Gov't Mule with Over 30 Guests :: 5.2.14 :: Saenger Theatre :: New Orleans, LA

Gov't Mule continued a long tradition of guest-heavy performances in New Orleans at the Saenger Theatre last night. The parade of guests started immediately with the Dirty Dozen Brass Band horns joining in on the "John The Revelator" opener. Later in the first set The Blind Boys of Alabama and keyboardist Chuck Leavell (Rolling Stones, Allman Brothers Band) helped out of "Soulshine." The first set continued with a "You Can Leave Your Hat On" that featured Steven Bernstein, Doug Weiselman, Kevin Harris, Erik Lawrence, Chuck Leavell, Ivan Neville, Cyril Neville and Alecia Chakour. Rock legend Don Was and guitarist Devon Allman were added to the mix for "Ventilator Blues." The band then cleared the stage for "No Reward" and "Captured." Blues great Johnny Winter and Paul Nelson helped out on the "Don't Want No Woman" and "Dust My Broom" that followed. The set came to a close with Luther and Cody Dickinson as well as Trombone Shorty guesting on "Feel Like Breaking Up Somebody's Home."

Three songs into the second set Bill Kreutzmann, George Porter Jr., Alecia Chakour & The Shady Horns came out for a cover of the Grateful Dead's "Sugaree." Those guests along with Fred Tackett and Paul Barrere of Little Feat and G-Love were added for the fitting "City Of New Orleans." Next up was "It's A Man's World" with guests Eric Krasno, Charles Bradley & The Shady Horns, which was followed by a cover of "Dreams" featuring Sonny Landreth. Landreth also helped out on "32/20 Blues" that closed the second set and the "Maggot Brain" > "Cortez" encore. Check out the full setlist after Adam's photos...
