Ben Combe Leaves Particle

Statement from Ben Combe, Particle Guitarist:

Ben Combe by Earl Gardner
The last year and a half has been an exciting and life changing period. Particle afforded me the opportunity to continue to live my dream. I am forever grateful to each of the members for the opportunities this journey has brought me. I have had the honor of playing throughout the country with some of my long time musical heroes of rock past, present and future. This is a part of my life and career that I will never forget.

With that said, it is with a heavy heart that I have decided to part ways with Particle to pursue a more collaborative musical direction. I have a deep respect and admiration for the group but for some time now I have felt that my interests, and the three original members' musical direction, no longer coincide. As much as Eric, Darren and Steve have welcomed me into the "Particle World," it has become clear that despite my involvement, our ideals of solidarity differ too much for me to continue to stay with the group.

The Particle fans have been nothing short of amazing, and I thank each one of you for the support, especially after I took the reigns of guitar after the departure of Scott Metzger. I sincerely hope that after the dust settles from my decision, that everyone involved will understand why I have come to this conclusion. The Particle fans' energy and caring has always been overwhelming and I look forward to experiencing additional time together in a new and exciting project in the very near future.

In closing, I want to assure each of you that this decision has come over months and months of soul searching; this was not decided over night. I have nothing but respect for Particle and more than anything, this decision was made as a matter of artistic principal and integrity. People change in a creative context as they do personally, and sometimes the best efforts are unable to sustain and refocus the relationship in such a way that everyone feels fulfilled.

It is my hope that this message allows everyone involved to take pause for reflection and regain momentum for future positive musical endeavors.

I look forward to seeing each of you very soon.

With Peace, Love and Music
Ben Combe

Apparently he's been thinking this about this for months and months. That is not a good sign for the Particle People. I liked the heavier direction Ben was trying to pull the band towards. Apparently they are looking for someone to play second-fiddle to Molitz and be comfortable with that role.

Try again?

Musically spekin'...Metzger and Comb were a bit over Particles heads in the first place...thats what id say, anyhoo... My problem with Particle is that they have confused being cool and popular (for a sec) with being GOOD. This is usually somthing that happens to chicks but...whatever...im just sayin'... that Steve Moltz looked madd hung over at the Greek when he played with Phil...WHAT A ROCK STAR!!! WHAT A FUTURE!!!

Agree with you, EVIL Pumpkin. 5 or so years ago, I thought they had a lot of potential. I was wrong. Talented band, no doubt, but they seem pretty one dimensional. Not even in the same league as other trance-fusion bands, like STS9 or Bisco.

This is both good and bad, i really liked ben and thought he could push particle to the more organic jam-tronica sound i love but i guess he was leaning to much in another direction, and you cant stay where your'e not happy or else you end up with GNR syndrome! The good is i would be very happy to see where ben goes from here and check out the new band, if they come to the southwest.

The 3RD GUITAR PLAYER to leave Particle because they couldn't deal with Steve's crap> Everyone thinks because he looks like Jesus that he is a good guy. The guy is a back stabbing prick who always hated the Dead heads and then sucked ass when it helped his career. I know many of you friends will back STeve up, but seriously 3 guitar players leave the band and they've never been the same since Charlie left.

Word, Ben is definitly a moral guy. And most humble of all of those dudes. I can see how the egos would drive them apart. It's obvious he was commited to coming up with his "bros" in particle, but they aren't about being "bros". I hope Ben doesn't drift between bands like Charlie and Scott have since they left. I'd love to see him as the solid leader of a band.

Okay first I have to laugh at all of you putting Steve down. First... to TheGreat EVIL Pumpkin of FUNK, Steve was about as hungover as you will ever have any fame beyond a message boards. Come on...the kid is siked he is playing these venues with a legend. I love how we all pretend we know what goes on behind closed doors. We don't. I know that Ben is the only one to really party in the band and that with Steve being handpicked to be Phil's keyboardist has to be rough for the other members. SO...if we are making educated guesses...

