Kayce said: "So, if they build it, I know I will come. But, talk of ticket sales, cash flow and groundless speculation about the future aren't for the fans. One thing I do know is that I got to see Daft Punk in that fucking Pyramid and that alone is good enough........One More Time."

nicely done aaron. for having your attention diverted amongst worldly debauchery, shooting video and catching some flops, this is a damn good writeup. Again, not kissin ass, but there was perfect mix of first-person experience and your analog breakdown....so, were you pimped backstage when you saw that girl go down during RATM or were you right up in the mix?

Great writeup and photos! Had a blast this year as with the past two! ... It's definitely changed over time - wish they'd bring back the stadium and the vaudeville tent, but hey- minor complaints. Bringing in the harder acts on Saturday changed the crowd quite a bit ... something about having Cypress Hill yelling "shoot 'em up" repeatedly and watching hundreds of people holding finger pistols into the air kinda killed my buzz a little, but we just wandered around and mingled for awhile ($7 Sierras x15 = $105, anyone?). Umphrey's latenight killed it, as can be imagined. Sunday felt more like past years, and it felt gooood. All in all, I must say it's been a blast to have been a part of this desert fest since its start.

Happened to be in line with Dan and Steve from ALO for the front car of the "Manhattan Express" coaster at New York New York on Monday afternoon ... heard amazing things of Las Tortugas and think I might try something new next year. Wasteland Vegas or Yosemite (and a mini-High Sierra) .... hrmmmm ;-) Maybe both?

Apparently this was the French Duo's last Pyramid show and all I know is I'm glad I didn't miss it. I've seen a lot of psychedelic shit in my day but I've never seen anything like Daft Punk. Robots are real, don't forget it.

Didn't goto the festival, but went to late night shows all 3 nights. Moe wasn't "bad", but they didn't really do anything special and it got a little dull at times. Umph put on the BEST umphreys show i'v ever seen on saturday night (plus, being from chicago, I was bumping into people I went to highschool with almost 10 years ago). STS9 on sunday night was quite possibly the most energetic crowd I'v ever seen in my life (not sure why, but there were alot of friendly people with runny noses dancing their asses off). All in all, I had a great time, and hope that the festival returns next Halloween so I can make it a 4 year tradition of only attending the late night shows.

ALSO -- I loved the layout and the sound at the Joint at the Hard Rock Hotel, however, didn't like the fact that they had more security than the Las Vegas airport, and apparently, your not allowed to sit on the ground, lean against the wall, or get drunk at that venue. Only saying this because I saw 3 different people get tossed, each for one of those "Joint" offenses, and in all 3 cases there honestly was no need to kick any of the 3 people out. The Hard Rock is also the trendiest place I'v ever been to in my life. I walked in and for some reason though I was at the MTV awards or something. Although I tried to dress a little nicer than I normally do, I couldn't help but look like a total scumbag walking in there (I guess I just can't shop and Kohls and party at the Hardrock).

As for Daft Punk.......that was sensory overload! Possibly some of the craziest shit I've ever seen... But, what the hell are those guys doing in that pyramid??? Washing dishes???

ScIFreak, you are a fucking moron. talking shit about a place that you were not even at and furthermore, you claim you got on the Daft Punk bandwagon early by seeing them in 99 "when no one knew who they were". Their debut came out in '97 and they were all over the place that year, you dumbass were two years late thinking you found the next big thing, wanker....

All and all, the lineup looked sweet. good coverage crew.

To the fans who went to Vegoose that didn't at least try to catch Blonde Redhead or Iggy Pop.........You fucked up.

SCIfreak, please don't be bitter b/c your band broke up. If sci was still together I bet you they would be playing sat night. But they got too techno and Nershi left...so Daft Punk plays. Daft Punk would have kicked the shit out of the blue grass-techno cheese was putting out anyway.

