Phil Lesh & Friends :: 10.20 :: Glens Falls Civic Center :: Glen Falls, NY

Anastasio & Lesh :: 10.20 by A.M. Saddler/phillesh.net
If there ever was an ideal setting for it to happen, this was it. If ever there was ideal timing for it to happen, it was now. And if ever there was a man who could save the face of the gigantic pond that he created - the same one which eventually sent him to sleep with the Phishes - it could only be him. Trey Anastasio, former Phish frontman, has been out of the spotlight for the past eight months and finally got his feet wet again this past Saturday with the help of his friend Phil Lesh. This was his first stage appearance outside of a one song guest spot with the Dave Matthews Band this summer at the Saratoga Performing Arts Center. Rumors ran wild for weeks that The Bad Lieutenant would return to the stage at the Glens Falls Civic Center, the site of Phish's historic Halloween '94 concert where they played the entire White Album by The Beatles. It made perfect sense. Since his very public arrest last December for drug possession and driving under the influence, Anastasio has lived in relative peace and quiet in Saratoga, NY, only minutes away from the Civic Center.

Phil Lesh and Friends has recently been touring the country with a new lineup of Jackie Greene, Larry Campbell (Bob Dylan, Levon Helm), John Molo and Steve Molitz (Particle). After a rather forgettable show Friday at Mohegan Sun Casino, I just could not allow myself to miss Saturday. Within five minutes of parking across the street from the venue I spotted Phish lyricist and lifelong Anastasio friend Tom Marshall picking up his tickets at the box office. Moments later, I ran into Phish archivist Kevin Shapiro and struck up a conversation. Both realizing what was on deck, bubbling with excitement, we briefly exchanged pleasantries and prepared to head in. Game on.

As I entered the venue, which is a typical, Northern NY, medium-sized hockey arena, I could only think of Halloween 1994. I could only think of Anastasio, and what he had created like a mad scientist, only to be killed by his creation in the end. Or so we thought. Or so it might have been.

Larry Campbell :: 10.20 by A.M. Saddler/phillesh.net
Within moments of glancing around, IT appeared - The Languedoc, one of Trey's custom made guitars named for its creator, Phish soundman, Paul Languedoc. It sat on the guitar stand on stage, the very spot it held almost thirteen years ago this Halloween. That alone was enough to ignite the first spark of what would surely prove to be an epic night.

As the band hit the stage, Anastasio looked out into the audience. Dressed in a comfortable tee shirt with his patented long sleeve Henley underneath, he simply smiled. "Alabama Getaway" kicked things off with "Pride of Cucamonga" following. After "Friend of the Devil" and "Deep Elem Blues" one of the first set highlights was "Deal" where Anastasio really seemed to settle in and shake off the months of dust that had been accumulating on his shoulders, taking charge with a confident, soaring solo that was the first time in a long while I've managed to close my eyes, smile uncontrollably, and hear the familiar tone I grew up with.

Welcome back, Big Red.

Several other things were also apparent in the first set. Anastasio had all eyes on him, and whether it was intentional or the energy of the moment, he seemed to be three times as loud as anyone else in the mix. The undeniable example was the set closing "Bertha." When Anastasio stepped up to sing the line, "Test me, test me / Why don't you arrest me?" the place absolutely exploded. Trey got a good laugh out of it, too. I don't know what else to say except that it felt good, and I can only imagine how it felt for Anastasio.

Anastasio, Lesh, Greene :: 10.20 by A.M. Saddler
The second set was typical Lesh, bobbing and moving, high and low, dark and light. They opened with Anastasio's "Shine," and whether you think it's a pop tune, a disaster or just cheesy, on this night it managed to shine bright enough to nearly melt the ice under the floorboards. One felt lucky to simply be watching Anastasio sing it again, especially complimented by a fierce guitar solo. A rather ballsy "Viola Lee Blues" > "Cumberland Blues" sandwich morphed back and forth into one another after each verse, and featured some very good playing from all. Newcomer Jackie Greene, rumored to be sick, seemed to fade out of existence in this set. Not that many even noticed. All eyes were on one man.

