Report | Jerry Garcia & DMB Record Store Day Vinyl

UPDATE 8:45 a.m. PT: The Jerry Garcia team has confirmed the Record Store Day release of Garcia. Here's the details:

On April 19th, Round Records will re-issue Garcia, Jerry Garcia's solo debut, in celebration of Record Store Day. 1,500 copies of Garcia will be re-issued on 180-gram white vinyl featuring individually numbered foil-stamped packaging and an MP3 download card. The audio was meticulously mastered specifically for vinyl release by Joe Gastwirt using the original 30ips 1/4" mix master reels and pressed to vinyl by RTI.

Garcia was originally released in January 1972 and peaked at No. 35 on the Billboard 200 – the highest charting solo release of Garcia’s career. Garcia provides most of the album’s instrumentation himself, performing on acoustic guitar, electric guitar, pedal steel, bass, piano, organ, samples and vocals. Grateful Dead drummer Bill Kreutzmann appears on drums. The album’s songs – six of which became staples in the Grateful Dead repertoire – are credited to Garcia, Kreutzmann and lyricist Robert Hunter.

Garcia spoke lightly of the album at the time, telling Rolling Stone, “I’m just going on a trip. I have curiosity to see what I can do, and I’ve a desire to get into sixteen track and go on trips that are too weird for me to want to put anybody else I know through. And also I want to pay for this house.”

While Garcia characterized the album as “self-indulgent,” notes, “Time has rendered that assessment utterly false, as Garcia is nothing short of a full-bodied artistic expression from one of rock & roll’s most multi-faceted musicians.”

Our friends at Wax Poetic have been busy beavers putting together their reliable list of expected Record Store Day releases. The latest update came in the middle of the night and features a listing for an interesting Jerry Garcia vinyl release.

According to the Wax Poetic, 1,500 individually numbered copies of Jerry Garcia's 1972 solo debut, Garcia, will be issued on white 180g vinyl this Record Store Day (April 19). The vinyl will feature remastered audio from the original reels. Jerry shows off his versatility on his first album as he plays acoustic guitar, electric guitar, pedal steel guitar, bass, piano and organ over the course of its 10 tracks.

Wax Poetic also reports that the Dave Matthews Band will issue 2,000 copies of the 4-LP Live Trax: Volume 4 on 12" colored vinyl featuring the group's April 30, 1996 show on Record Store Day.

Other Record Store Day releases are expected from the Grateful Dead and Allman Brothers as well as Jimmy Page & The Black Crowes.