there you go jambase, keep promoting mainstream bands that dont need promoting... Nice little PR talk at the beggining... I dont want to hear it. keep being so nice, and slavishly open minded. Just ignore the musical values that got you to music festivals in the first place. Before you know it you will be at an emo show(or some other new contrived trend manufactured by the corporate music/fasion industry), and liking it... Lets face it, daft punk doesnt care about thier instruments, they loop and play samples. queens of the stoned age, all im going to say is my garbage disposal is more musical than they are. Muse, a highschool jazz band could play any of thier songs, they are all straight 4/4, and a little emo to boot. The shins, well thier just as useless and uninspiring as muse. To my knowlege the only people who listen to these bands are ugly college school girls who got thier braces too late, hate themselves for it so they lock themselve in thier dorm room and cry to this music. Public enemy, what can i say, flavor flav cracks me up. Ill allow it for comedy relief... That leaves one headlining band that seems sincere about thier music. ratm, uses thier songs as a vehicle to ship out thier political views, which i agreenwith mostly, and thier anger at a fucked up system that has invisible, figurative handcuffs on the brainless population at large. They pass, not for thier musicianship but for the fact that they actually seem to give a shit about what they are doing. The pre-adult-emo bands like muse and shins shouldnt have been allowed through the music fest doors let alone have such a large write-up in the jamband communities most read website. Lastly, look at the poor coverage Umphreys got. When it comes to technical prowess on the instruments, no other band there, including moe., can hold a candle to thier abilities. Yet, the coverage jambase gives them is disgraceful. Especially the coverage of thier festival apearences. Last week i saw them in boston. They covered shine on you crazy diamond. Perfect. Name another band on the scene today that could pull it off as well as um did. They deserve way more credit then they are getting. Every show they do is an intense musical accomplishment. Kind of how zappa's shows were. Not quite that sophistocated yet but they are damn close. So, there you have it. Those are the reasons why i dissapointed with jambases coverage as of late. Dont be fooled. The mainstream bands and more importantly thier corporat overlords want more than anything, access to our music loving community. Pay attention, notice how hard they are trying to herd us towards thier useless, uninspiring bands. Im done, proceed with the crying...

Scifreak - i think the name says it all, but i'm not one to poop on others parades... whah there weren't enough jam bands (but then again: moe., Umph, STS9, ALO, Franti - seems pretty jam friendly to me... go bitch somewhere else)... seriously dude, come on, talking shit and not even there? By the way, i was there and daft punk was the sickest shit i've seen in a long long while... (right up there with Volta, Arcade Fire, MMJ, and the last Panic run - those all being the best shows i've seen this year). This one of the most enjoyable, diverse festivals i've been to, and seems like a whole lot of peeps enjoyed themselves. I'm sure you've got plenty of SCI bootlegs to drink your haterade to, why bring it here?

Sounded like a great time, yet I am glad I didn't go. I went the first two years, and it only seems to be falling apart even further with less and less each year. I always love how musicians throw down in the "city of entertainment" but this year's festival seemed a lil' light. I would love to see all the bands that played, but I could definitely pass up rubbing elbows with some of the fans that I am sure were there this year (input, anyone?). No offense, I listened to this music when I was younger (P.E, C.H, RATM, etc) but I am probably too mellow to be bashin' around to it now. There was a ton of bands there that I would have LOVED to see, but then again I have seen them all. No mention of ALO? These guys are a great diverse, tough band. They work there fucking asses off, and over the last few years they've proven to be one of the better bans out there. I grew up in Yosemite (area), so this year I went to the Evergreen....perfect. Mellow, awesome music, friendly people, great vibes, endless positive thoughts. I am sure many minds were changed this year about ever going to Vegas for the Halloween weekend???

Delaneyira: all those band you like so much: Umph, moe etc, they get so much press on JamBase, i think it's great they give other types of music coverage. I was into jam bands many years ago, yes Umph are incredibly technically proficient, but what these headliners brought was a different vision with massive stage presence, and a huge sound. whatever, it's all personal taste, i find Umph, moe. etc to lack soul, they can play scales but to me music is much more than just scales, listening to QOTSA or Muse dig into dark pockets of madness does it for me, it might not for you, but that's part of the fun, it would be a boring world if we all liked the same music... lay off the preaching, it's not very becoming.

delaneyira, you talk a good game about technical skills and whatnot in bands but have you actually listened to battles. have you heard their new album "mirrored"? i think it's a safe bet that 9 out of 10 fans of either umphreys or sts9 will dig them. if you would have heard them (pending you didn't forget to take your Midol) you would'nt have gone on that pissy diatribe talking shit on JamBizzase.

just a few criticisms, i'll try to make them constructive, first off, please try to get more than one person to cover a festival. its just too hard to be everywhere at once and you end up getting only a brief writeup of each band, second, you wrote that the late night options were overwhelming, this year there were less latenights than ever, you mentioned burlesque shows and cirque du soleil, really?! you can see that anytime you go to vegas! "The idiot factor was almost nil", - ha, I find that hard to believe, with mosh pits, and chicks going down like sacs of potatoes, and gangsta rap, sounds like the idiot factor was off the charts, you wrote this lineup was diverse but I would call it more mainstream than ever, and no i'm not going to whine about my favorite band not being there, I hope everyone had a great time, I just dont understand daft punk, seems like some super repetetive shit, but to each thier own...as long as you had a good time, thats all that matters.

There was just very little hear to get behind. I just gambled and saw Umphrey's at night. What a waste. A bunch of bands that play the same set every night withe same comments between songs.

Moe, Umphrey's, STS9 can at least play 4 or 5 shows in a row without repeating a song.

The record pushers are dying anyway because clones like these all steal their records leaving only the bands that can take it live able to make a living. Bands stop touring when they play the same set with the same hits every nights.

Posers will come and go, but a band like Bisco will survive simply because they can play well enough to fill a concert even if their albums stop selling and all you slaves to corporate rock stop paying attention

wheres the funk? ...not at this festival.

I just saw two of THE MOTET's halloween shows. They covered Jamiroquai. It was one of the sickest, and funkiest shows i have ever seen. Imagine the RnB disco / groove / soul / funk of Jamiroquia...but then add in Herbie Hancock like on keys and lots of in the pocket , syncopated, group improvisational grooves. BAD ASS!

Good gosh folks! Maybe the Base is or isn't covering festies worthy of coverage in the opinion of some long time readers... but lets save it for another thread. As far as the article itself I thought it was awesome! I heard about a lot of the bands I wanted to hear on (and yes, many bands i wanted to hear on i did not) but more than that, I think Kayceman did a great job putting you in the mind of an attendee with an understanding of the crowd, the atmosphere and all that ruckus. Personally, I think the site is changing for the better by staying true to its roots while moving forward by tackeling more ground. Great review Kayceman!

I think this was a great article with some awesome pics. music has no bounds. you say it is mainstream. I think when something gets popular someone calls it mainstream. I was not at this festival but i have seen most of these bands and there were a lot of great bands at this fest. Just to clear things up- hippie/jamband festivals are now in the mainstream. wsp moe um string cheese have all become as mainstream as anything eles. I give props to any artist trying to break new ground. If you like the music listen to it if you don't like the music don't listen to it but stop hating. Peace and love

I knew this thread would be a winner. As always good pictures, pretty good review and hilarious commentary. Pretty weak on the review of the late night shows, which is where the shit gets crazy anyways. The part about a grown up fest was a bit condescending and beneath Kayceman's typical prose.

I would go see Daft Punk based on the stellar reviews, but after listening the music it really does not do much for me. That light show must be really trippy? I'm only basing this statement on the little knowledge I have of Daft Punk, but I remember lots of robot sounds and sampling being pretty common place in the 80's.. Anyone remember break dancing or the Soundtrack to Beverly Hills Cop?". Looks like a good time, though not worth the price of admission for me.

Such a great review. This festival just went over extremely well for me. The vibe was great...ALL the acts I saw put on amazing sets as well. You can talk shit about 1 band on this fest or them all, but unless you were there you would not have seen how everyone at the fest was just a fan of good music. Everything said about Daft Punk is true. You can hate dance music or love it, but after you see these guys, you'll know they are the best live production out there right now. You know when you are at a show and you just keep hitting the guy next to you thinking "i can't believe they just did that?" well thats how Daft is for EVERY second of their set. and on any other fest RAGE and MUSE and IGGY would have been that band as well....

big thanks to superfuly for putting on such a great display of live music.

Delaneyira – Daft Punk just play loops? Well, go out and get a drum machine and a MIDI keyboard and tell me how easy it is to do. You are talking about things you don’t know about.

As for “ugly college school girls who got thier braces too late, hate themselves for it so they lock themselve in thier dorm room and cry to this music”. When you are so quick to judge others, do not be shocked when others judge you in the same way. Speaking of which, learn to spell.

Pretty cool article, really nice pics. IMO, being open minded doesnt mean you must open up to the Vegoose line up. If you dont like some of this music, you just dont like it. I really like Blonde redhead, but would rather see other bands live and keep BR in my player at home. And thats all fine and good....there are MANY Halloween events and shows to choose from all over the country. Superfly events arent the end all of festivals. Dont like their style? Go support other promotions! Do some grass roots research and get in on the new blossoms! If Superfly has become compost to you, there are other seeds being planted elsewhere. Go enjoy them flowers!