"Dark Star" enveloped "Wharf Rat," a song I later learned Anastasio was dying to play this night, and featured Campbell and Anastasio trading solos like the professionals they are. Also prevalent were the underlying themes of arrest, jail, judges and the like that Lesh incorporated into the setlist construction. On this night, nothing seemed accidental. Like the three-headed snake, "Help" > Slipknot!" > "Franklin's Tower" to close the show. Each member played with reckless abandon, especially Anastasio, who dug-in as if there was no tomorrow. It's also worth noting that Phil Lesh was named honorary mayor for the day, in which his first act was to issue a full pardon to Anastasio.

I'm not going to say this was the best show I've ever seen, but it sure felt like it. Public humiliation and disgrace turned into praise and adulation. Anastasio seemed to be shedding his winter cocoon, reemerging into the public eye with new bravado and an attitude that maybe even he forgot he had in him the last few years. Most importantly, he let his guitar do most of the talking. Whatever your stance on things, one thing was clear from the Glens Falls performance - Anastasio is clean, healthy and ready to once again take the plunge into music. With the one place that he often feels most comfortable, the place he finds sanctuary: the stage, taken away from him for so long he seemed genuinely at peace during this performance. After drowning in the pond he created, on this particular evening, Anastasio went from sleeping with the Phishes to rising like the redheaded Phoenix we all know he is. Welcome back Trey, we've missed you.

^I think this writer is going a little too far. I didn't go to the show, and I haven't heard the set either...but c'mon. This is just a stupid way to end an otherwise informative article. Tone it down a little, and maybe put down the pipe for a minute...

I'll tell you what. The last tour with Phil and the Duo, when Trey and Phil got together it was hit or miss. Sometimes it was so good and others like the Spac show were just not quite mixing. When I heard Trey was playing the Civic center I was afraid he was going to Jersey up Phil. Well that did not happen. It was insane how good this show was.Wouldn't it be great if he could hold together enough to bring the boys back?! aw who cares this show was sick!!!!

This is Brian Bavosa, author of this article. In response to your Q:

"Was this a Trey review or a Phil & Friends review?"...I had included this paragraph before the article, but it was cut by the editors. I was told to make this a focus on TREY, and I felt that would be the most important thing that people were interested in/wanted to hear about. Be sure to read my PHIL review coming on Halloween...Hope this clears it up.

Author’s Note: This night, while being a Phil and Friends show, focuses on the return of one of the scene’s most important icons: Trey Anastasio. For further reading on Phil Lesh, please see our current feature, or be sure to check out my Halloween review coming next week…

this writer is not over exaggerating at all. 10/20/07 was one of the best concerts i have ever been to, musically and just plain energy wise. Granted i am 28, so i never saw the dead in there prime, let alone saw the dead when they were half way decent. But I saw phish in their prime and this phil and friends show with trey finally brought me back to those days of 97 and 98 for me. The shine to open the second set which is usually a song i have no interest in, was great. Seriously, all kidding aside trey took 6 or 7 of these songs into some amazing places. chills at least 7 or 8 times through out the night.

i would not say red is back. Lets just keep wishing he stays clean and stays on the program.

One line in the reveiw says it all "I'm not going to say this was the best show I've ever seen, but it sure felt like it." That is what is great about live music, it just depends on the mood. For anyone who loves Trey and Phish they probably almost had a heart attack for this. Myself, seeing phish 90+ times, altough none since 1997, I've really moved on a bit. Also, after seeing many incarnations of Phil and Friends, 50 shows or so and listening to the recording on the Archive I can definitely say this sounded good, but in know way is the best Phil show ever. Thats the beauty of live music, I can listen to the recording and make my opinion while someone else can make theirs. The one thing I can say is the current lineup of Phil and Friends gets better each show. Jackie Green is the find with this group, he's the noe they shold be talking about (although he was sick apparently that evening). He has allowed Phil to take some old great tunes and just do um up. I'll take Jackie's singing on Dead tunes over Trey any day of the week.

