I HEARD TREY MIGHT SIT IN...

On the eve of the launch of the newest version of JamBase - a suped up version of your ol' time favorite - a call was made that changed the course of an evening. The short but oh-so-sweet phone call from my most favorite roommate, simply put: "Trey just walked into the 4th Street Tavern."

On most Sunday nights, the 4th Street, which holds at absolute 100 people at most, hosts some combination of eclectic jam session. Tonight the house band was Alan Hertz & Friends. Alan, a 4th Street legend, has been bringing this band of friends together for good ol funky music for three months now, to rave reviews. The band consisted of Alan on skins, Ed Ivey on bass, Tal Morris on guitar, another guitarist and a few horn players.

On this night, two members of the audience hopped on stage to join in the session. The first guest was Trey Anastasio and the second was Les Claypool. Trey sat in for the first tune and just warmed up to that tiny room in no time. Gently tossing in some signature moves on the guitar ("The Name is Slick"), Trey fit right in playing funky rhythm, while Les Claypool got into the jam and started throwing down some bad-ass bass lines. Les brings an entirely new and exciting element to every stage he sits on every time and Trey looked more than content rocking along!

Trey was invited up once more and there was a yelp or two from the audience for "Cissy Strut!" They all started humming the melody, and Alan said, "Cissy strut has to get started with an Aaahhhhhhhhhhhh" and we all joined in, and they busted into the funk standard. Les Claypool thumping the lines and two horn players (tuba and trumpet) playing such a familiar tune, every one of the 50 people that gathered had a huge smile on their face as they got down.

So there you have it. This Sunday night, during those post-Simpsons hours, a time usually devoted to work, with a new version of our database having one foot already out the door, we leave deployment in mid-upload and sprint out of the house and haul it ten minutes to San Rafael to Go See Live Music. Worth every effort!

Oh, and Trey, if you are checking the site today like you promised, you're still welcome to come by and get a tour of our office!
