Pullin’ ‘Tubes | Moby’s Perfect Life Featuring Wayne Coyne

There is no denying the popularity of Electronic Dance Music. The genre has exploded in popularity over the last handful of years, with the genre's biggest acts headlining arenas and summer music festivals – something that seemed almost unfathomable a little less than 20 years ago. For a generation of music fans it might hard to remember a time when electronic music was sitting outside the mainstream and looking for a way to percolate up from the underground. While I’m far from an expert on EDM I think that it’s safe to say that Moby played a major role in helping to bring “techno” music to the masses with the release of his 1999 career-defining album Play.

The critically-acclaimed album featured an interesting combination of tunes that contained unlikely samples from traditional gospel and folk tracks sitting alongside blissed-out ambient tracks and club anthems. Over the course of a two-year period the record was seemingly unavoidable thanks in part to its songs being liberally licensed for use in television shows, movies and commercials, all of which helped it to sell over 12-million copies worldwide. While his subsequent follow-ups have never garnered as much commercial success, Moby helped to open the door for the current wave of EDM artists.

On September 30, Moby will release his eleventh studio effort with the double-album Innocents via Mute Records. The 18-track album sees Moby collaborating with an eclectic mix of artists from fellow label mate Cold Specks to Mark Lanegan to Damien Jurado. Additionally, he teamed up with Flaming Lips front man Wayne Coyne on quite arguably the feel-good track of the year - "The Perfect Life." Let’s check out the slightly NSFW video for the anthemic, psychedelic gospel-soul track, which features Moby and Wayne dressed as Mariachi singers, roller-skating ghosts, a ribbon twirler in a gimp costume and more.
