Thank YOU... Radiohead. I have already ordered my Discbox and I have been smiling since I found out the news last night. Radiohead is the ONLY band that can possibly be said in the same sentence as the Beatles. Let's hope that this is not their last studio album. Lets all feat on October 10 and enjoy the new album. It will, without a doubt, be the best album of 2007... sorry everyone else... do not release your album the same year as Radiohead. Music fans rejoice.... the GODS are BACK!!!!!!!!!

Radiohead as good as the Beatles? Come on now...lets not kid ourselves. They are a great band but I wouldn't go that far. I think you've bit a victim of the hype machine doblejota. They have a lot of good songs but then again, they have a lot of boring-ass whiny bullshit as well. Radiohead could urinite in their fans ears and the fans would love it.

"Radiohead is the ONLY band that can possibly be said in the same sentence as the Beatles".....Really? How so? I'm pretty sure that I'm not going to agree with that. Has anyone heard any of this album? I dig their earlier stuff (ok computer, the bends, pablo honey, etc.) but can't seem to get into most recent releases, so I am interested to see/hear where this stacks up in the pantheon of Radiohead albums. I do like the fact that they are making this available for download via their own website but they should offer a flac download option as well. mp3's sound like garbage.

This article doesn't even mention the most intriguing part of this release: fans get to name their own purchase price. If you don't like it, don't pay for it. If you sort of like it, pay $3. Really like it? $20.

Say what you want about Radiohead as artists (I personally love them), but this is a pretty interesting business model. I'm going to pre-order mine for $15, just based on the principle of the idea.

I'm sure this album will be one of the best of the year, musically, but it also has a chance to really change how things are done in the music industry.

from Bob Lefsetx blog:

I got a call from the AP just last week. Asking me what Radiohead would do. I said they'd use the English indie model. License the record to a major for a limited period of time for a ton of bread. You see majors OWN physical distribution. And that's where the lion's share of recorded music revenue still is, in CDs, at Best Buy/Wal-Mart and the other brick and mortars left. The majors can get the product in the store and you can get paid. They need the billing. You still can't do it alone, even though it's been thirty plus years since the Dead failed with "Wake Of The Flood". Hell, PEARL JAM made a deal with a major.

But what if they're not? What if RADIOHEAD is giving the major labels the middle finger? What if they're saying WE'RE RICH ENOUGH! That the Net allows you to go straight to your audience. FUCK the middleman who says he's so necessary.

R.E.M. went for the cash They could have gone indie. Turns out re-signing with Warner was a good move, for they never sold tonnage again, despite getting PAID for selling tonnage. Springsteen went for the check. As did Neil Young.

But none of the foregoing acts are in their prime. They're riding off into the sunset. They don't have a hold on the younger generation. Boomers in Bimmers are the fans of these acts, none of whom can sell big numbers anyway. They're all on victory lap tours, raking in the dough for retirement. Radiohead doesn't have their dough...shouldn't they be going for the CHECK?

Isn't that the majors' advantage, they've got the money, they can write the CHECK?

Who leaves money on the table. Certainly not the agents. They don't want StubHub to steal a single dollar from their bottom line. Fuck image and credibility, THAT'S MY MONEY! I'm gonna make a deal with Cadillac. I'm gonna whore my product out on TV. Radio won't play my music, I can't get it on the Top Forty, MY HANDS ARE TIED!

It's not like Radiohead's living in a different world. But they're playing by a different rule book. One that says the money flows from the music, that people have to believe in you, that you've got to treat them right.

Shit, you can barely get a ticket to a Radiohead show. The venues aren't big and the demand is incredible. They're doing it all wrong, don't they see?

Well, obviously they don't.

This is big news. This says the major labels are fucked. Untrustworthy with a worthless business model. Radiohead doesn't seem to care if the music is free. Not that they believe it will be. Because believers will give you ALL THEIR MONEY!

This is the industry's worst nightmare. Superstar band, THE superstar band, forging ahead by its own wits. Proving that others can too. And they will.

This is what happens when you sell twenty dollar CDs with one good track and sue your customers for trading P2P. This is what happens when you believe you're ENTITLED to your business. This is what happens when music is a second-class citizen only interested in the bottom line.

There's no testimonial to Jimmy Iovine on inrainbows.com. No thanks to Rick Rubin, never mind Lyor Cohen. Radiohead doesn't need those stinkin' badges. They're THINKING FOR THEMSELVES!

What did that button say back in the sixties? "Question Authority"? That's what Radiohead is doing here. They're not holding back, saying their hands are tied, but are forging into the future.

You can't make a TV show by yourself. Certainly not a movie. Not that anyone can see. But you can make a record all by your lonesome, it doesn't cost that much. And you can say exactly what you want, you don't need to clean it up for Wal-Mart. And, you can distribute it yourself online. That's what Radiohead is doing.

Will they make a deal with a major for physical distribution? Will they do it themselves? Or will they leave ALL that money on the table? Shit, that would blow MY mind.

I've heard most every song on this album; they played the new ones live during their '06 tour. IMO - its their best work since OkC and may be even better because its a great deal "easier" listening (ie, more accessible) than all of their previous work.

PS. 'Nude' is a song that was written in OkC era and is just now being released.

I have to disagree with ya HoodooVoodoo. Radiohead has changed so much each album from pablo honey on. Not that disagreement is a bad thing. Just my thoughts.

Also, I wouldn't say that radiohead is the ONLY band comparable to the beatles. There are so many talented musicians in the world that a statement like that is just...ignorant. Unless you are talking strictly with mainstream musicans, and even so, hard to say. I dont even know if I would say that they were comparable. I don't see "Radiohead Mania" going down in history books, but that's probably a good thing. ha! Radiohead is right on top of my favorite bands list as well as the beatles.

Jonathanleeder – Great post. This is the end of the majors. Once the biggies bail, they have no cash cow. It is time that someone grew a pair and did this. Bands like Radiohead can control everything with their music from recording, distribution, ticket sales etc…

As for the Beatles bit, Radiohead are in the same zip code, but not on the same block. Then again, no one is. Shit – the Beatles released Help, Rubber Soul, Revolver, Sgnt Peppers, Magical Mystery, White Album, Yellow Submarine, Abbey Road and Let it Be all within a 5 year period!!!! No one in modern pop music has done so much quality work in such a short time.

Hoodoo – Formula? Please show me in terms of chord structure/progression, keys etc… where Radiohead repeat themselves on and on. I am interested in this, but from a factual way described in terms of music theory, not just an anecdotal ramble. If you can put together a comparison/contrast, I am sure that all of us will be very interested. Can’t wait for you to back yourself up - that is, if you got the shops. I'm pullin' fo you, babe!

bigweenr2007 – I concur. That is my big gripe about so many bands. They hit a sound and stick with it. Others just get lazy and loose that creative spark.

hmmmm....... Beatles, also, Grateful Dead and, furthermore, Talking Heads. Looking further into the issue, one could say Radiohead, or perchance, being of a funk disposition, The Meters. It's important to note that Beatles, Radiohead, and Pearl Jam or, in extreme cases of subjectivity, even Cindy Lauper, can all share the same sentence together.

"THE BEST BAND EVER! NO DOUBT ABOUT IT! I MEAN, WHO'S BETTER, I MEAN, C'MON!"

that stuff just cracks me up...

I'm not going to go on beating a dead horse, but Radiohead's contributions to music, especially electronic music, are as big the Beatles contribution to pop music. Both are innovators. And bravo to Yorke and company for actually standing on their own morals and pushing forward for us all.

It's so funny that anyone posting here that doesn't think that Radiohead is the greatest band on earth gets their post flamed (e.g. myself, Milesgone,Makisupa McGee(hilarious idea by the way)) I even said that I think they are a great band and I still got my post flamed! Why is everyone so musically fascist on here? Also... why am I getting knocked for paying the minimum amount for the album? If that makes me a bad person, why would the band give their fans that option? I could just steal it like most people do. I haven't heard even one of the songs on the album yet. I've taken my chances on previous albums and been pretty disappointed (If given the option, I'd pay about 75 cents for Amnesiac - and I think that is pretty generous). Why should I take that chance again? I'm sure I need the $14 additional more than Thom Yorke and Company do. I'm sure you elistist Radiohead fans are going to flame me again, so go ahead. I enjoy debate.

Kirkbrew - Never claimed to be able to describe in terms of music theory the similarities and differences of every radiohead song. I was merely voicing my opinion on how the songs sound to me. Your request for me to objectify something subjective would be a dauting and probably impossible task. If that's your thing, by all means go for it. Sounds like a good idea for a Masters Thesis in Music Appreciation. My specialty is biology..specifically zoology (like Suzy Greenberg). I only took one music theory class many years ago and my knowledge of key signatures and such has gotten a bit rusty.

Inkjazz - When you consider the fact that there is no shipping cost, no cut for the record company, no cost to manufacture an actual physical disk, and all of the other little factors that account for the high price of records these days, then it makes you look like "that guy" if you pay $10 or $15 for it. yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!

i dont know what else to say, this is excellent, after having expected these gems to be released in 2008 sometime. i know what i'll be listening to quite exclusively for the next real long time. and i agree on the beatles comparison. i mean someone said they have whiny shit but who doesnt? radiohead is constantly expanding and trying new ideas, as the beatles were, and they write damn good songs. i cant really say that about many other rock bands. phish lost their touch as years progressed, moe. always sounds pretty much the same, and most other bands as mainstream as radiohead just do what they're told and write music thats more appealing to radio stations and such. radiohead started off as a poppier kind of act and then said screw it, were doing our own thing. this album is sure to hit home, and pretty much everyone i know is pumped. this week will go by very slowly due to my anticipation for this album. (also anticipation for subtle, charlie hunter, phil, project object, and joshua redman shows). i hope to see you all when they tour!

Great album! Just like every other album they have put out the tracks grow on you more and more with every listen. They've done it again. Cant wait to hear those 8 extra tracks!