Thanks for the response Brian! Being a big fan of this lineup I guess I was hoping to hear a little more about how the songs flowed in and out of each other, what songs/melodies they teased, how many instruments Campbell played, etc. Since this was a one off show w/ an infamous guitarist just starting to re-emerge after difficulties in his life I can see why the editors want the focus on Big Red. I like Trey but after his last few albums and tours it's impossible for me to put him on the pedestal I used to.

I was at this show...I was going to see Phil really...I really had no interest in seeing Trey; however, Trey was tearing it up...the viola>cumberland>viola>cumberland>viola was insane, definitely the best part of the show...i did not really like how Trey was in the middle of everything..it kinda felt like he was stealing the show...do not get me wrong that the show was good and Trey played well, but I was not looking for it...the crowd was awesome though..during the band intros at the end of the show Phil had a huge smile on because of the crowd...that was awesome..

Good article but -- the Languedoc he's using now is NOT the one he used at Halloween 94. And I'm pretty sure you didn't "grow up" with his gnarly, dirty post-hiatus tone. But who cares, Trey played a show, and it certainly was very good. I really want to hear him with his own band doing his own stuff soon!

for a dude whose New York state's license plates read "TREY ME" for 7 years, I am officially geigh for Trey and Phish. I don't care how much people hate it. I don't care how much people hate jambase or BB for this review. THIS WAS BIG NEWS! This was a really big deal!

I have heard that the theme of most of the songs that night Phil picked up had to do w/ the law and/or police. Accordingly, Phil has a propensity for picking setlists that have a theme for where/who they're playing at/with.

thanks again for the good words. Kind of agreed though BB, it does get a tad sappy at the end for even me. Great nonetheless!

Trey was on fire, the show had many great moments... The crowd reaction in Bertha when Trey sang "test me test me why don't you arrest me" is amazing. We should all be appreciative that two of the best bands in our scene, The grateful dead and Phish, have members who are willing to colaborate and create great music... Good review but a little over the top.

I love phil and Trey and the music they have made together but one thing about his so called "first act" really burns me. Pardoning Trey. Gimme a break. How freaking rude and basically offensive i find this to be. Trivialising the fact that Trey was driving under the influence. Swerving all over the road potentially endangering himself and others. This is inexcusable and should be taken seriously. Not to be made into a big freakin joke. Guess Im kind of sensitive since I work as a paramedic here in NM and I see the results of DWI/DUI/substance abuse every day. Kind of sticks with you . Oh well my 2 c's.

if any of you met trey you would fall down and kiss his ass.screw 92,93, to say they never got better is redamndonkulous.make up your minds do you love him or hate him.i love him and im glad he is well.he has a sickness and selfish people cannot see that getting well is more important, being there for his family, more important, playing shows for ungrateful hippies, not.

Good show, definetly had its moments. Bertha, Deep Elem and Warf Rat was awesome. Trey singing his heart out. The crowd energy rocked. Trey is actually in key and mostly playing in time during this show. Vast improvement over the last Phil and Trey show I listened to. Man its good to hear Trey sound decent. You can tell he was singing with passion.

One thing that sticks out is how good Larry is. Same thing with the Vegoose shows last year. Larry brings the heat on guitar.

Good show, but the vocals are tough to listen to. Trey and Phil singing Bird Song is a travesty. Even with heart felt performance by Trey, Warf Rat was pretty bad when compared to the original. This show would have been better with more Jackie on vocals. The other Phil show reviewed on jambase had way better vocals. Keep on rocking Phil and Trey!!!

Trey fans need to not be so sensitive. There are only like three negative posts. That is pretty tame for jambase.

I was very fortunate to be at this show. trey really did wait to take the spotlight until near the end of the first set, then grabbed it and shone through most of the second set, before everyone ended in a cohesive, glorious Franklin's w/ Box of Rain Encore. If this is the sign of the new Trey, I'm very excited about the future.

