On the heels of wrapping a 16-date solo tour of the U.K. and Europe, Grayson Capps will on October 23 release a limited edition acoustic album entitled Songbones via HYENA records. Word of this recording has been circulating among Capps' fans for years. Its genesis stretches back to 2002--three years before he'd release his debut album If You Knew My Mind. The stripped-down session features Capps on vocals, acoustic guitar and harmonica and his longtime friend Tom Marron on fiddle. It was recorded at New Orleans' 9th Street Pickin Parlor, a favorite studio for local Crescent City musicians before being shuttered in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.
For this session, Capps let the tape roll, cutting the entire album in less than five hours with no overdubs. Included are original renditions of songs like "Washboard Lisa," "I Can't Hear You," "Slidell" and "Mermaid" that have since become staples in his repertoire and were treated to full band arrangements on his two subsequent studio albums (the aforementioned If You Knew My Mind and its predecessor Wail & Ride). Also featured are rarities that have never been officially released like "Junior & The Old African Queen," "Guitar" and "Psychic Channel Blues." The pristine recording captures Capps' songwriting, voice and guitar in all of its unadorned glory.
Only 5000 copies of Songbones are being made available, while Capps' fans await the next official studio album, which he's begun recording with his band The Stumpknockers in Nashville, TN and is rumored to be a two-CD set due in Spring 2008.
The track list for Songbones is:
