What is wrong with you people? This is just notable news in the music world... When an artist becomes the biggest selling artist in the history of music that doesn't qualify as news? I don't get the impression JamBase is covering, or "into" Garth Brooks, this is just news - and rather valid news... it's a music site, this is music news.

For some reason, this doesn't surprise me. It says a lot about society as a whole that Garth Brooks is the biggest recording artist in history. To quote the great Jim James: "Open your mouth, here comes the spoon. You're gonna eat what I give you, you're gonna like it real good." We live amongst a race of sheeple, unable to think for themselves. So, they buy the albums that every one else is buying. It's a sad state of affairs.

No, but this is a MUSIC site... Elvis sold more records than every rock band, every songwriter, every jazz band, every hip-hop act and every other type of MUSIC in the world. Elvis was arguably the first rock star we ever had, now Garth Brooks (who i could give a shit about) is the number one selling MUSIC artist in the history of the world. Seems pretty newsworthy to me. I may not care about Garth or most country music, but i'm into music, i study the history of music and am really genuinely interested in MUSIC, this is certainly MUSIC news.

This may be a music site but this article does not support Jambase's core values. Let's look at their mission statement, shall we?

JamBase exists to connect music fans everywhere with the music they love

To accomplish our mission, we seek:

To provide the most complete, accurate and up-to-date concert information resource anywhere on the web, and to keep making it better.

To recognize and respect the core values of the musical community of which we are a reflection.

To experience and explore the greatest music the universe has to offer and to report back to you with the results.

To constantly promote and expose music of substance and character.

JamBase is deeply committed to supporting and growing the live music community. We believe that live music can change the world, and we are committed to channeling the power of live music into positive social and environmental action.

Pay particular attention to this: To recognize and respect the core values of the musical community of which we are a reflection.

Garth Brooks reflects nothing regarding the fanbase that reads this site. In addition, Garth Brooks is far from the greatest music the universe has to offer. It equates to reporting on Britney Spears, Linkin Park and whatever other garbage you can find at the "top of the charts". We don't want it here....

I still think you're all missing the point. Garth Brooks is the biggest selling artist of all time. Sure, it's newsworthy, but for the love of God, we've been blessed with musicians such as Pink Floyd, Jimi Hendrix, the Beatles, the Dead, etc., etc.!! Yet, the masses insist on buying Garth Brooks, Brittney Spears, and Backstreet Boys albums! To me, that's very alarming and pathetic! JamBase is entitled to report on anything they want. The people bitching should really be pissed at society. JamBase is just pointing out the facts.

Keenan: If Spears or Linkin Park ever became the biggest selling artists of all time (which is impossible) then JamBase would, and should report it. As kyjed indicated, these are the facts. JamBase never ran press releases or features or show reviews or any other type of press to help Garth Brooks sell records, they are just reporting on a monumental moment in music history. It's been decades since anyone sold more records than Elvis - DECADES - to not report something of this magnitude would be ridiculous. And curiously, do you think Elvis is garbage? This is news about him as well. Do i wish Floyd, the Beatles or Hendrix sold more records than Garth Brooks? Of course, but that's not how it went down, to not see this as relevant music news is ridiculous.

Just for all you folks who bash musicians for the sake of bashing musicians...In 1997, on "The Late Show w/ Conan O'Brien," Garth Brooks performed a song called "Do What You Gotta Do," which was written be a guy named Pat Flynn. Pat Flyyn was a session musician before teaming up with Sam Bush, John Cowan and Bela Fleck in a little band called New Grass Revival...you might have heard of them. So, what does this have to do with Garth Brooks? I'm glad you asked. When Garth Brooks performed that song on that night, he asked New Grass Revival to be his backing band. Previous to that, the only NGR shows were a benefit in 1996 for a fromer guitarist of the band and an opening spot at The Grateful Dead's 1989 NYE show at the Oakland Coliseum.

Please be a little more open-minded and for the love of christ, if you're going to bash someone DO YOUR F-ING HOMEWORK FIRST!!!

