DAN ZANES COLLABORATES WITH FORMERLY HOMELESS YOUNGSTER
ON GIVE US YOUR POOR
MULTI-ARTIST BENEFIT CD DEVOTED TO FIGHTING HOMELESSNESS
Two years in the making, Give US Your Poor brings together established musicians, socially committed actors and currently or previously homeless musicians in a collection of recordings that address the ongoing crisis of homelessness in America. The release features exclusive new songs by legendary American musicians Pete Seeger and Bruce Springsteen, Jon Bon Jovi, Madeleine Peyroux, Sonya Kitchell, Bonnie Raitt, Natalie Merchant, Michelle Shocked, Keb' Mo' and others.
One of the most moving testaments on Give US Your Poor comes from the youngest participant, Kyla Middleton, a talented 11-year-old who had recently been homeless with her family for more than a year. Kyla teamed up with GRAMMY-winning kids' rocker Dan Zanes, the former lead singer for the alt-rock band The Del Fuegos, to record Leadbelly's powerful "Boll Weevil" together, featuring the bittersweet chorus "We're looking for a home, we're looking for a home." The recording took place at Dan's home studio in Brooklyn, NY. By the time co-producer John McGah arrived at the studio, "Dan and Kyla were already singing together, locked into the perfect tempo and mood. Hearing those two voices, an adult, a child, two new friends, sounded beautiful and really moved me."
The CD benefits the Give US Your Poor Campaign to End Homelessness at UMass Boston's McCormack Graduate School of Policy Studies.
