South Africa's Lucky Dube Murdered
Lucky Dube |
South African reggae superstar Lucky Dube was murdered yesterday (October 18) during an attempted carjacking in a suburb of Johannesburg, South Africa.
It appears Dube was dropping his son off at a relative's home when two armed men approached the car and opened fire. Dube's son was not harmed.
Known as "Africa's Reggae King," the 43-year-old began his career in the early 80s performing in the traditional Zulu mbaganga style before he was inspired to switch to reggae after hearing Peter Tosh's militant music.
Dube's songs were critical of South Africa's government but maintained a spirit of unity. Many of his Apartheid-era albums, Think About The Children and Prisoner amongst them, earned platinum status.
Dube is survived by his wife, Zanele, and seven children.