This is HUGE music news. One of the most significant events in pop music. Yea, it may be crap music, but important news never the less. It’s like one of those seemingly unbeatable records like Ty Cobb’s all time hits, Gehrig’s consecutive games, Beoman’s long jump, Hank’s career home run record…

Hey – ya’ reckon Garath is on the roids? Actually, he was. His deal with K-Mart artificially stimulated sales to achieve this record record. A bit of tricky accounting that The King didn’t have. Not to mention increased outlets for sales, higher population base etc…

At this point, I think that the JamBase staff is just getting off on how fucking stupid some of you people are. Yes – many, many of you are absolute idiots who shouldn’t be allowed to breed, let alone post on the net. I bet that JamBase has a pool there when stories like this go up, how long it will take some moronic ass-bag to say something ridiculous. The ignorance of those slamming Vegoose being some of the funniest and poorest thought posts I have ever read. You guys are precious.

What do you expect? Look at some of the profiles of some of the people. It all adds up. I do however think there is a big difference between being close minded or ignorant and just flat out hating or disliking something. I dislike a lot of things, if you knew me you would know I am very far from being close minded.

I think some of the people who are so angry about some of the responses should recognize that these are not personal attacks against them. I am not attacking anyone who likes Garth or thinks this article is important. I have come to this site to read more about music that ISN'T reported on by mainstream media.

Was it really necessary to print the Garth article here? Maybe. Did it deserve a lot of the negative response that it received? You betcha! Do you think maybe some of the JamBase staff knew this in advance and really didn't care what kind of responses came out of the wood work? Abso-frikin'lutely!

Music is an industry. JamBase, no matter how non-mainstream their pretense is still part of that industry.

Articles like this should produce a good amount of Garth bashing and that's a good thing. It's an oppurtunity for us all to stand together and point the finger and say, "This guy sucks!" (Good for him for reuniting NGR but that doesn't undo all the bad songs I've had to hear over and over again.

What's wrong is all the whiney babies saying "This doesn't belong on Jambase!" or "This is another example of J-base catering to the corporate world!" LAY OFF THE HIPPIE LETTUCE! That shit is making you paranoid.

Me & a friend were discussing last night why Elvis is the King. The conclusion that I came up with was that he was kind of like the first ganster rapper. He took music that was considered taboo by mainstream America and presented it in a way that made all the kids go crazy. Then he gets a lot of money and fame and he goes nuts! Absolutely hilarious to see what happens when you give a redneck a lot of money. Homeboy would fly all of his friends out to Denver to eat sandwiches made out of hollowed out loafs of bread filled w/ peanutbutter, bananas and bacon. He had a pet monkey named Scatter that would terrorize guests at his house. They found DOZENS of different pharmies in his system during the autopsy including medication people took for excessive body odor. He would inflict injuries on himself just so he could go to the doctor for another script. Even if you don't like Elvis' music you can't deny the entertainment value of his character.

Personally I am glad to see this happen to Garth. Sure, he might be the reason that modern country heard on the radio is so cheesy but there are a handful of others who also contributed to that. When I was a kid, I owned and still own all of Garth Brooks records. I knew the lyrics to every song. I might not have listened to those records for over a decade now but undoubtly they are part of the reason I love bluegrass and older country as much as I do these days. Hell, I sing and play guitar in a country band! Garth Brooks, Alan Jackson, Clint Black, Randy Travis, that was the down home shit I was raised on! Those songs take me back to another time. Whoo Garth!

Flame on!!! But my quick read only underscores my greatest fear -- musical ignorance. Rants that lump Garth with Britney Spears prove you've never listened to Garth. Garth is phenomenal, and his influence on country was Elvis-like in proportion. C&W has never been the same, and no one can hold a candle to him. I've seen 136 Dead, 26 Phish, 20 DSO, around 20 Trey shows, and hundreds of others. I've seen Garth only once, and would go again in a heartbeat. Pure class and talent. This is music, people -- the closest thing to Dead in Country -- and you demean him by broadbrushing him with Britney. Good God, find somewhere else to troll...

