Top Shows of the Year:
Joe Russo's Almost Dead - 1/26 (Brooklyn Bowl, Brooklyn NY)
Russo had spent years tackling the Grateful Dead repertoire as a member of Furthur, before getting a chance to show off his own interpretation of the legendary songs with Tom Hamilton and his Bustle In Your Hedgerow band mates at Brooklyn Bowl in January as part of The Freaks Ball. You'd never know it was the band's first show as they delivered potent and impressive takes on every tune they played. It was like stepping into the early '70s that night in Williamsburg as the quintet left my jaw on the floor throughout their performance.

Paul McCartney - 8/9 (Outside Lands, San Francisco, CA)
At age 71 Paul McCartney is playing with the energy and spirit of a man half his age. For his Out There tour, Macca loaded the setlist with Beatles and Wings classics he hadn't performed live before or hadn't played in years making for an incredible and relentless set. McCartney made the most of his headlining slot at Night One of this year's Outside Lands festival, showing the youngsters how it's done.

Phish - 11/1 (Boardwalk Hall, Atlantic City NJ)
After shocking the fan base by debuting the Wingsuit suite instead of their typical Halloween m.o. of covering another band's album, Phish delivered a show for the ages at Boardwalk Hall on November 1. This gig had it all from well- jammed improvisational wizardry ("Twist"), fun banter ("Makisupa Policeman") and plenty of teases ("Under Pressure," "Shaft"). November 1 jumped towards the top of my list of Best Phish Shows Seen and has received plenty of play on my iPhone since that night.

Steely Dan - 10/8 (Beacon Theatre, New York NY)
The jazz-rock legends let it all hang out at their 53rd and final show of a lengthy tour. Donald Fagen and Walter Becker surround themselves with some of the most talented musicians in the game and dropped one masterful song after another in their hometown of New York City. The setlist was loaded with hits and even contained a tour debut as the Dan ended their tour with its first version of "Pretzel Logic" of 2013.

Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers - 5/21 (Beacon Theatre, New York NY)
When Petty revealed he'd be digging deep into his repertoire for a pair of residencies I knew I had to get to one of these shows. I sure picked the right night as I saw the group cover songs from the likes of Booker T., The Byrds and the Grateful Dead as well as weave deep cuts from throughout their illustrious career into a memorable 21-song performance. There was even an impressive jam as The Heartbreakers embarked on a twisted, psychedelic swamp-rock jam out of The Travelin' Wilburys's "Tweeter And The Monkey Man."