SilentMark if you ever read this...i saw them a few times in 93 alot in 94 and a ton in 95. I thought there prime was 97 and 98. Thats my personal opinion, they brought the funk out, and it was sick. I love the funky pyite's, moma dances, ghosts, and tweezers, that was my thing. The shows in 93 - 94 were great but its when i was 14 when they happned, so i grew into a man listening and seeing this band. And even listening to tapes from 93 and 94 i still would take a 97 show or a 98 show. MAybe it was becasue 96 had nothing that great for me, that i thought 97 was amazing but i dont think so. Its an argument that could go on forever.

Just like the Grateful Dead...some people say 71-72 was there best years, others say 77, others love brent and have a few choice brent years that they said were the best.

Early 90s Phish was the shit for me. It was a wild time seeing them play stuff off of Nectar, while it was still their current album. You cannot compare the venues, either. I lost them at arena size, (too god damn big.)

Seeing them 3 nights in a row at the Beacon Theatre in '94 right when Hoist came out was ATOMIC. I thought they were going to make the crappy Capitol Theatre in Portchester, NY collapse in '93. Just my two cents from being there. I'm sure later 90s is loaded with great notes, too, I just missed seeing them in places where they could do barbershop with no mics.

In answer to Flat5's question: Trey was wearing jeans, short sleeve T shirt, long sleeve henley, and an anklet.

good article hate to see everyone is still ready to bash trey. this is phil's call, nobody else. I was there for holloween 94 and wish i could have been a part of the phil and phriends 07. when phil asks people to colaborate with him its about the music not about he said or she said.

The writer's right. This was an amazing, transcendent show. If it wasn't the best show I've ever seen, it was at least the best since Phish came back on New Year's Eve five years ago. Glens Falls! What a show to be at> I can just say I felt lucky to be there. Thanks Trey, Phil & Friends.

How about a Phil and Trey Band? Those two could do every Phish and Dead song and all of the covers. What is that 10,000 songs?

I would have to say that reading this article made me smile!! From the sounds of it, Trey could be back in all of his force, like the mid 90s, and the set list looked EPIC!! Does anyone have a copy of this show??

" After a rather forgettable show Friday at Mohegan Sun Casino "

I was at that show- it was not 'forgettable'........

I certainly wouldn't say it was an all-timer, but I though it was pretty solid from start to finish

Actually I found it to be one of the better Phil shows I've seen & I've seen him over the years with Joan, Chris, Trey, Warren....

I agree with some of the previous posters that the writer went a bit overboard with enthusiasm (undersandably so) But downgrading the previous show was not necessary

That being said...I'm glad Trey is back & apparantly healthy

This was the greatest show I have ever been too! Went on a little road trip with my friend Justin. Hit this show, then Syracuse, then next fri, sat, sun saw Ratdog. Anyway totally suprized that Trey was there. I am from Burlington, Vermont and know Phish very well. Dave Grippo, one of the Saxophonists on Trey's live album Plasma was my music teacher. Anyway just amazing. I mean Viola Lee Blues > Cumberland Blues > Viola Lee Blues > Cumberland Blues > Viola Lee Blues was just amazing. Unbroken Chain was amazing with a great Trey solo. One hick guys says to me " Hey man tell all your friends to get off the shit, back in the day all we used to do was drink, smoke weed, and take mushrooms. ONLY! fuck.

I agree LARRY CAMPBELL is awesome. He played fiddle, steel string, and I think mandolin in this show. Just wow. I saw him with Levon Helm band in San Fran a couple months back. Just awesome. Who are these people talking shit on trey. His style is holding those long notes, and sometimes being a beat back. Its called syncopation and is used in a lot of Jazz. Plasma was good. Bertha was awesome with Trey singing the lyrics. This is live music. I guess all the squares who watch all the t.v. expect everything to be perfect. WELL GUESS WHAT THERE IS AWKWARD SILENCES IN REAL LIFE!!!