Probably money got thin due to the lack of touring, the other two members have dedicated more to the project and Ben needed to eat and not be unsure of his future.

moral oral, you make some good points. I don't think anyone is putting down steve's musical abilities. I just saw him kill it for 3 nights in Chicago. But anyone who has spent any time with him at all knows he's got a big ego, and likes to be the center of attention. I think Ben was definitly stating that he was in it for the band and certain other band members were in it for themselves. Some people here are just taking guesses, but certain others do have at least some inside info about the band. Believe what you want to believe, I think Ben is being pretty transparent about the whole thing. I'm happy to see him drawing so much love here on Jambase, I guess people really do just like to rip on particle, and not just their members.

Did anyone ever stop to think that chemistry is 'extremely' hard to find in music and in relationships? It's Rock -n- Roll....you live the dream while it lasts and thats all you can do. I wish steve darren gouldy and ben the best in their careers and whatever the future holds for them. I enjoy the music particle has created over the last 7 years from garciaesqe sounds of dave simmos to the shredding riffs bv the charlie hitchcock. It took me a while to adjust to Ben's style in particle but it also brought an always smiling face into the band and a new energy onto the stage. Hope to hear from all of you in the near future...

Steve looks like he's on heroin. He's all gaunt and his cheeks are sunken in. Ever notice how he always wears a long sleeve shirt? Hmmm.... Coincidence? Also...I agree. I deal with musicians ALL THE TIME!! None of the guys in Particle are anything but sincere and very easy going. I talked with Steve for 45 minutes about the dead and he loves it and really loves Phil! Stuck up, Rock Star? I hung with Darrin at Buring Man, way cool guy. These are real people. You must be on crack or have never actually talked to any of the members. Try dealing with a Jamaican Reggae band some time. Now that is difficult. So what!? People and musicians go their own way sometimes, lets not judge those they leave behind. Particle rips and so does Steve with Phil, do you think Phil has the time or energy to deal with somone that is a dick? To rip on someones personality that you don't even know sucks.

As far as "pating ways" statements... this one has fire.. "pursue a more collaborative musical direction" "despite my involvement, our ideals of solidarity differ too much" "It is my hope that this message allows everyone involved to take pause for reflection and regain momentum for future positive musical endeavors."

Are you kidding... he is calling Particle out!! Translation.. "Wake up and read this, no one wants to work with you" I read an interview with Charlie after he left... he said the band was asking him not to solo anymore.. and he took off... Someone is trying to drive the bus here and the guitar player don't like it... Good luck with your replacement (s)

This should do it for Particle, possibly the most tired act on the scene today. I was at their big Transformations show when they intro'd Metzger and Combe, and it was the least impressive Particle show I have ever seen. It was all about "forget Charlie, forget what you know about Particle, because this is the real Particle." Yeah, it was real....real boring.

After all the press and all the hype, Metzger bails after about a month, him being a smart guy and all. I knew then this band was dying a slow, public death. Now I/we know it's almost dead, we're so close, soon they will be gone forever and our scene will be all the better for it. public death.

Darren Pujalet is easily the best musician of all of them, just supertalented, Eric Gould is serviceable as long as you don't watch/listen to him for more than 10 seconds at a time, and Steve Molitz is great within the Particle realm but almost invisible/inaudible with Phil & Friends (especially comparing the three Warfield shows I saw in DEC 2004 with his work during the SB bowl show last month).

As far as rje182's comment....if you want to come down here to Los Angeles and talk that smack, you're invited. DSO is at The El Rey tomorrow and Saturday, me and all the dicks on the LA scene will be happy to prove your closed-minded ass wrong.

Particle is over and has been for awhile, it's just too bad they and the Particle People are the only ones who don't know it. What was the last major music festival they played? I wonder if they will even get it together for JITD next year. Over and out...stick a fork in them, Particle is done!

Not retarded, rejunkulous, but thanks for caring. I guess I just never heard any buzz about any of their recent festival appearances...probably because there was none. I guess they're still involved with some fests, but it's been a long way down since JITD 2005 and the days of blowing up Bonnaroo late nights way back when. I didn't see those nights in CHI like you did, but I saw the SB show and what I said is true. Molitz was invisible and many times inaudible. He doesn't really do much for P&F in my opinion, not like Page, Medeski, Barraco or even Mookie. Of course I agree that wasn't the case in 2004 and I guess it wasn't the case when you saw P&F recently.

Regardless, what happend with Hitchcock was red flag #1

The lacklusterness of Transformations was red flag #2

Metzger bailing after all the build up and hype of the Particle quintet was red flag #3

Combe leaving after all this evolution is red flag #4 and, and possibly could mark the end of Spacepronfunk as we know it. Grab a fork, stick it in....it's done.

Then again, my name isn't Molitz, Pujalet or Gould, so I could be wrong.

Some of you people are the ones that have the real problems. Having an opinion is one thing, but hiding behind your computer screens and posting rediculous, non-factual claims (ie Steve on drugs, and the guys being "dicks") is just lame. If you don't like their music, just stay away and support the music you do prefer. I'm more of a friend of these guys than a huge Particle fan, so I'm not acting as a "homer". Just sticking up for my boys. If your life was in the public spotlight what do you think people would post about you? Think before you type. I wish ALL of these guys the best of luck and whatever happens, I'm confident each one of them will find their way.

Have any of you people actually listened to Particle? Nevermind. The people who like them are probably out seeing more great music. Don't say shit about me. if you look. I don't ever write anything on jambase. This just caught my attention on day when i found a computer so i has to post. If they were so bad why would buckethead open for them; and then play with them; and then use that inspiration to create "Population Overdrive". thats a buckethead album for those of you who don't know. and don't even try to say buckethead sucks. One of the best guitarists out there as far as technical skill and uniqueness goes. I can't believe no one remembers the Particle/Buckethead shows. Particle was ,and hopefuly will, still be an amazing band. And as for Buckethead, go see him play and he will change your life. If you can't, download one of his many cd's. You'll be impressed. He not just a metal guitarist with a bucket on his head. He's a weird guy but is the only person I've seen who could take the spotlight off of Les Claypool. To the Particle fans, peace. and to the haters, go see some music. You'de be surprised whats out there.

Second of all, most of these negative comments are coming from stupid kids that don't know anything about the music, the music industry, or what it takes to work hard in a band, and put music out there. These negative comments are so stupid...but hey its nothing new to be seeing up on jambase, so I'm really not too surprised. The comments aren't going to hurt the band, because those who have open minds, and enjoy music aren't the ones writing those stupid negative comments. People writing shit about the band who don't know anything just make themselves look stupid because your all so wrong. Those close to the band have a better idea and we love to laugh at you.

Chill out people....as someone said...its freakin' rock n roll man....the music will keep on rollin' MANY BANDS go through MANY changes for MANY reasons. Particle's line-up changes are no different than any other bands - like New Monsoon for instance. This is just how this rolls...

And Hood, don't worry about the thumbs downs, i'm sure i'll get a few too from any particle haters....who cares, it doesn't mean a thing. You said what you had to say and you make some great points. We all know those making the negative comments are mostly younger kids or stupid drugged out wookies who are in the scene for the drugs, not the music and wouldn't know good music if it came up and bit em in the ass. :)

Sad news for sure. I'm sad for the band and their fans even if I am not that into their music and think they've really made some curiously bad decisions in the last couple of years.

Sad story man. Particle used to be up there in my book. I felt Metzger didn't even put in time to the band and the reigns were thrown on Combe too quickly. The sound and direction deffinetely changed after Charlie left, not necessisarily for the better... The lyrics were cheesy and the jams didn't quite peak when they should have or could have.

