Steamrolled? I don't know; just my opinion, but that phrase makes it sound more like a competition than a collaboration. Sure, Tony is a monster and legend, and displays a facility with the flatpicked acoustic guitar far more advanced than Jerry achieved as evidenced by the Pizza Tapes, but Jerry is totally aware of this and happily plays the spoiler. Without the craggy warmth of his vocals, choice of song gems and general interplay, it would sound like just another expertly played bluegrass jam. There is something so personal and imtimate about the Pizza Tapes; Jerry, to me, comes off as such a steward of great old songs as well as a really likable guy. Sounds like you folks down South have a big treat here. Enjoy...

Jerry IS the pizza tapes. The loaf is right; without Jerry's voice (and guitar) these songs do not get interpreted nearly as effectively. I don't think this was Tony's intention: "I'm goanna go to Grisman's house and kick Garcia's ass". Rice is one of the best flatpickers alive and Jerry definitely holds his own. Tony's solo on Shady Grove is unf+++ingbelievable, however, and Jerry lets him know it.

of course I meant this in a good way. please do not be offended.

I love both of them immensely. Tony just really smoked his solos.

No dis-respect intended.

None taken. Rice is a monster player. I've seen him with Peter Rowan a couple times. Totally sick. Check out the late John Hartford if you wanna see someone who writes incredible songs and plays incredible banjo and fiddle. There is some YouTube of him and Tony with Mark O'Connor.

single note flat picked scales at amazing speeds does not a guitarist make. kids can you say technique? thats what jerry brings to the table. style, substance, things larry keel doesn't have. check out clarence white if you want perfect combo

I'm sure that sounds great miles. Aereoplane is the classic Hartford album (its been in and out of print) its the Newgrass bible. Mark Twang, Live at Mountain Stage, Steampowerd Aereotakes, Morning Bugle are all great too.