It's bad enough that "jam" is nearly gone, but puhleeze -- can we lose the ignorance?

A HUGE amen to that one keenan41 on all points. I find it incredibly hypocritical to be reading these posts from people bashing AN ENTIRE GROUP of people to defend one person that really doesn't matter to most of us on this site. I'm tired of people telling others to keep an open mind. We are adults (at least most of us). We are entitled to our opinions. I don't particularly care for Garth Brooks. Now I discover that Garth Brooks played with certain people and surpassed Elvis as best-selling solo artist. Well on that hand, NO, I still don't care for Garth Brooks. I think the assumption that people would change their opinion of something they like or don't like based on this news article and other information, is indicative of being pretty freakin clueless and shallow. If that is your impetus for changing your opinions in life, then you are pretty phukin stupid.

I'd like to also add, that, Elvis sold more records relative to the population of the country, (and World for that matter), as the population of the country has probably doubled or tripled since Elvis's playing days...So, if someone sold a million records in 1960, there's no comparison to selling a million records in 2007. (although it's still quite an accomplishment) Great feat by Garth, but Elvis is still king, and was recently annnounced as the highest paid "Dead Celeb"

i, if any on this forum, (with the sentence, "i don't give a shit about garth brooks or whether he's news worthy on a site like jb") made it explicit that i was not interested in changing anyone's opinion on garth brooks; i really don't care one way or the other how you feel about him or his record sales. personally, i'm apathetic with regard to mr. brooks - unless he's naked. i simply asked if anyone knew that certain jam luminaries supported garth's cause. a “yes, blah blah blah” or “no, blah blah blah” was the purpose of my post.

playing 6 degrees of garth brooks and extrapolating that into some ridiculous form of logic, how dose that make sense (other than it boosts your ego)! it directly contradicts everything i wrote. oh, and before ridiculing someone’s grammar, LEARN TO F**KING READ!

uscgamecocks4life, I don't think the most recent posts were an affront to you. Dope smoking does result in paranoia. Lay off the weed for a week and then read our posts. Also grammar is very important. Anyone with real job making a lot of money will attest to that. Oh, and I like Sam Bush and Jerry Douglas... I still couldn't care less for Garth Brooks. Love or hate Garth all you want, it will not change my opinion of you or him. Now relax and for God's sake stop caring around a poster that says, "cocks". It’s hard to respect anyone that is doing that, male or female.

CockPosterHolder, I don't really think I contradicted what you said. No, I don't realize who he's toured or recorded with because I don't like him, never listened to him. I guess I'm ignorant. You were the 2nd one to bring up Sam Bush, Douglas etc so my response wasn't directly aimed at you but across this entire discussion on the board. Also, I got the modus tollens wrong (it's 8th grade logic), so my ego is somewhat deflated right now. But like I said 6 degrees doesn't always work. Here's a nice one.... its actually 8 degrees....E Van Halen played a riff for Michael Jackson, who did a song with McCartney, who played with George Harrison, who was in a love triangle with Clapton, who played with BB King, who played with Phish, who played with Bela, who played with Sam Bush. Therefore, I like Van Halen (or not).

hahaha

sorry for the misdirected hostility... bad day at work, i guess.

is that original vh, the dave vh, or the current vh. if it's the current one than i suggest adding evh impregnated valerie bertinelli who spawned wolfgang vh who replaced michael anthony. also evh has had the same hip surgery as pete townshend who along with george harrison dug ec out of his drug induced depression in the 70s (rainbow concert) and has also played with david bowie who discovered stevie ray vaughan (check the credits on the let's dance album) and has sex with mick jagger who plays with keith richards who was on bb's last album... therefore's van halen (minus sammy and with or without ma) is alright in my book

Jambase likes posting my comments twice, whether they're back to back or 34 minutes apart. Weird. I'm just having fun with this thread as my work days are dragging. I apologize to everyone for any type of misdirected hostility. I kinda like the 6 degrees of EVH.

you also have to put this into perspective. There is alot more people in the world today than there was when elvis was around, this accomplishment isnt as meaningful as elvis' record.

