When the lineup for this summer's Gathering Of The Vibes was revealed on
Saturday night one particular listing on the sensational bill caught our attention -
The Disco Biscuits featuring Grateful Dead drummers Mickey
Hart and Bill
Kreutzmann. We had so many questions and thankfully a new piece on Rolling Stone by
our friend Benjy Eisen has
provided some answers.
Our first question is whether the ensemble would perform Grateful Dead songs. Eisen's
post, while noting that nothing has been worked out yet, mentions that "fans can expect to
hear material from both bands' catalogs." We also wondered what the members of the
Biscuits thought about the pairing. TDB keyboardist Aron Magner tells Benjy, "I grew up on
the Grateful Dead, so I'm particularly psyched to have both Billy and Mickey joining us.
Though our music is quite different, the ethos is the same – both on the improvisational
level as well as in the sense of community that our bands have created with our fans."
Eisen spoke with Kreutzmann about the project and Billy reveals, "It's going to get weird.
It's going to get far out. And it's going to be something completely different, exactly
what all involved parties are known for." Sounds good to us! Hart also talked to Benjy
about his familiarity with jamtronica, and Mickey - who once toured with Particle - told
him, "The Disco Biscuits seem to prefer trance/space, moment music. Bill and I are quite
familiar with the genre. Let the fun begin!"
Gathering Of The Vibes 2014 will take place at Seaside Park in Bridgeport, CT July 31 -
August 3. Widespread Panic, John Fogerty, moe. and Umphrey's McGee are among the acts set
to play this year's installment. Head to Rolling Stone for Benjy Eisen's
post about the Disco Biscuits set with The Rhythm Devils.
