Radiohead Set First 2008 Dates

I already heard a rumor that Radiohead is going to headline Lollapalooza this summer (reason being that they loved playing in Grant Park the 1st time they did), does anyone know if there is any truth to that?

did they love grant park because they didn't wait in line starting at 10 a.m. in 100-degree heat to get a spot about 75 yards from the stage?

That could be the reason. I know last year the Chicago Park District turned them away from having a show at Grant Park for a few different reasons such as scheduleing and how much has to be done in order to have a 20000+ concert at Grant park, plus, there's a big difference between a free concert in the park, and a concert which charges addmission. Lollapalooza has, i believe, a 5 year deal with the park district. It would be a smart business move on their part to have a clause which states no other concert's for profit could be held there other than lollapalooza. That would almost force a band to play Lollla, if they were that hell-bent on perfoming at the park. I know Radiohead went to great lengths last summer to get a show at Grant Park, and were not successful, forcing them to have the show at the Auditorium theatre. I have a friend that works at JAM productions in Chicago, he's the one that told me about the rumor (99% of the time he's accurate about this stuff, example, he knew about the Pearl Jam show at the Vic a month before it was even announced, everyone said he was full of shit, and, well, you know the rest...)

Oversold? I'm sorry but you have no idea what your talking about. Oversold doesn't even make sense in the music industry in its current state especially in regards to radiohead's recent release method. Bigfro turn down your overplayed and cliche hippie jams then listen to in rainbows on a pair of decent speakers, smoke some of your cali nugs to bra for some added effect.

And i really hope radiohead doesn't play Lollapalooza that would be a waste of a US show. Crammed set, too many people, low quality sound....Yorke keep it classy as always

Despite your previous undue rancor I'm gonna have to go ahead and agree with you here. In addition to the reasons you mentioned, in my experience Lollapalooza is not an ideal venue for frequent concert goers who want to hear a top-tier performance. It's (harshly) more of a tourist trap for families and casual listeners who don't have a chance to make it out to see their favorite bands all the time so instead make a once a year circus of it. If Radiohead is to play a Chicago-area venue this year and wants to make a true experience of it, they should consider the Ravinia pavilion. Lotta fun to be had up there.

radiohead tour makes me happy. I hope all those who ordered discboxes are as excited as i am....round 2 of in rainbows is in about a week.....

I am veryyy open minded. I tried to like MOE for years. and still. only some songs are cool.

with RH. I DO NOT GET IT. I hear nothing special in rainbows. its just ambient floaty vocals over spacey music.

I like relaxing music yes.. Jose Gonzales is fantastic.

I just do not understand why RH is such a big deal to so many people.

I hate it when I do not get it. I got the dead, phish, jose g, wsp, I mean I like nearly all of it. I will keep trying ... they have talent and magic that is just not reaching me,, maybe I am trying tooo hard???

milesgone: do you like the bends or ok computer? the bends is the album that made me love them and it is still my favorite album of theirs. i do understand if some people don't like them. but they are fantastic musicians and inovative in their approach to music and the industry.

I will try out the bends.. and ok computer. have not heard of them.

Man, I didn't realize how much Lollapalooza negativity there would be. I, for one, have atteneded at least 1 day of the festival every year, and have enjoyed it every time. I will admit that it's very croweded, but 99% of music festivals are. I havn't gone to lolla ever on the final day (which was when chili peppers and pearl jam played the last 2 year) to see just how bad it gets, but after ween 2 years ago and daft punk this past year, it didn't seem even close to the crowds bonnaroo gets. As far as the sound, i can't really recall any personal issues I had with that either, everyone I saw sounded pretty good to me. If you want shitty sound, goto Moe's summercamp (and i'm also a moe fan here). anyhow, i'd love to see radiohead headline lolla for 3 reasons. one, being from chicago, lollapaooza is a few miles from my house, so location is a big one. two, everyone that wants to see them will have a fair chance at getting a ticket(unlike their past shows in chicago where you either need hook-ups or luck) and three, grant park is a great venue to see live music. that's just my opinion, anyways.

milesgone - i would absolutely listen to 'ok computer' over 'in rainbows.' in their new album, there's definitely a more stripped-down approach than on others. it might be helpful to pick up an older release. but there are lots of remarkable tracks on the new one - the shuffle-funk of '15 step,' a damn catchy song for a 5/8 time signature. give it a few more spins and really absorb it.

i think radiohead is certainly one of "those bands" that you're either into or you're not. i think they're the cats pajamas because they represent a cohesion of a lot of the music i like - they have their roots firmly planted in modern rock music, but they also expand and touch upon electronica, psychedelia, ambient and even chicago-era jazz, not to mention that they can craft some of the most beautiful pop songs out today.

as musicians, their technical abilities are second to none, and they are renouned for their daring song arrangements, lush atmospherics, and artful implementations of technology within their music.

thom's lyrics are wry, passionate and full of a palpable level of disdain and distrust for society, technology and politicians (something that i certainly relate with).

so, before you write them off, definitely pick up ok computer, the bends or hail to the thief. radiohead is a diamond in the popular music rough.

