Weekly RecommNeds | Kingsley Flood And Houndmouth

Kingsley Flood - Battles

I didn’t make it to Newport Folk Festival this year, sadly, but discovering Kingsley Flood this summer made me feel a little bit like I did. These guys are the classic crossover band I usually come away from Folk Fest gushing about and their album, Battles, is a perfect mix of folk and rock, sometimes acoustic and pretty, others rollicking and raucous. This is the kind of record that’s filled with songs that have you singing along to the second chorus after hearing just the first: infectious, moving, well- written tunes. Heck, I caught my son belting out “King’s Men” completely involuntarily the other day after hearing it once in the car.

Houndmouth: From The Hills Below The City

If you haven’t heard Houndmouth yet, what have you been waiting for? These guys have spent the spring and summer impressing people with opening band sets and in afternoon slots at several of the big time festivals. Theirs is a rootsy rock and roll, a Midwest mix of the Felice Brothers and Deer Tick with split male/female vocals and a fun, boozy spirit. Unsurprisingly their great album and live show buzz is starting to percolate, so hop on the Houndmouth train before it leaves the station without ya!