Particle deffinetely needs to get their act together before they lose their fan base and the group completely folds.

Good luck to them, and I hope the chemistry is found, and quick.

PS, keep your eyes out for Lotus! They are bringing the HEAT!!

If you're saying the guys in particle are assholes, you're sadly mistaken. Particle is a great band that loves their fans. They take time after each show to talk to people, get their opinions on the setlist, take pictures, whatever. It sucks that another guitarist left, but who are any of us to say why that is? No one posting on this page is in the band, just remember that. Also, rejunkulous, I saw that 3 night P&F run as well. Amazing all around. Enough said.

Just from the tone of this letter, it seems that Ben wasn't able or allowed to contribute creatively to the music in a satisfactory way. I'm of the opinion that the particle identity crisis of the last few years hasn't been as enjoyable as the good ol' space porn funk days, but that while that sound was fun for the fans, it may not have been as creatively fulfilling for the band. I can definitely see how it can be hard for a new guitarist to step in and try to mesh with a band that that's already established, both in reputation and sound. Ultimately, I think the group has to adapt and compromise in order to accommodate the new player's style, and the "new guy" has to understand that he/she's coming into a new creative environment. It's a lot harder than having a big show with a dvd and saying, hey we're a new band now, sort of. From what the letter says, it seems like ben couldn't make his voice heard in the creative process of the band, or the band was unwilling to listen to what he had to say. Given the number of guitarists they've been through in the past few years, I'd say this is something they'll have to work out if they want to stay together. Perhaps they were expecting someone who would tour with them, but act like a session musician stay isolated from the creative process.

I am a huge fan of Particle’s music. I caught my first show back in 2003 and have been hooked ever since. Being a keyboard player, Steve Molitz will always be Particle to me. What he does on those boards is just amazing. That being said, Particle was never the same to me after Charlie left. From the very little I know, I felt that Charlie got a raw deal when he got axed but I kept an open mind and have continued listening to as many shows as I can download. It was kind of neat with the two guitars and I felt while Ben was never Charlie, he brought a good energy to the band. I don’t care for most of the stuff with lyrics but I understand why they wanted to explore that direction. Ben has every right to leave the band on his terms and I wish him the best of luck. However, he didn’t make Particle and his departure will not break them. They were huge on the scene before he joined and it was the time with Charlie that set the stage for their success. I so wish they could work things out with him but I think we have a better chance of Pink Floyd reuniting with Roger Waters for a worldwide tour. I wouldn’t object to them taking some time to explore their sound as a trio for a while using special guest musicians here and there. Particle ain’t going nowhere people so get your ticket ready as their about to take us on another mind trip.

I was a bigtime Particle Peep from 01 right about to when scott left. I had the opportunity to make the bands myspace page. The official and the particle people myspace. I noticed that the one thing that stood out the most is that this band has some great die hard fans who help promote such as i did. The bands promo manager is Eric Koral and he's a great help for particle. Im sure most of you remember when you could meet the band after the shows. Steve was always busy was the ladies, DRon would be selling stuff, and Eric and Charlie were just glad to meet anybody and sign tickets. Its sad to see this band change from there roots. I completely stopped making an effort to go to the shows when the band started to try and sing. Nothing agains Ben, but Particle was not the right band for songs like Cheap Novelty Hats. Best of luck to him and any other guitarists who have had the opportunity to tour with this band

Particle will find a guitarist that's the right fit. Prick or not, Steve is a bad motherfucker. A couple of the most groovin shows I've EVER seen have been Particle shows. I really liked Ben as a guitarist, but the vocals were very, very weak. The "Ben" vocal songs were my least favorites. I know nothing, but I'd bet the "creative differences" we're talking about is whether to keep playing songs like Cheap Novelty Hats and do Nirvana covers. Ben seems like a good dude and I wish him the best of luck in his next project. I've seen every incarnation of Particle except the first one and they always seem to bounce back.

This is nowhere near as big of a setback as when they and Charlie split.
