Guests A Plenty Fill In For Anders & Jackie At Terrapin Crossroads

A few hours before last night's Phil Lesh & Friends's show at Terrapin Crossroads, a note posted on the venue's Facebook page let attendees know Anders Osborne and Jackie Greene would be unable to perform after coming down with the flu. While full refunds were offered to all holding tickets to the gig, the show went on with Lesh calling upon a number of guests to fill in on a memorable evening at the San Rafael, CA venue.

The core band for the show featured Lesh, keyboardist Adam MacDougall, guitarist Ross James of the Terrapin Family Band and drummer Joe Russo. We were glad to see Phil bring up Tommy Hamilton, who's part of Joe Russo's Almost Dead (and Brothers Past & American Babies), as a guest for portions of the concert as well as multi-instrumentalist Jason Crosby, singer/songwriting guitarist Danny Click, percussionist Alex Koford and vocalist Emily Sunderland.

Click led the ensemble through a cover of JJ Cale's "After Midnight" to start the show. Hamilton then came out for "Scarlet Begonias." Danny had another chance fronting the group on a "Girl From The North Country" that featured Crosby on fiddle. Tommy returned for the "Cumberland Blues," "Brown Eyed Women," "Mississippi Half-Step" sequence. James then handled vocals on "A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall" which also saw contributions from Click and Crosby.

When the group came back for the second set, Alex Koford helped out on percussion as he did for the entire closing stanza. Set Two started off with a jam-filled "Viola Lee Blues" sandwich that contained "Folsom Prison Blues" and "Unbroken Chain" mixed in between verses. Lesh and Hamilton shared vocals on "Viola Lee." Next, James fronted the ensemble for a pair of interesting covers - "Sweet Jane" (Velvet Underground) and "Hurricane" (Bob Dylan). The set concluded with "Eyes Of The World" > "China" / "Rider." Sunderland emerged along with the rest of the evening's performers for a "Turn On Your Lovelight" encore. Both Jackie and Anders are expected back for tonight's birthday show. Lesh turns 74 today and we celebrated with a playlist featuring our favorite Phil songs.
