Fender Honors Mascis

J Mascis Jazzmaster

To honor the sonic legacy of alt/indie rock founding father J Mascis, Fender is supremely psyched to unveil the sparkling-new J Mascis Jazzmaster® guitar.

Mascis took the instrument to a new place with his feedback-drenched, distortion-laden band, Dinosaur Jr. This new signature model pays affectionately ear-splitting homage to Mascis, giving the instrument a modern makeover for fans who've been clamoring for such a model for years.

With its stunning and unusual Purple Sparkle polyester finish, matching headcap and gold anodized pickguard, the guitar features mods requested by Mascis himself—including an Adjusto-Matic™ bridge, reinforced tremolo arm housing and a satin-finished neck. The Dinosaur roar comes from dual vintage reissue pickups and the barrage of controls the Jazzmaster has always been known for—a three-position toggle switch with volume and tone knobs and, for this model, a two-position slide switch with volume and tone controls configured as a "lead tone circuit" (up) and a "rhythm tone circuit" (down).

Available beginning in July 2007, the J Mascis Jazzmaster is literally a sparkling new addition to the Fender lineup, in celebration of the adventurous and continuing sonic contributions of the man who has been the model's constant champion for nearly 25 years now.

In other Dino news, the band has announced another string of dates that finds them headlining gigs with Dr. Dog and Band of Horses in September. Dinosaur Jr. tour dates available HERE.

Let me start out by saying that J Mascis and Dino jr. were my idols from age 13 to 16 when I first started playing guitar, and grunge was still the latest fad. I still have all their albums from before they broke up circa Xmas '98.

I think it's great that Fender has honored J Mascis. I thought he had faded into the past forever, nearly a decade ago. I'm glad he's still around.

...but not at a fest or JBase. Okay, now you can tell me that I need to broaden my horizons and give me the thumbs down.

This is crazy I was just reading about his version of "Maggot Brains" he did with Watts(?) and Bernie... now to see he is getting a guitar after him. Maybe I need to check out some Dinosaur Jr. a little more thorough.

i suggest you start with the album "where you been". the whole thing is gold. "Start Choppin" is a song i heard on the radio that started it all for me.

i think it is grunge and indie is a misnomer for this band.

"reinforced tremolo arm housing". That cracks me up! If you read the Guitar Magazine sheet music back in the day, all of his songs include 2 1/2 step bends on notes in the solo. For those that don't know, that basically means "try to break the whammy bar of when you play this note!"

Too funny-Kellerheads foot goes as far up his ass as it could possibly go on a public forum. Ha,Ha,Ha! Or maybe not, we will have to see. Hating on J Mascis on the previous thread and then Wham!! he gets vindicated by Fender Guitars! Then as I type my comment to shit talk, up goes Kellerhead! I'm rolling!!!

Karecter, pick up the new album it is great. It is the original line up with Barlow in it. Great album, as close to the original Dino Jr as it has been in 10 years.

I was into Dino back in the day and lost touch. I have Green Mind and just downloaded a bunch of stuff to check out again.

As for the ax, not sure about those switches. My brother had a Hangstrom and those things always got dirty. Also, playing live they are tough to get to. Nels Cline should get his own Jag.

And why do you folks pick a fight with Keller? The first post could have been funny, but didn't quite do it. Don't jump his ass because he can't make the close on a joke. Maybe he could have named a band that actually used a Jazzmaster? Or a band that is more of a punch line in themselves - like Ugly Kid Joe or Smashmouth? Humor is tough and not everyone can do it...especially in print. We should help him with his joke writing and not just call him a douche.

So Keller – Do you want to give the joke another go around???

The version is on Mike Watt's album, Ball Hog or Tugboat. The album is ALL Watt with a ton of guests including, Mascias, Flea, Vedder and a whole lot more.
You would benefit greatly from learning about and listening to ALL THINGS MIKE WATT, son!

WTF is a custie? The origins of name are from the 03 phish run at deercreek. I was walkin down shakedown w/ my homies and some nar nar slob chick was asking if anyone had any cuttyfives...My friend had a nasty ingroin hair folicle on his ass and was slinging his anti-inflamatory pills on shakedown, no false advertising mind you...Great memories...Does anyone remeber the naked chicks running around during birds of feather in the daylight? Or EN2 tearing it up until 6am in pouring rain in the lot...Or Gordon riding around eating corn dogs? Shit was great..

What's with the J. Mascis / DIno, Jr. comeback tour? It seems like they're getting more press now than they got in the 90's.

Custie is a word I always thought was kinda mean and trashy...didnt use it 'till lately. Way back I associated it with bad new parking lot slang... anyhoo, I always understood it to mean 'customer' ~ kind of rude ~ slang to discribe the armies of clean cut 'party jocks' who were suddenly swarming the phish scene. i guess id say that the word was most popular around the time Phis started palying GD venues like Deer Creek. your typical custie might be dressed in a name brand shirt with a small red horse on it and a white bassball hat that says "st. johns prep". they might already have thier wallet in hand (stuffed by parents) as they ask to buy anything the lot kids have to sell...the custie ~ the easy customer. the rube. the gringo. i didnt like the word for a long time because it is kind of lieke tour kids biting the hand that feeds them...saying 'we are cool and you are not'.

so...is a wookie a contemporary GROG?

tour kids are so cool...how jealous I am...no showers, no $$, lots of fast food, and complete loss of self respect begging for miracle tickets...I guess i was a custie back in the day...eager to get a few doses and some rolls...i wasnt a jock, nor did i sport a white hat...Just a core burner & drinker, lookin to grill up some dogs at 4am on any given lot while pullin some JB...even though the effects of alchohol were negated by the doses...good times...
