Porter Jr., Hampton & Sipe Guest With Widespread Panic

Widespread Panic closed out Panic en la Playa last night at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic with another guest-filled show. Bass legend George Porter Jr., mentor Col. Bruce Hampton and ARU drummer Jeff Sipe all sat in at one point during the band's fourth of four shows at the resort.

The Georgia rockers started the night with an 86-minute first set that included a take on Alan Price's "Sell Sell" and saw the band insert "Hatfield" in the middle of brute.'s "Protein Drink"/"Sewing Machine." Porter emerged on bass with Sipe on percussion for the "Tipitina" that kicked off the second set. Widespread Panic had last played the Professor Longhair-penned tune way back on June 21, 2008. George then handled vocals for The Meters's "Just Kissed My Baby," which had been on the shelf since October 16, 2011. Following the pair of New Orleans classics, Panic brought out Col. Bruce Hampton for Bukka White's "Fixin' To Die." The closing stanza also contained the dream "Papa's Home" > "Arleen" > "Papa's Home" sequence before the fitting pairing of "Vacation" and "Postcard." Widespread Panic finished out the third installment of Panic en la Playa with a three-song encore of War's "Slippin' Into Darkness" > "Ain't Life Grand" > "Life During Wartime" by Talking Heads.