"I don't see how someone could listen to 40's theme and say Umphrey's sucks."

That song takes technical ability, but it blows as a song. Sure, they have talent, but they're soulless and they suck at jamming. It's endless fucking noodling. The shred they do isn't even cool. It's straight up shred for shred's sake that would impress any non-guitar player (and any shitty guitar player). They are lame as hell. I really can't stand their music or their fans who believe they're listening to the most "insane jams" or "incredible solos." Grow a pair of ears and realize that these tools are horrible. I could ramble on and on.

Okay, I can stand people defending bands they like, but when you go as far as to bash the talent/ingenuity of a band like Umphrey's McGee, that's honestly quite ridiculous. If you can truthfully say that you think UM has no talent, can't jam, and can't make good songs, you should really, really just give up on music. I myself am a musician, and I'm no fool when it comes to such a thing, there has never been a band like UM, and there never will be, they consistently rage it, and they are outrageously tight, and to say they are soul-less (dont remember who said it, don't care), is just absurd, I've met them, they are all real nice, smart guys. Now go ahead and bash what I've said here, and then say your band is better, but I've put in my two cents. By the way, you couldn't have paid me to go to a music festival featuring 5 jambands.

This year I am putting money on Wakarusa 08. Its all about the line-up, and this years will be one of the best. It will compare to the bonnaroo 02. I'm not upset with Vegoose with the acts they choose, I just won't put money down to watch them. The setlists look water down, tickets were costly, and the vibe of the jam band festival sence is getting worse. Get tickets early for Waka 08

Drewedmo, I'm pretty sure I went to a ARU show this year, February? And last year, July or August......

I like to read these festival reviews even if I wasn't interested in going in the first place. I'm east coast and the Vegoose lineup gave little incentive for me to go that far, except maybe GFK who is in my opinion the greatest and most original mainstream rapper today. I hope everyone who went had a good time. That said my stomach is beginning to churn because of the comments, specifically from yemmw, about UM. Pay no mind to this hater. Sure Bayliss and Cinninger aren't Pat Metheny or Eric Johnson, but I guarantee that yemmw and any other punkass naysayer who plays music wouldn't last a minute with UM on stage if their life depended on it. Sorry, but I really appreciate all of those guys and the time they've put in with their instruments. I'd probably cut off my left testicle with a plastic butter knife to have the chance to jam with UM onstage. Umphreaks Unite!

scifreak has 40gigs of phish and has never seen them in concert. its hard to sit in the same car for 16 hours with him when all he talks about is the sweet song we just listian to. he has no tast in good phish songs. all he dose is rag on other peoples parade and mmw kicks ass live he has never evan seen mmw live so i have no clue how he pulled that bull shit out of his ass. scifreak needs to relize that superfly is sold out. i saw commersals for bonnaroo on m.t.v. scifreak has only been to bonnaroo and no other festivlas so he has never seen whats relly good about the smaller more intamit shows. and if jam base had spell cheak it would make me fell better about my writing

YEMMW-Wait- the song takes technical ability, but they have no ability? How does that work? UM may not have vocals that do a lot for me, but those boys can certainly play guitars. Even if you don't like them they definetly have chops. Let me guess you are projecting and in reality you are the shitty guitar player. Thought so.

I had a great time at this fest. The late nights were fun as hell and the day sets were great too. It was hard to get to the fest earlier then five each day because of the late night festivities. But I still caught Cypress Hill, MIA, Queens of the Stone Age, Iggy and the Stooges, Umphreys, Thievery Corp., The Shins, moe., Rage and of course DAFT PUNK !

I wouldnt normally go to see most of these bands and I am glad I got a chance to see most of them. I spent a lot of $, but hey Vegas isnt cheap. I hope they have it again next year. Ill definately go. But bring back Panic.

Great article, makes me wish we'd gone to Vegoose again this year. Instead we threw our own little music and arts fest called HALLOLUNA in preparation for next summer's sostice festival on our farm in Kempton, PA. I love that the coverage has expanded to video, especially artist interviews. With all the hype surrounding the Daft Punk set, I would like to see some video footage with cuts that accentuate the artists not distract from them. I don't like being so critical, but I do have experience in the production field, and I know that fans want to watch these and say WOW what a great performance, not WOW what a great editing job. At least it's available in whatever form and I'm grateful, thank you. Having said that, hire more professionals to shoot, we need the work!
