Love the Screaming Trees (Sweet Oblvion is the album you were looking for Luthor), and enjoy Lanegan's solo work even more. My favorite is Field Songs (the last acoustic(y) album he did before he brought in Homme on Bubblegum). I can already tell you this is going to be my favorite album of 08.

Whiskey for the Holy Ghost is another good solo effort, some songs are better than others, but there are great moments. Same with the collaborative effort with Isobell Campbell, there are some awesome songs on that as well. Her ethereal voice is a great compliment to Mark's unique tone. HAs anyone heard the Soulsavers disc???

Besides Monster Magnet, Afghan Whigs are the most underrated band of all time.
