Widespread Panic Howl At Supermoon With Werewolves Of London

This past Saturday night jam titans Widespread Panic brought their current tour to scenic Starlight Theatre in Kansas City, MO. The band played under the "Supermoon" which Wikipedia describes as, a "coincidence of a full moon or a new moon with the closest approach the Moon makes to the Earth on its elliptical orbit, resulting in the largest apparent size of the lunar disk as seen from Earth."

Widespread Panic had a few treats in store for their Kansas City fans as they dusted off the slow version of live staple "Porch Song," the WAR cover "Slippin' Into Darkness" and Tom Waits' "Goin' Out West" all within the second set. For the encore, WP's LD incorporated a photo of the "Supermoon" on a screen behind the band as they ran through original "Greta" and a cover of "Werewolves Of London" by Warren Zevon.

John Bell and Co. first performed "Werewolves Of London" on October 19, 1985 and it remained in fairly heavy rotation through 1988. It was then shelved until Halloween '92 and was busted out again on Halloween '93 and Halloween '94 as well as for a multi-band encore at the Oak Mountain stop of the H.O.R.D.E. tour in 1993. Widespread Panic covered "Werewolves" twice in 1995 and once in 1996 before it was again put in mothballs until 2002. One performance in 2002 was followed by another two renditions in 2007 and one in 2008. Before Kansas City, "Werewolves" was last played on Halloween in 2011. Saturday night's version was only the sixth Panic "Werewolves Of London" in the past 15 years.
