LOTUS TOURS IN SUPPORT OF LIVE ALBUM
ESCAPING SARGASSO SEA

Lotus
For those waiting for a concert experience with the dynamics of a rock band (read: no laptops), the dance inducing rhythms of club music, and the sophistication of modern electronica, an unlikely musical alternative has arrived in the form of the band Lotus. Formed at a Mennonite college that had banned on-campus dancing as late as the 1980's, Lotus brings their club-worthy beats and rocking instrumental anthems to theaters throughout the country this fall. No glow-stick bracelets, pretentious Can trivia, or expensive distressed fashion required.

Lotus's new release, Escaping Sargasso Sea (May 2007), is a double-disc live album that draws from two previous studio albums, Nomad and The Strength of Weak Ties, along with never before released material. From the post/math-rock of "When H Binds to O" to the slippery dance beats of "Wax," this collection shows Lotus's ability to deconstruct, stretch, and rebuild their compositions spontaneously on stage. Restraining from flaunting their individual chops, Lotus builds compositions on catchy melodies and heavy grooves.

The five-piece band has creatively fused electronic dance music with instrumental post-rock for eight years. The result is an explosive live show that has made crowds get down across the U.S., Canada, and Japan. Armed with a massive light rig and one of the most energetic shows on the circuit, Lotus proves why they have become a go-to act for late night festival slots. This tour takes the band into renowned theatres nationwide including the Ogden Theatre in Denver, the Great American Music Hall in San Francisco, Park West in Chicago, and the Bowery Ballroom in New York.

Later this year, look for a Lotus remix project with LCD Soundsystem label-mate Juan Maclean.

The last time Lotus was in the Albany Area they played at The Red Square. I had seen them before so I knew it would be very intense and wicked tight. That night they played the craziest set I've ever heard from them. They were going in and out of songs, back into others, sandwiching all over the place. The first set was seemless insanity for about 80 minutes. Appearently Chuck (guitar) had written up the crazy set list and the rest of the guys were a little surprised to see the ambitious challege before the show. They absolutely rocked it! The sad part is no one was there to record it. That night I knew this band was excelling far beyond my hopes. Everyone who was there that night was blown away! Those guys are also very modest and grateful of their fans. I can't wait to see them again in September. Go see them if you have not already.

I saw that too about the laptops, Ivcheese. But I don't think their trying to be better than STS9. I think they are just saying they are different in that they don't play their instuments over the (sometimes) full song length samples they lay down. I've been comparing and contrasting the two bands ever since I knew about them. It's been interesting to watch them both go through different phases and influences. For example, STS9 seems to be going through a massive Hip-Hop influenced phase layered with crazy funk guitar. Very different from Lotus.

I agree with glassman. No band wants to keep getting compared to another. It was the same thing with Phish and the Dead, Biscuits and Phish, etc.

Right now STS9 is doing instrumental hip-hop, and Lotus has a more dance/rock/jam vibe. Both unique, both fun, just different

Also that Albany setlist had me salivating. Too bad it wan't taped:

12-07-06 Red Square, Albany, NY (THU)
1: Livingston Storm, It's All Clear To Me Now 1> Sunrain 2> Flower Sermon> Sid 3> It's All Clear To Me Now 4> Spiritualize
2: Comptroller, Kesey Seed, Blue Giant, Plant Your Root> It's All Clear To Me Now 5> Sunrain 6, Hammerstrike
E: Cirrus, Tip Of The Tongue
1 beginning part, 2 drum 'n bass style, 3 with full band Enter Sandman (Metallica) instead of abstract section, 4 middle section and drum 'n bass jam, 5 ending and funk jam, 6 ending and jam

I agree with both of you. I just don't think you can compare the two, even though they are mentioning laptops in their article. I love lotus though don't get me wrong.

who the fuck wrote this? This can't really be a lotus press release. Sound Tribe Sector 5 is making fun of sts9? Sound tribe is the only band these guys thanked on their very first album, they clearly got their style from tribe, and now they're dissin' 'em? I love lotus, I really do, but the snide tongue-in-cheek comments have me a little confused.

"Appearently Chuck (guitar) had written up the crazy set list and the rest of the guys were a little surprised to see the ambitious challege before the show."

The guitarist name is Mike. Chuck is the percusianist.

I think Lotus has changed their sound a lot since i first saw them in '03. And even though i know everyone in the band, im not sure that i like where exactly their sound has goin. Still luv them but i think they use to be more jazzy and smooth and now their going for the harder sound, still electronic but a little harder. I def recommend checkin them out. Peac3

Alot of people don't in anyway understand the way bands like sts9 use laptops. They use them as instruments, they don't have them networked together, rather they use them all independently creating and manipulating live sounds. That shit is really difficult to perfect in a live enviornment.

That said, Lotus is the heat.

Escaping Sargasso Sea is one killer double live album. If you haven't seen this band, even if electronica-type jam music isn't your thing, check them out. Really talented group of fellas( who can actually play their instruments). Peace

this is a thread for lotus. Needless energy is spent comparing them to any other band. MUSIC>> it is what it is.

This album from Lotus is the most freaking off the hook bad ass album of the year. Best I have heard!!!!

I think the only reason that the author made the comment about laptops is because there are fans/musicians out there that look at using new technology as a cop out. Unless you've ever tried to use that stuff you'll never realize how difficult it is to seemlessly intergrate it into your sound like STS9 does.

It's kind of like when Bob Moog introduced the synthesiser back in the 60's. It wasn't immediately embraced by musicians because they looked at it as making "artificial sounds" and they didn't even consider it an instrument.

Thay being said I've been more impressed seeing Lotus than I have Tribe. The music they make is very different and both of them deserve all the credit they get in today's scene.

No laptops? Who gives a shit as long as we're all having a good time?

Ya'all need to settle down and enjoy yourselves instead of bitching. Wait until life starts throwin' curves at ya' and you'll start appreciating what you've got. My wife and my brother got cancer in the last year; btw both were in their 30s. Now I realize that every moment in life is truly meant to be enjoyed. As a matter of fact, enjoy the fuck out of it and quit your bitching! Laptops or no lap- tops this scene has become out of control. As with all anarchy, you have to take the good with the bad. I remember the day when it was all about lovin' your sisters and brothers. Those days are gone. Remember when wookies only came out to vend their wares to the kind people of the magic venue? Now they're talking about wookie on wookie crime and beatings? WTF? Remember peace and love?
I digress.

When the storm flies and the wind blows, flow on at a steady pace. I know I'm taking a little liberty with the lyrics, no pun intended.

Oh and by the way, who doesn't use a laptop?

difficult shmifficult...laptops belong in the studio, not on the stage! i go to shows to see musicians play instruments, not tappity tap tap looking at computer screens. even if it is difficult to incorporate into a live show and i will acknowledge that the comparison to moogs was valid, laptops kill energy!

Lotus has been improving dramatically since I first saw them in 03...they definitely bring the dance party. Can't wait till I get my chance again in Chicago. Too bad they get compared to STS9 as much as they do. I see two completely different bands going in different directions, but with similar talents.

I like raw bass, and lately the 9 have been dropping just that. Keep thinking programing and playing PA sets are easy, especially with 5 other peeps dropping with you. Laptops hardly kill energy...I love it, and I know the masses dig it as well. To each it's own, just don't downgrade talent.

Lotus and Sound Tribe will continue to make heads all over this world smile...
