The 5th Annual Jerry (Garcia) Day summer will help mark the 40th anniversary of the Summer of Love, and reunite former band member Melvin Seals with the fans that have kept Jerry Garcia's memory and music alive.
Sunday, August 5 at the venue named in his honor, the Jerry Garcia Amphitheater in John McLaren Park, fans will be treated to more authentic nostalgia than usual with performances by Melvin Seals, who played with the Jerry Garcia Band for 15 years. Of meeting Seals, Garcia said, "He was just playing the tastiest little stuff. I thought, 'this guy is just too much!' I asked him what his name was. He said, 'Melvin Seals'." Mr. Seals, featured on Sunday with the JGB Band, is a San Francisco native who grew up and still resides in the Bayview, where he plays in local churches when not touring.
Having played with legends such as Chuck Berry, Charlie Daniels and Elvin Bishop, Melvin Seals' powerful and high-spirited Hammond B-3 organ and keyboards have been heard in the music industry for more than 30 years. While in the Jerry Garcia Band, he added his gospel-soul touches to the Band's foundation of rhythm and blues. Also Joining Melvin Seals and JGB will be former Jerry Garcia Band drummer, David Kemper. Rounding out the bill for the rest of Sunday's concert will be Workingman's Ed and Jelly.
Presented by the Excelsior Cultural Group and San Francisco Parks Trust, this event also aims to raise awareness for Jerry Garcia's childhood neighborhood, the Excelsior District. What began five years ago as a fundraiser and celebration for Crocker Amazon Park continues to highlight the City's extraordinary public spaces that belong to all of us. Positioned on the border of the Excelsior and Bayview Districts, the park venue, concert, and residency of its artists help bring together the broad spectrum of fans that enjoy this special outdoor event.
The Jerry Day 2007 Concert on Sunday, August 5 is the culmination of a week of revelry, including interviews on KFOG's Morning Show with artists (August 1, 7:30 a.m.), a birthday celebration at San Francisco's Hard Rock Cafe (August 1, 8:00 p.m.), a "Best of the Bay" Award Celebration from the SF Bay Guardian (August 3, 5:00 p.m.), and a Jerry Day Community Pre-Party (August 3, 6:00 p.m.) at Pete's Bar (Harrington and Mission), located just around the corner from Jerry Garcia's childhood home.