Cheers to Lollapalooza! That would be sick to have Thom and the boys headline. They were the first band to ever play hutchinson field, so it would be only fitting to have them back. Hopefully another full moon that more songs can be dedicated to...does anyone remember this, or was it just a mirage in the insane heat that day?

In Rainbows is better than anything else they made in this decade, but that's not saying much. I feel like OK Computer is Radiohead's DSOTM. There's no way Radiohead could ever make an album as wonderful as that ever again.

However, I do think Thom Yorke could **** in a box and have no problem selling it for $12.99. Some (not all), but some RH fans have become quite fanatic and ridiculous. All bands have fanatical fans, but man, there's so much hype about RH and they don't really put out that much music comparatively. Just a thought.

Clarification - According to the guys on Sound Opinions (Chicago Public Radio), Radiohead wanted to play the Pritzker Pavilion in Millennium Park in Spring 2006. It is the band shell designed by Frank Gehry (who also did the Disney Hall in LA, the Guggenheim in Bilbao and I think the Hendrix museum in Seattle - his work is like porn - you would know it when you see it). Anyway, it would have been charged for and not free and they wanted to play 3 straight nights. They got turned down because the Grant Park Orchestra (who no longer plays in Grant Park) was practicing at Pritzker Pavilion on some of those nights. Instead, they played the Auditorium Theater.

Chicago Parks have been really bitchy about R+R at Millennium Park that is why free shows (like the XRT July 4th) are relegated to the band shell at Grant Park (totally different venue). I think that the only R+R shows there were the Decembrist (who only charged for pavilion seating)and Wilco this year. I think that the Decembrist only got the nod because they used the Grant Park Orchestra and the Wilco show was a benefit. Not sure what they will allow in Millennium Park next year.

And yes - love Rainbows, but looking forward to hearing it in a better format than 160 mp3. Still think Kid-A and OK are better.

A) bunches of kids who spend half their time on cell phones chatting during a set

B) MILF's and kids who are there to "see and be seen"

C) Real morons who think that they can save a place in front of the board for their 5 friends who don't show up till the band starts to play.

ACL is a much better fest since more of the people are music fans.

well, as far as the cell phone thing, that's anywhere you go now a days. I went to Ween a few weeks back, and the guy in front of me spent the first 5 songs trying to capture a cell phone video of the band to send to other people, however, it didn't seem like he knew what he was doing and bothered everyone asking if they knew how to send it out.(he was "that guy" in the crowd).

With the milf's and kids, hey, it's a free country, and as far as to see and be seen, that seemed more like the late teens early 20's aspect of the crowd to me more than kids who's parents brought them to the show. If a 13 year old is into the music, and his/her only way of getting there is via his parents or another responsible adult, i don't see what the problem is at all.(i started going to shows when i was 12 and delt with the same shit).

I'v never been to ACL, and have heard great things about it, but I have been to Bonnaroo twice(2003 + 2005) and i will say that especially in 2005, that fest was filled with people who just seemed to be there for "the scene" while not knowing shit about who or what they were seeing most of the weekend, just there to party there asses off and hopefully get laid.(that aspect and rising costs are part of why i'm done with bonnaroo) I met many really cool people at this and last years lollapalooza, much more so than Bonnaroo where everyone seems to be bombed on drugs and alcohol. Anyhow, I'm still hopeful that Radiohead headlines Lollapalooza.

Listen to OK Computer once. And don't listen to it while you are doing anything else. Give it a full listen as if it were the first time you were hearing music. If you do not immediately like it, listen to it again, and then one more time for good measure. Also, I think it is important to understand the context of that album. It came out in 1997, during what could be considered a dark time for rock and roll music. I have always liked Radiohead, but OK Computer goes beyond the band. It is a pop music album that has not seen a match in the last 15 years.

Best pop album in the last 15 years? Ooh, that's bound to draw heavy fire from both sides. Watch out!

I think when the question of what the best album of the 90's was comes up, OK Computer is probably the most common answer I've heard. It really is an amazing album. That and The Bends are easily my favorite Radiohead albums.

It is actually possible that they will change his opinion, considering he has only heard In Rainbows and Hail to the Thief. OK Computer and The Bends are light years better than those two, in my opinion. But, if he listens to those and doesn't like them, then I can safely say he won't like anything by Radiohead, which is just fine. Nobody HAS to like Radiohead.