Garth Brooks is the epitome of great music. for all of you close minded ignorant music snobs who only listen to jam bands and are convinced all music is derived from jam bands...here is a history lesson: Garth Brooks is the best musician in the last 30 years and his record sales prove it. His music has inspired many of the greatest bands around and continues to inspire the fusion between rock, country, and bluegrass. he is music. grow up. wake up off your futon. wash your poncho. put on a cowboy hat and tune in to the greatest musician of our generation.

I'd like to add to the post about Elvis seling to a smaller population. He also did have an exclusive distribution deal with Walmart. Brooks signed an exclusive deal with them in 2005. Since then, he's re-released material, sold singles, box sets etc. I bring this up because during the past week, there have been new reports associated with the Eagles selling 700+K albums in the first week of release exclusively with Walmart. Digging deeper into that number, it appears retail chains such as Virgin have bought the album in bulk and sold it back to the public for a marked up price. The number of albums sold is in question due to this. So my question is, in the 2 years of an exclusive distribution deal with Walmart, how inflated are Brooks' sales numbers?

GARTH BROOKS IS IN NO WAY ORIGINAL OR INFLUENTIAL. HE KILLED COUNTRY MUSIC AND LED IT TO THE TRASH PILE THAT IT RESIDES IN TODAY. POPPY BS COUNTRY SONGS NOW SPEW FROM ARTISTS WITH NO TALENT LIKE A FOUNTAIN BECAUSE OF THIS GUY. I COMPLETELY EXPECT THE MAINSTREAM AMERICAN TO EAT UP THIS CRAP, WE ARE TRAINED NOT TO THINK BY OUR MEDIA. GARTH BROOKS IS FURTHER PROOF THAT AMERICA TOP 40 CULTURE IS A BARREN WASTELAND OF CRAP. FRIENDS IN LOW PLACES NEARLY DROVE ME TO SUICIDE IT WAS PLAYED SO MUCH IN MY SMALL TOWN. IT STILL MAKES ME WANT TO VOMIT. GUY IS NOT EVEN A REAL FUCKING COWBOY. COUNTRY MUSIC HAS BEEN DEAD FOR SOME TIME. GARTH NAILED THE MO='FUCKIN COFFIN ON THAT SHIT SOME TIME AGO.

i was hoping this turned would have turned into a van halen discussion by now...

so who cares as to whom is more marketable, g or E, some d-bag financial analyst? sales are hardly indicative of quality or content. so maybe both had a few decent albums and really connected with their core audience... that's were they made the bulk of their sales. but what really put them over the top is the ridiculous amount of shitty compilations out there. the reason that everyone's panties are in a bunch here is bc there are more worthless garth and Elvis greatest hits sold each year than anyone else. i'd like to know from a strict album based perspective, barring compilations, whose album catalog has sold the most... the beatles, stones, zep, floyd, garth, elvis, brittney? my guess is van halen!

Dude, I'm sitting here reading all of these messages and realizing not all, but most of you don't even know garth brooks. Maybe you should look up some of his music and listen to it and concerts and watch them. Realize he was an entertainer to; he didn't just top the charts in country; he topped the charts in rock and pop to. To top it off, he was mostly known for the show he would put on during concerts. He's sold concerts out faster than any other artist of all time. And to compare him to britney spears or backstreet boys, thats a joke. If you were lucky enough to ever go to one of Garths concerts, you wouldn't see just girls or boys screaming in the front rows (like at backstreet boys or britney spears), you had variety; the whole family was there, even the gram and pop man. This guy got all of you off your seat. So, It definitely is news, but not surprising if you know garth. Come on I'm sure you all know 'Friends in Low Places'. 123 million and still on the rise!!!!
